Experiencing morning, midday and night coffee and snacks on a seaside verandah in Pagudpud, we were really looking for a hotel where we can have a similar experience, it was a long shot, Pagudpud being a beach and Bacolod a city but we were willing to settle for any kind of verandah. This was one thing missing from our favorite hotel in Bacolod.

Unable to find such hotel, we went back to the Business Inn and asked the staff if they have such rooms (well, we really know they have none, but we asked anyways), and lo and behold they have such, well sort of.

The inn had an atrium filled with palm trees surrounded by rooms and it turned out that we can move the chairs and table from the room as makeshift verandah furniture. There really were not that many activities on the hallways especially on the upper floors so privacy was really not an issue.

In the evenings it was coffee (instant 3-in1’s we bought outside and asked for hot water from the staff) and chips (and chicharons) while talking about the day’s adventure; in the mornings, breakfast from the hotel while planning for the day ahead.

The Business Inn seemed to have everything we were looking for. Hopefully on our next visit, they’d have a rooftop swimming pool too (now that’s wishful thinking, but who knows haha).

As customary for Filipinos, we never leave a place before buying something for our relatives back home and we went right at it after breakfast.

There are quite a few souvenir houses in Bacolod, but since we decided on just bringing home foodstuff out list was shortened to three; Bongbong’s Merci’s and Virgie’s. We went with the latter, having tasted their Napoleones before, we actually really did not have a hard time choosing where to get our pasalubongs.

The store is named after its owner, Virgie Chua, who has been baking goodies for 37 years now. Her hobby had now turned into one of the biggest selling brands in Negros.

The store has a never-ending variety of bakes sweets; from tarts, cookies, breads, bars, puff pastries, sweets, cakes, to other local delicacies. Her bestsellers include the Mango and Caramel Tarts, Galletas, Butterscotches, Meringues and of course, our favorite Napoleones.

Never fond of sweets, I surprisingly found their Caramel Tarts to be really really good, a friend went so far as to say that it was the best tart he’d ever tasted in his whole life. Popularly called as the Boat Tart due to its shape, its delicate crust is filled with creamy caramel and topped with meringue icing. Most tarts are quite hard to chew due to the crust, but not Virgie’s.

Shirts, magnets and and non-food whatnots are also available in the store for those looking for some Bacolod-themed souvenirs.

After an hour of shopping, our pasalubongs filled two medium-sized boxes, quite modest really compared to the other visitors in their store. Now were’ ready to head back to Manila.
