Keep the 40D.
I started with 400D and then upgraded to 50D.   After a few months,  7D was released.  Ahh....should have waited for awhile.   anyways,  been enjoing my 50D...no regrets.

same sentiments. I stayed with my 40d. Did not bite the 50d upgrade. Happy now with the 7d.

NO! you might regret it. I suggest that you don't look at models below XXD so you won't be tempted. for marketing reasons, you will definitely find some interesting functions on new realeases but bottomline line is the overall package of the equipment  ;D

If you can afford a 2nd body, I think the 550D is a good camera to have in your arsenal. I've seen reviews and sample shots, and it really is impressive. They are dubbing it as a "baby 7D", which says a lot for an xxxD body primarily intended for entry-level.

The controls and the faster response time however is what I find I like about the 40D, and one that I can't live without, so if you can't afford two bodies, just stick with the 40D.

built-wise
----
- 500D / 550D - good
- 40D / 50D - better
- 7D - best

most of the pips have spoken - stick with the xxD or go up to the xD.

on brands, if you already have a few lenses from your 40D, then stick with the same brand.

on the brands, Canon or Nikon only.  Pentax or Olympus are nice but have very low resale value in case you want to dispose of them as there's is no or very little Pentax or Olympus users here.

since you've already decided.....ano nga ba plano mo?   ???

 ;D ;D ;D

stick with 40d. i wouldn't even think of upgrading it to 50d. but, if you're going to upgrade big time, then go for 7d or the 5dmk2. :) A piece of advice though, what suits your needs best, you have to think of it prior.
