You can buy a UV filter for protection of the front elements of your lens.
Other filters like cpl,nd8,ir,close up, etc. give different effects on the picture depending on the type. But for you I recommend the UV filter. The cheapest goes for around 300 pesos.
My two cents  ;D

UV filter first and foremost.  Protect your lenses.

Cheapest filter with kit lens to further decrease not initially good image quality?
I would suggest multicoated filters, e.g. Hoya digital UV.

Hope I'm not hijacking your thread, but since this is about filters, just want a pros opinion on what filter should be used in taking photos in broad daylight? (Sun is really high and in front of you and you are on a tour with beautiful landscapes, of course the time of day isnt really great for photography)  Should I get an ND or a CPL filter?

First of all go for the uv filter. If you have some extra you can also purchase a CPL. :)

if your purpose is protection, its ok to buy a UV filter. For this matter, you dont need a multicoated one. Shooting seascapes, these filters are protective. If you shoot in studios, UV filter is virtually useless. Some Landscape photographers remove their UV's to allow multiple stacking of other filters like CPL, ND and NDG to prevent vignetting.
However, if you are concerned about Image Quality, a UV filter might degrade IQ for the most discerning eye. All UV's have a slight magenta tinge. Likewise, If your UV filter is not clean, it may degrade IQ

1) UV filter for lens protection
2) CPL for better landscape photos in bright sunny conditions
3) ND grad for slowing down shutter speed in bright conditions (i.e. misty waterfall effect)
