Manual is the key word. AF points doesn't do the focusing anymore. BUT, the spot metering still works on the active AF point. So consider this when doing a manual focus.

Press the right top most button sa likod ng 400D, then use the nav buttons to select the AF guide point you want to use... (kaso diamond layout yung 9 AF points ng 400D, so pick the nearest one to the lower left area na lang)

Or, use the center spot, center the object that was in your lower left area before, turn the lens to MF, then re center back to the original center position, then shoot.

Don't really know what's better though.  (probably would work best only with a huge DOF coposition)

yes, they work, it just doesn't do the focusing for you.  :) the green light still lights up when the selected focus point is in focus. (at least for my cam)

How to take a shot when I want to focus in the lower left area of the frame but can't do it in auto focus

you can do it this way:

-focus the nearest focus point on the flower
-lock focus
-re compose to desired position
-shoot.

Have you tried focus-recompose bro? or maybe you're inside the closest focusing distance of your lens kaya you cannot auto-focus.

He couldn't be inside the minimum, coz he could do it manually...  but you're probably right that the AF failed...could be a number of reasons...like being too dark for the lens...etc.

Note also that only the center AF point is the only cross type AF point. It could be that the AF point in use can't find the contrast to satisfy its orientation. I.e. A horizontaly oriented AF point can only focus on subjects with lots of vertical lines. Same is true with an AF point which is vertically oriented.

Also note that the corners of your lens are the least sharp - especially when wide open.
