comparing its dimensions (diameter x length, weight) with the other lenses (c/o canoneos.com):
70-200 f/2.8L ISU - 86.2mm x 197mm, 1470g
70-300 f/4-5.6L ISU - 89mm x 143mm, 1050g
100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L ISU - 92mm x 189mm, 1380g

so the 70-300 is a short fat boy, but it's the lightest of the 3.

 ;D ;D ;D

Not sure, but that may not be the lens's full length extended. We all know that the 70-200's are already fixed. But the 100-400 does extend, so that 189mm length will go further out. It is possible that the 70-300L IS will also extend out. 143mm is too short. That length could be only at 70mm. Anybody know if the lens extends?

The price is also too rich for many. Not really affordable at U$1,500. If it were U$1,100, maybe. Even at U$1,300, I'd probably just opt for a 70-200 f4L IS and a 1.4x TC. I'd get up to 280mm f5.6 with IS and still have an excellent 70-200 f4L IS that is lighter and smaller.

Just looking at the 70-300L IS, it does look like the front end would extend outwards as you zoom. I'd hope the front won't rotate though

at first i was drooling at the 70-300 but thanks to Caterpillar, i will stick to his suggestions para hindi na kailangan ng GAS-tos plus the added above mentioned advantage

As the site's name suggest, it's just a rumor. and most rumors are not true. Like the 24-70 f/2.8 IS it's been rumored to come out for couple of years now.  ;)

Some of the lenses they posted there as rumors came out recently, so I'm hoping for the 16-50  :)
