Mayantoc - Summer Capital of Tarlac
« on: March 23, 2011, 11:23:57 AM »
Considered to be the "Summer Capital of Tarlac", its a beautiful place with valleys and hills, pristine rivers, and hospitable folks.

I had the chance to visit it recently during its town fiesta (thanks to Mon Corpuz). The sumptuous Ilocano food was a feast for the tummy, and town's vistas a feast for the eyes.

Mayantoc is one of the most rustic and beautiful towns I've ever been to.

Mayantoc Rural Sunset by allanbarredo, on Flickr

We had great weather that afternoon, both eastern and western sky was ablaze with colors. It was also the time when the moon was closest to earth. We were anticipating a spectacular moonrise but the low-lying clouds blocked the moon. The moon peeked for just a couple of seconds, but didn't have time take a shot. Without the clouds we would have a great moonrise, but we might not get these colors. Can't have it all ;)

The Wooden Bucket by allanbarredo, on Flickr

That night after our 3rd dinner, Zer (the one and only from BPP) and I went to the "perya" (fair/circus) while Mon was taking his power nap (which turned into a power sleep).

Judging from the queue, this is the cash cow of the perya. The show is just a couple of minutes and the entrance fee is 25 pesos per person. There was no shortage of people wanting to see a stunt-person ride his motorcycle on a vertical wall, round what resembles a giant wooden bucket. Fine demonstration of physics.

We were shooting this on the back of a truck, probably used to carry the perya equipment. There was a couple of people sleeping a few feet from where we were standing. One child kept tossing and turning on her sleep, shaking our platform. Oh btw, there was also a dog nearby, good thing it didn't bite.

The Daredevil's Ride by allanbarredo, on Flickr

Sometimes a DSLR is like a Press ID, it allows entrance to places where the public is usually restricted. Pair it with a tripod (or a huge kickass flash if you have one with you) for best results ;D

Ruweda with Perigee Moon by allanbarredo, on Flickr

The ferris wheel or "ruweda" is ever present in any perya. Its one of the crowd favorites too.  I wasn't able to shoot the perigee moon at moonrise due to cloud cover but I chanced upon it right on top of this ferris wheel that night :)

LOL! Now I regret dozing sleep and not joining you. Magkakatay pa tayo ng kambing the next day e :D

Thanks Allan and Zer for finding time to visit our sleepy town. It has been my dream to bring fellow lensman to town perhaps for my desire to see my playground from another person's perspective.

As promised you are always welcome. Let's go back and climb the mountains next time. Welcome and thank you for visiting.

If there is one thing that Mayantoc has in abundance its several kilometers of pristine river (Camiling River I think) and its tributaries snaking around/through the town. According to Mon that's why the town is referred to as the Summer Capital of Tarlac. This is where everyone goes to cool off during the hot summer days

Great images sirs! If I may ask, how far is this from Tarlac City? My fiance is from there so I often make trips to Tarlac.
