Sigma 17-50 f2.8 os hsm
« on: August 09, 2010, 08:50:45 PM »
Good day mga ka phipho. hobbyist here.
Im currently eyeing for sigma 17-50 f2.8 with os to replace my kit lens.
May nakasubok na ba nito. How was it? Iv read about it has fld glass which is claim to perform like fluorite of L lenses.
How does it compare to tammy vc and canon is 2.8s?

tamron (vc and non vc) both have better IQ than sigma but aren't exponentially greater. I believe the tammy has a better price point. Sigma however does have a service center, JTphoto which offers free calibration I think. for tammy You'll have to make sure first it focuses properly before purchasing it as you'll have to pay for calibration.

anyways, since they are 3rd party lenses, even when bought brand new you'll want to check for focusing problems such as back or front focusing. line up 3 batteries diagonally
(45degree angle, 2 inches from each other) and use spot focusing to focus in the middle battery. shoot wide open at a distance of about 1 meter and the middle battery should be the one in focus.

Will consider sir
Im just curious about how it actually performs.
reviews said the IQ is equal or even surpasses the canon and even nikon equivalents.

I seriously doubt it outperforms the canon 17-55. it's one of the greatest crop lenses in the market.

also, i've compared it to the tammy and the sigma (nikon though) and it's AF and IQ are unmatched

I'd like to retort my previous statement, I was thinking of the previous Sigma 18-50 in this post. the newer Sigma 17-50 OS HSM a big improvement and higher performing lens compared to the sigma 18-50 and tammy 17-50 vc or non-vc according to MTF charts and some sample images I've seeb. The HSM motor, like the Micro USM (cheaper USM of canon) allows for fast focusing but the lack of FTM kinda makes it a sub lens IMO. still if it's like their 24-70's HSM then it will provide pretty fast focusing and sigma has done wonders with their OS system comparable to canon's IS system.

so if you don't need FTM or the canon oem lens then this should be a pretty dandy lens.

oh btw it seems to have a 72mm filter thread. I prefer the 17-55 for it's 77mm filter (shares filter size w/ 10-22, and my would be 70-200 IS) and ftm

so Sir, IQ wise at par naman sya compare to oem, that is if i find a good copy
. And btw sir ,based on the specs it has 77 filter.
and the price if im not mistaken is 32k sa jt (pricier by 5-7k than tammy)

ot: im also eyeing on the sigma's 8-16. Not a fast lens but a novelty lens. Another potential crowd favorite.

filter size noted, I saw the lens bundled with a 72mm filter so I assumed as much.

based on reviews and the sigma lenses (noteably the 50mm f/1.4) they have very good IQ, comparable to the OEM lens 17-55. for that price difference (I'm guessing from the tammy VC version), I think I'd give the edge to the sigma. it's a newer lens plus lens calibration from JT is a big plus to justify it's premium. why don't you try it out before buying.

i'm thinking of the opposite achee.. i have a tamron 17-50 non vc, but itching to get the nikkor.

about the topic, tamron has a good optics.. same as sigma. but i just don't like the build quality of the sigmas, especially the rubber peeling.

It’s worth reminding here that the best „primes”, tested on the 50D, reach the level about 52 lpmm and results near 34-35 lpmm we consider to be the decency level. The performance of the tested Sigma makes us clap our hands and cheer.

i expected this..i'm a happy user of 17-70 OS which also has high MTF values..

and the MTF results this constant 17-50 2.8..man..

at 50mm 2.8 it's way better than Nikon 17-55 wide open..(based on MTF values)

I've seen some samples shots of this lens from other forum, and I'm really amazed. The bokeh is superb and the sharpness is something to look forward to. Though I can't take anymore the itch to replace my Tammy, but maybe on 13th month pay nalang since I just upgraded my another hobby..

Anyway, if its performance will come close to what the Canon 17-55 can do (my hopes are high because of what they talk about their FLD), this will be my next lens. I still prefer JT's customer service than Canon..

Muhkang eto na next gas ko ;D

same here sir!  ;D :D ;D :D
got a sigma 70-200 apo dg hsm II and would want to build up my trinity lens:

sigma 10-24
sigma  17-50 2.8 os hsm
sigma  70-200 hsm II

ok na po ba na line up ito?
masyadong mahal para sakin ang OEM's since personal use lang naman..

to all: does this has the rubber finish that chips away or yung bagong shiny plastic na po? if it's the latter then it's all good!!
TIA

I checked out this lens sa isang store kanina.  I believe andun pa din yung rubber thingee build ng sigma batch ng lens na ito.

Also, medyo inalog ko yung lens (very slight lang) and parang naririnig ko yung OS component nya.  Owners of this lens kindly verify parang lata yung naririnig ko dun sa umaalog.  I even asked the lady there kung bakit ganun and pati sya nagulat.  Sabi naman ng isang guy na kasama nya yun daw yung OS component.
