IMHO, it's not easy to check for defects as there are jsut so many things that can go wrong with dslr bodies. make sure that all the buttons are working and the LCD screen is not damaged with dead pixels or scracthes.

try to shoot single shots and continuous shooting. and check for the immediate response of the shutter button as well.

anything else inside the camera you can no longer check and honestly you need to trust the person that is selling to you.

In addition, try checking if the Sensor has any spots or damage by shooting a pure white background. If it shows a lot of spots, then it would prove that it is very dirty which would also mean it wasn't taken care of well. Also it would be good to check the pop up flash. That is overlooked sometimes and there are times where the bulb is blown. A very costly repair. :)

aside from those mentioned already, try to check also the actuation count of the unit. it's like the mileage km reading of a car for camera bodies.. :-)

My comment may not really help you but I would suggest buying a brand new body, and just getting second hand lenses :) maybe it's just me, but i find it very difficult to buy 2nd hand bodies without being paranoid about em.

it's best if you have a buddy who knows at least the DSLR basics to check the unit with you. Also, try to purchase from sellers with good reputation na.

Cross-check the serial numbers from the stolen Items thread. :)

you should also check if the mirror still sits properly dun sa foam.

what you need to do:
-activate the mirror lock up
-remove the lens or cover to check the mirror position when locked
-if it sits tightly on the foam on top, you'd be fine. if not, the shutter mechanism is near its end :)
