This is a good question for beginners.  I was once faced with the same question before.  My suggestion is to master your DSLR first, if you know the basics of ISO, aperture & shutter speed, use the WB and different metering modes, then you can consider upgrading your body; till then invest in lenses.

again, it depends on your needs.
- if you need a lens for long reach get the 70-200

- if you need a faster FPS, better controls and handling, better ISO output, CF card compatible camera, more rugged body....then get the 50D.

Let the good times roll.

ang body pwedeng itapon, ang lens hindi mo matatapon

i think what jpunieves meant was that the value of the body depreciates quickly while the value of lenses last, and that it is better to invest more in lenses than in the body

^ in addition, when you buy the 70-200, you get shots in this focal range.. and you can use it if you plan to upgrade your body in the future.. pero if you go for the body, you're stuck with shots from 18-55mm range lang..

IMHO, an upgrade from 1000d to a "brandnew" 50d is not really a wise decision at present.. better wait for a newer xxd or go for the 500d or 550d na lang.. IMHO lang.. :) HTH!

salamat po sa mga replies  ;D

iniisip ko din, if i get the 50d. kukuha nalang ako ng 55-250 IS. or should i keep the 1000d and buy the 70-200 f4L instead?

mahirap na question yan... been there before, ended up getting a 24-105 then after a week nag upgrade na ako to 50D from 1000D.

lahat ng reply sa thread are correct. it's better to invest on the lens but mabibitin ka sa functionalities pag maganda na lens mo. this is based on experience and not sure if the same case for others. if you can do both at the same time, do it. for sure you'll be happy. if you have to choose, i suggest that you go for the lens first :)

tgnan mo kung kelangan mo ng medyo wide (24-105 L) or boso lens agad (70-200)

wag ka magalala sa body, mabibili mo rin ang xxD model in a year after your purchase of the lens.

pero kung makati na sa kamay, buy a 550d at 24-105L na lang. tapos flashbang...

I'd go for the lens upgrade. I don't think you will get a big upgrade lift to 50D. You will be surprised that sometimes its in the lens and in the body that contributes to the IQ.

the body will always upgrade and have new features. the lenses although may have a Mark 2 are relatively the same, invest on lenses first.

plus, the 50d is due for a refresh, just wait for that one

i'll share my experience. my very first dslr was a d60 which i got last january. sobrang nakakatuwa sya coming from a point and shoot. but i was awestruck when i was able to handle a d90. at ISO 3200, the d90 handled it well! so that after a few weeks i bought my brandnew d90 :D  although my decision was partial since i already have an all-in-one 18-200 lens so i didn't really need a new lens.

but who knows, if i was able to handle a sweet lens, baka sa lens din ako bumagsak.

so my upgrade got me the following: good performance at high ISO, HD video, bigger body (hoping i wouldn't need to buy a batt grip) 'coz the d60 is soooo small and light, and a bunch of other features i haven't explored yet. for me, the additional cash is all worth it. my question to you now is, what will a body upgrade get you, and will it be worth more than getting your telephoto lens?

how long have you had the body? just about everyone I've talked to has said that it's better to invest in lenses than bodies so unless you really need something a newer body has, better to get a new lens.

i think you need to ask yourself first why you want to upgrade to a newer body. are your needs not being met by your 1000d? if yes, then go ahead and get a new body. nothing is more exciting than holding a new unit and trying to figure out the manual  ;D

i would suggest though to hold on for a while. new units with video specs are coming out. mamaya yun naman gusto mo  ;D like in my case, im planning to sell my gears to get a unit with video. i guess you have to decide what your needs are first para hindi ka magsisi.

If it were a toss up (considering what you want to do), think better to get the lens... in the long run.

Buy the lens and add an external flash. ;)

FYI: to jpunieves, 18-55 is also a (wide) zoom lens, what you're looking for is a TELEPHOTO zoom lens. :)
