Had the same question you have right now. I was also trying to justify the price of the D7000 against the D90. I had to go for the D7000 instead since it has more focus points, better metering and better body construction.

As for choosing between the D5100 & D90, I'd personally go for the D90 simply because of its built-in motor. Keep in mind that buying a camera body without a motor will save you money in the beginning since you'd probably just stick to the kit lens until you grow out of it. When buying lenses, those without built-in motors come out cheaper. In order to use these lenses, you need a camera body with a motor.

As for DSLR video, they're really more of a gimmick. You're buying a DSLR to shoot photos, not videos. There's a reason why they made video cameras. DSLR video is not really that well developed yet, in my opinion. If you still really want video on a DSLR though and if you think you'll be shooting video more than snapshots, I'd recommend you also consider Canon. The 60D is very capable at shooting video.

Hope this helps and good luck with your choice!  :)

Thanks again for the opinions and replies! A friend suggested that I get this kind of purchase instead: D90 + lens kits + speedlight + prime lens (e.g. 35mm)...its price is almost the same (if not a bit higher) than that of the D7000 kit. Is this a better route?

;) D90 ok na yaan sir as you've stated you're new into photography, and you're not naman into video shooting,,  D90 is already a capable camera, you'll benefit D90's brighter optical viewfinder, built-in-motor, better ergonomics, CLS,  etc etc
you'll just have to know the basics of it...
,,,
BUT you also have to consider...
 estimate lang:
- D90 w/ 18-105 kit = 45,000
- Speedlight (Nikon Sb600) = 16,000  or (Nikon Sb400 = 7-8K)
- 35mm f/1.8 = 14,000  or (Nikon AF 50mm 1.8D = 5-6K)
   Total  75,000

... yung D7000 w/18-105 is around64,200, D7000 body only is around 53,000 ...
again take a closer look sa D5100, IMHO it's the baby D7000 ;D and since the lens kit at 35mm will autofocus sa D5100 and it pays to do more research/reading di rin biro ang DSLR and you're investing on a system (Nikon or Canon) not just on the camera itself... i'm sure others have more greater insight ;) thanks...

You have a huge point :) Thanks! As for the D5100, I am not really looking into it since I have a big hands and my wife also likes "big" cameras :)

Go with whichever you think is a better value for you. If you're just starting out naman, the D90 would suffice. Although the D7000 is more advanced in terms of tech, think first if you'll actually use all of its functions. If budget is not an issue, go with the D7000. If it is, go with the D90 + kit lens + speedlight + prime lens (35mm is a good choice, 50mm is too long indoors and too short outdoors).

By the way, here are the prices at the time I purchased my items. It might help you out.

D7000 Body - P53k
SB600 - P10.5k
50mm 1.8 - P5.3k
18-200 - P28k
Nikon D7100 | AF-S NIKKOR 18-200mm 1:3.5-5.6G ED VR II | AF Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 D | AF Nikkor 20mm f/2.8 D | SB-600 | Nissin Di622 | Black Rapid RS-7
