40D for 550D? I think I'll say no (but ultimately depends on your needs).

I gave up my 40D for 7D though. :D

The xxD class camera's main strength are:

 - 5-6.3fps
 - short shutter lag time
 - short black out time
 - dial at the back
 - joystick button
 - other easier controls and customization (e.g kelvin temp).

These are the things that make the xxD class very fast compared to the xxxD class. The ability to change settings easily too is it's main difference. It's not the pixel count or IQ.    .

From a 40d to the 550d, there are  2 things that the 550d gives you:

  - 10 vs 18mp (a big thing if you do macro or landscape)
  - video (with complete control on settings) with mic in.

Maybe on equal terms higher ISO performance with the same if not better noise control for the 550d.

If these 2 or 3 things don't cut out for you, then the 40d is still the camera to keep. The xxD class is more tuned to events shooting. The xxxD class for general all around photography. Please see my article on the Upgrade Strategies for Intermediate User w/c the Mods seem to have made into a sticky.

  Your options are:

   - replace your 40d with the 550d
   - add the 550d to your 40d
   - replace your 40d with the 60d when it comes out
   - do nothing and continue using the 40d

There is no best solution, or right solution. A lot of factors rests on your preference w/c is affected largely by your budget and actual needs.

Unless you really need the video for work I suggest sticking with the 40D because like what caterpillar said in his thread  A Guide for upgrading cameras for the Intermediate user video is still at its early stages and it is better to wait.

If you want to shoot videos ... I think it would be better if you opted for a video cam :)

second body puwede pa.  but you will be hardpressed to adjust to the different xxxD settings and button layout plus the lack of the dial.
