New D90 with date and language already preset.....
« on: July 21, 2010, 02:31:42 AM »
Hello all,

I just purchased a grey D90 from Hidalgo; the unit was delivered to me at my address.
I charged the battery, attached three lenses to check if camera operated properly....and all three worked fine. ( No FEEE error, thank God )

I then took one shot, and jpeg #1 corresponded with a shutter count of 2, ( opanda EXIF reader ), which I thought was acceptable, but unusual, as I did not use live view ( Live view will increase the shutter count ).

What was really strange is that the date of the supposedly new unit had already been preset.
Normally, when a new D90  is turned on first time, the camera will ask you to set the date and timezone; this did not occur.  ???
Language had also been pre set, but the timezone was different. ???

Is this normal in a supposedly brand new unit ?

Should I even be concerned at all ? :-\

Non issue yan if date has been set... baka na pre test / pre set lang before they sent you the unit to make sure everything is working fine...

Ok na yan... shutter count = 2.... Super bago pa yan... don be too OC with your gear... meron naman 1 year shop warranty...

San mo binili?  kay Meyer's/Henry's/Watson's?

Just enjoy your new dslr!!!

Sa akin nung binili ko yung camera ko, pag bigay sa akin ng cam for testing, lumabas shutter count 3 na (kasi tinest nila for two shots bago inabot sa akin, and nakita ko naman na ginawa nila ito).  Hahaha!

Nakaka-increase ng shutter count ang pag gamit sa live view?  Paano yun?

Many many thanks for the advice and the much needed wisdom guys !!

I must apologize for writing in English as my command of Tagalog is very poor. :'(

Being very much a newbie, ignorant, and suffering from "new camera obsessive compulsive neurosis" ( a new category of psychiatric disorder  :-\...)  I needed to ask for expert advice first from all of you guys before I make any conclusions. Therefore I hesitate to reveal the dealer, as I do not want to unfairly or inadvertently malign the shop in any way.

Gosh .....Indeed they must have tested the unit to make sure it was ok.....I didn't think of that ! :o

I guess to operate the camera to see if it would work, they had to set the date first  before anything else....It would not have been possible to test the shutter before setting the date  :)

Hi Chip, ..... About the D90 Live View and shutter "actuations" ......

From another forum I found:
When ...."using the LivePreview mode on the camera ( a D300 )  it takes 2 mirror up and down to take a picture, and  this is counted as well "

Indeed, I tested this, by operating the live view while taking a shot on the D90; this resulted in at least TWO jumps in the shutter count. After opening live view, and taking a few more shots, all the jpegs taken with live view had a 2 or 3 incremental jump in shutter count.

the discussion on the forum concluded that :
" 'clicks' really means mirror actuations and the metadata field needs to be updated accordingly. Opanda calls it "total number of shutter releases by camera" while CS3 ( Adobe photoshop ) calls it 'ImageNumber'  "

Maraming salamat po sa inyong lahat  !! :) :) :)

Many thanks for the kind words and encouragement guys !  :)

Indeed, I became hesitant about using the Live view when I found out about increasing shutter count.  :o ???
But there are apparently other more compelling reasons why we should be using the excellent view finder on the D90 instead of the live view.

Here are some quotes ( verbatim ) concerning Live view from the wonderful Magic Lantern DVD on the D90:

" Live view is not recommended for routine handheld shooting as it makes the camera too awkward to aim and hold steady...."
"The D90 is not a point and shoot, but a DSLR with an extremely high quality optical viewfinder, so we should use the viewfinder"
"Another disadvantage of using live view, besides making the camera hard to handle, is that Autofocus is also not as fast and accurate, and that delay as the camera tries to focus, will really slow you down in some shooting situations and could result in missed shots".....
" Even the D90 manual warns that there are about a dozen situations where autofocus simply will not work very well in Live View. Although you can change the focusing mode for live view by going to the d90 menu number a-7 and choosing a different mode, it doesn't help....Instead, leave this setting on wide area, and hope for the best "

Indeed, as I start using my D90, I am finding out that the D90 viewfinder is superior to the live view in most shooting situations...

My warm regards to you all,  and happy shooting  !

Ed ;)

the reason why i always buy from mang ramon is he always seem to give me perfectly new items  :o :o :o

sabi nga nya "we dont sell defective cameras" sa calling card nya noon sabi sa akin some years ago. obviously, may pinatatamaan syang isa pang seller na may track record na sa pagbenta ng mataas na shutter count ::) ::)
