Windows Photo Gallery now supports raw format
« on: July 28, 2011, 06:42:32 AM »
There is a new codec for windows 7 / Vista users in order to view various RAW formats. I was a little disappointed that it didn't support the Nikon's D5100 and D7000 NEF file. It's free to download anyway. Try it here.

The Microsoft Camera Codec Pack provides support for the following device formats:

Canon: EOS 1000D (EOS Kiss F in Japan and the EOS Rebel XS in North America), EOS 10D, EOS 1D Mk2, EOS 1D Mk3, EOS 1D Mk4, EOS 1D Mk2 N, EOS 1Ds Mk2, EOS 1Ds Mk3, EOS 20D, EOS 300D (the Kiss Digital in Japan and the Digital Rebel in North America) , EOS 30D, EOS 350D (the Canon EOS Kiss Digital N in Japan and EOS Digital Rebel XT in North America), EOS 400D (the Kiss Digital X in Japan and the Digital Rebel XTi in North America), EOS 40D, EOS 450D (EOS Kiss X2 in Japan and the EOS Rebel XSi in North America), EOS 500D (EOS Kiss X3 in Japan and the EOS Rebel T1i in North America), EOS 550D (EOS Kiss X4 in Japan, and as the EOS Rebel T2i in North America), EOS 50D, EOS 5D, EOS 5D Mk2, EOS 7D, EOS D30, EOS D60, G2, G3, G5, G6, G9, G10, G11, Pro1, S90

Finally!

Just download the Microsoft Camera Codec Pack for Windows 7 and Windows Vista to be able to view raw photo files from more than 120 DSLR cameras in Photo Gallery, as well as in Windows Explorer.

I can't install.  I get this error.

"could not write value progid to key."
I edited the registry to have permission but still gets the same error.

Seems like quite a few users encounters this problem while installing.

Mine works just fine.  Did you get the 64-bit or the 32-bit version?

i don't really find windoes photo gallery that useful once i had gotten LR3. it hogs as much resources as LR3 from my laptop as well. plus, whenever you have to add/remove photos from your files, you have to do it through LR3 anyway, or else the catalog gets screwed up!

when i didn't have LR3, my RAW files are in use with ViewNX. so i still had no need for windows photo gallery. (if you are working in RAW anyway, would you not rather use the software that came with your camera?)

sorry. not ranting. just thinking out loud.
cheers!

It is quite dated!! No d3100,d5100 and d7000 support. Then  August is coming with the new Nikon cams release, Microsoft will have a lot of catching up to do!!! :D

Again, this is just an option to those photographers who do not have any software that can read their RAW files.  Most of us here have different software that can read RAW files. I was hoping that it could read the D7000 NEF file but it doesn't work when I tried it.  No problem in installing the 64 bit codec.  Most computers are fast nowadays and shouldn't have problem in multi-tasking unless your RAM is less than 4GB. I have PS5 and NX2 but the older version. I didn't want to spend more money for the latest firmware from Nikon.

Try re-downloading the file.

Bad trip lang, it doesn't read my D7000 NEFs, just my D5000's....

Dennis. I feel the same way so I downloaded the Nikon View NX2 which is also free. You can do some minor editing with your D7000 NEF files. It works with either Mac or Windows.  Click here.

Thanks for the link, Glenn.  I already have the View NX2.  I guess I just have to live with it for the moment.  :D
