Which should I prioritize? Upgrade camera or upgrade glass?
« on: January 21, 2009, 05:03:40 PM »
Hi! I hope I can get advice on this.

I need to upgrade both my camera and lens but I can only afford to upgrade just one first.

I have a canon rebel xt (or 350D) and I would like to upgrade to a 50D. The lens I currently own is a 28-135mm USM IS and I'd like to upgrade to a 24-70mm 2.8 L (yes, i know the range is very different, but the quality of the lens is much better) OR the 24-104mm 4/f L. (Can't decide between the two...perhaps you can also help me decide)

I have no idea which one to prioritize. I've taken photos taken with the 24-70 mm L and the results are just AWESOME compared to that of my current lens. On the other hand, perhaps the quality of my photos will also improve with the better camera but the current lens......

So I hope someone can help me. It's a dilemma! :P

TIA! :)

Lens upgrade should go first. They will stay in your arsenal the longest.

Camera bodies upgrade almost less the year. One you get the right lens for you then the neverending camera body upgrade follows.

But in your case, I think you no longer need an upgrade ;D

Actually, looking at your photostream, you don't really need to upgrade, your shots are already great.  ;)

But I'd recommend getting the glass as well.

For me I will also prioritize the lens. Now between the two lens you mentioned, that will depends on your need. If you need longer range get the 24-105 but if you always shoot in low light such as events, the 24-70 is for you.
I have travelled thru rough and rugged road.

Go for glass, definitely.

Since you already have the 28-135, a 24-105L IS might make more sense, especially if you find you use the long end of your current lens a lot.  If you don't mind the shorter reach, or if you really need the wider aperture, the 24-70L is a fantastic lens.

Get the 24-70, at kung mas gusto mo 'yung 24-105, trade tayo.  ::)

I started with a 300D and went to a 350D, 20D and currently a 40D.  Switching bodies never changed the image quality as much as moving to L glass.   ;D

hi!

go for the lens first. you've tried it. you've seen the results... so.... what are you waiting for?  :)
try to get things right before firing the shutter. it's harder to fix things later using software. you're better off doing something else... like taking more pictures. =)

+1 for glass! consider this: 70-200 f4L with a 2x extender; it becomes 140-400mm @ f8 to complement your 28-135mm while still having the versatility for closer range without the extender...  ;D

i'm going for the tougher body (canon xxd), rather than the lens, after my first year for the ff: reasons

1. i usually shooting outside, thus my camera is exposed to different environments (beach, drizzle, etc...). i want it to be able to withstand those elements
2. i want a smaller setup.. might be contradictory, but its because of the battery grip. the 400d without the grip is too small for my hands, but with a grip, it becomes too large. with a 40d, i just the need the body, plus the good grip
3. in relation to #1, someone might argue that lens are not weather protected. i don't have an L right now, but it would be easier for me to purchase a cheap lens than a cheap weatherproof body (e.g. 50mm f1.8 vs used 40d)
4. 40d is simply tougher. it will become my long term body

its just me. everyone has his own opinion right? :)

I suggest Glass first.. their value stays longer unlike bodies that depreciate like cellphones. And most importantly, IMO the improvement it makes vs. a 'body' change is a no contest.  :)

Glass glass glass... always glass....

I think major diff is if you switch from crop to FF body.. for those high ISO shots..specially the 5D Mk2.. but still GLass for me

"in my humble opinion"  ;D glass is the better investment....  after completing the "line up" of lenses that you want or need.... camera bodies are "disposable" since they are the photography hardware you have to change or upgrade....and considering the price of dslrs now adays....they are getting cheaper every year(bought my 300d for around 65,000 pesos some years back, cost for a 10d was about 90,000 pesos). who knows your next camera body would be beter than  a 50d.  ;)
Think out of the box.

Hello master idol Karen ;D I would definitely agree with all the replies in here (lens first), and having the 24-70 and 24-105 as choices, I would go with the larger aperture of the 24-70, will definitely help for those low-light situations. You can never go wrong with an L actually, so its a matter of preference for you on what to get, taking into consideration the budget of course ;) mas lalo pang gaganda mga shots mo nyan, looking forward already ;D

OT: same dilemma for me...pero sa kin body upgrade na talaga ang priority (D40 currently)...sana kayang mapagsabay ang lens and camera upgrade...

hello master Karen, a really big fan of your works (i added you last year as a contact on Flickr to keep track of your 365 project, congrats on that one!  ;D). go for the glass, then body second.

excited to see your images once you've upgraded your arsenal. God bless!
