Are the images still not sharp even if you use a tripod? I find it hard to believe for a lens such as the 24-70mm not being sharp.  Granted there is a possibility of sample variation. But if it was me, I would probably get the 24mm or 35mm f1.4.

bring it to Canon and have it calibrated then decide if its really a bad copy or not.. make sure you include your camera body for calibration

Can you try posting an example photo using a tripod?

i dont have anymore a flickr account sir. if you want , i can email you the pictures, just pm your email address.

Just to give you an idea how did i test it...

Im comparing my shots from a 50mm 1.8 canon.

I have attached a flash as well so that i can go Manual instead of aperture priority.

settings on the camera is:

My focus: "gitna ng mata nung stuff toy"

Keema- you know your equipment more than we do.  If you feel that you need to shift to a prime lens, then, go for it.  Just try which focal length works best by setting it at 24mm, 35mm, and 70mm to see if 85mm will work for you or not. Good luck.

a 24 1.4L and a 85 1.2L
kasi may 50 ka na kaya OK to na suggestion if you can afford the 85 1.2L.  You don't even need to get 2 primes to cover the 24-70. A wide angle + 50mm OK na. A 20mm or a 24 is fine with me. You know your habit kaya you can answer that actually.Tell us your thoughts and style, maybe we can be very sensible. I am not familiar with Canon's 24-70 but Nikon's is not the sharpest among the trinity but the most lovable despite having a "bitin" focal lengths. Alangan sa 24 kulang sa 70. I can't get rid of my 24-70 before so I just added a prime. The problem is I went to my prime often than my 24-70 , because I am a hobbyist and don't cover events. However, when party comes, graduation, weddings(backup photogs for friends and relatives) etc., the 24-70 is very useful. It is so hard to let go the 24-70....just my thoughts and I am different from the rest of the gang here.

I had the same dilemma, I just calibrated it to my camera my self, using AF micro adjustment.

Pero what I liked about the 24-70 is the color. Ganda ng color nya eh. I had 50mm 1.8, 35mm f2 and also tried 85 1.8. Pero mas maganda pa rin ang color ng 24-70. I haven't tried the L primes. Siguro mas ok yun.

OT - about the calibration - if after this hindi pa rin sharp, out of focus, etc - maybe may fault na yung lens. People usually think pag Canon lens automatically pasok agad sa bodies. Not the case. Same with 3rd party lenses. May lens na perfect sa isang body, pag na fit sa ibang body kahit same model parang iba na yung performance. :)

by wow do you mean yung parang nag pop out yung image? sakin kasi ganun :) napapa wow ako pag sharp/contast/colors pasok na pasok sa mata ko :p

i agree sir. the color rendition of the 24-70 is really good. i noticed it when i have the 24-70 mounted when doing group shot eh mejo bitin but i still took some shots. i used the kit lens to cover the group and output is really way far in terms of color of the 24-70

I agree with keema, the canons 24-70 is not as impresively sharp was what we think, compared to 70-200 any f version or the 24-105 , based on experience I add an extra sharpening workflow on a 24-70 compared to the 24-105

Hi Keema.

Before i'm using 2 lens combo which is 28 f1.8 usm and 85 f1.8 usm.
also tried a couple of L zoom lens such as (24-70L,24-105,70-200s)
the sharpest lens i tried is the 135L (hands down)  :D
and that 70-200 f2.8 IS II is the sharpest zoom i tried.
that two is really comparable in terms of sharpness set @ 2.8

prime is a sharp lens, i think there is something about the lens construction of a primes that help sharpness become sharp  ;D

though comparing your 24-70L on a nifty fifty
sharpness should not be afar from a cheap lens.
L has speacial glass that nifty fifty doesn't have.

just try to calibrate/clean up your 24-70
it might just need some tune up.
Talent is highly Overrated.
Anyone can learn to be good at pretty much anything as long she/he has the time & tenacity to practise doing it

OT - Maybe there's a back/forward focusing issue. Try to shoot using manual focus and a tripod, focus at the center then if you manage to get a sharp output, ipa-calibrate mo na. Pag hindi pa rin sya sharp, malamang soft copy talaga yung nakuha mong lens.

i would go for 2 primes and recommend the following primes, 24 1.4, 35 1.4, 50 1.4, or 85 1.8. focal lengths would differ naman on the way and what you usually shoot. you will not only improve sharpness, since ako din based on experience is nabibitin sa sharpness ng 24-70 but also a lighter setup, pag tumatagal kasi nakakatamad na din magbuhat ng mabigat na set-up. in my opinion, mas simple, mas maganda. ;)

Pa calibrate nyo nalang muna sir, i agree with them na yun yung best thing...

If switch ka sa prime at FF... i would go for 35mm L and a 135mm L

just me...
