I’m planning to buy a 2nd lens (2nd hand) for my  canon eos 1100D and I have this gear for quite some time now. What will be a good lens if I’m going to use it for lets say a kid’s program at school and I don’t want to go in front of the crowd to take the pictures mas prefer ko yung dun lang ako sa likod.

If you prefer long-range shooting, the question becomes: how far are you shooting from? Is the venue a small classroom? Or a large auditorium?

Without knowing the specifics of your shooting venue, I can only provide general answers below:

Quote
- Will the 200mm or 300mm be enough?

On an APS-C camera such as your 1100D and my 650D, 200mm is more than enough to reach the front of a small or medium-sized classroom that's about 15-30 feet (5-10m) in length. If you're shooting from the stands of a gymnasium or from the audience of an auditorium, then 200mm may be enough to get wide shots of the stage, otherwise you'll need a lens that reaches up to at least 250mm if you want to get closer shots.

Quote
- What specs should I look for?
- Does it have to be a canon brand or there are other budget friendly brands?
- How much usually is the average  2nd hand price of the lens I mentioned.

For an 1100D, the first thing that comes to mind would be Canon's own EF-S 55-250 lenses. The most current generation is the EF-S 55-250 IS STM, but the older EF-S 55-250 IS II has been in production longer, so there should be more of this model on the second-hand market. A quick check of OLX shows one first-generation (EF-S 55-250 IS I) priced at 5.5K, so I'd expect a used second-generation to be somewhere between 6.5K to 8.5K.

For third party, I've only tried a co-worker's Sigma 70-300mm. I can't recall right now if it's specifically for APS-C, but it should more than cover the range I presume you're shooting from. However, I can't say I was satisfied with the image quality of the Sigma I got to use, in comparison to the 18-135 STM I am used to (to be fair, the Canon is a newer lens).

Lastly, both Sigma and Tamron also sell superzoom (18-200) type lenses, but I wouldn't recommend any of them over the already mentioned lenses for your purposes, as superzooms are designed for convenience (i.e. no lens switching) over image quality.

To conclude, my suggestion would be a second-hand Canon EF-S 55-250 IS II, but if you can afford it, go for the newer IS STM model.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for that prompt and detailed advice sir @Radon. Meron na akong base line ;D

I dont specifically prioritize long range shooting. Its just that sometimes when I go on some events, occasions and outings I wish I had a more powerful lens. But one thing I like shooting far from the subject(my kids) is that I can take pictures of them w/out them being overly conscious that there is a camera pointed at them.

I just joined an FB group for camera buy and sell. I'll start hunting for those 2 lenses that you've suggested.

thanks again.

I have a d60 camera and I'm planning to upgrade it to a newer model. Thinking of getting a d90 (if I could find one) and buy/add a new lens. I currently have the 18-55 mm, 50 mm 1.8 and the 55-200 mm. I love using the 55-200 mm lens I bought second hand in Hidalgo since it takes really sharp pictures. The kit lens is actually good too but I am thinking of replacing it with the 18-105 mm for a longer range. Bugbog ang kit lens sa akin. The 50 mm I rarely use cause of the manual focusing issue with the d60.

Now I saw the D7000 and D7100.  And I've been thinking of getting a good walk around lens. Tama ba to get the 85 mm lens as a walk around lens? And should I just get the d7000 or d7100 instead of the d90?

-D7100
- stay with the 18-55. It has way better min. close focus distance for semi macro effect than 18-105. That 18-55 is a good walk around lens.
-85 will be too long for walking around. Pero siyempre puwede naman mahihirapan ka nga lang kunan ang friend mo with a nice view behind.
-many will prefer a 17-50 f2.8 as a general purpose lens than a variable f3.5-5.6

Lenses nowadays kasi wala nang focus meter eh.. so that is the workaround I do when I want to focus to infinity... Happy shooting! ;-)

Or just focus on something that is very far which has a high contrast and set your aperture to a narrow one like f11-22.

Night shooting @  f 11 and above.

I still haven't decided on what camera to get  :(

I went to Camerahaus in Megamall to inquire about the d7000 and d7100.  i am leaning towards the d7000, thinking of savings I'd be getting if I get this instead of the d7100.  then someone showed me the fuji xt1.  now super confused na ako.

I'm planning to buy po slr cameras in the new future..

Sir kung wala ka pang camera I suggest not to limit your options to DSLR .  Try also mirror less models. Imagewise pareho na rin kasi class- class or level-level. In general relatively cheaper din Mirrorless specs - specs.

Hi mga sir, newbie here. Gusto ko sana bumili ng 2nd lens ko, sigma 17-70mm 2.8-4 or tamron 17-50mm 2.8, ano kaya ang mas magandang choice. Nikon d7100 ang gamit ko at may 35mm 1.8g na lens na ako.

Hi mga sir, newbie here.
