Sell a D300 + zoom lens, Buy D80 + 17-55 f/2.8. Sensible?
« on: January 18, 2009, 08:38:27 PM »
I've been pondering on this idea for quite a while now.

facts:
- I don't have the budget to keep the D300 plus buy a 17-55 f/2.8.
- I had a D80 before and i loved the saturation straight from cam
- Plan to just have a simple setup of one cam, one lens, one flash gun.  I've got other priorities that require my funds.

My thinking is that lenses stay and bodies come and go so why not invest in pro glass now?  I just don't know if the images of a D300 + non-pro zoom lens would be better(or not) from the same image taken from a D80 + 17-55 f/2.8.

If i could sell my D300 + a few lenses to be able to buy a D80 + 17-55 f/2.8 without adding (or at least not much) cash, is it a wise decision?

Camera body options? I'd throw in the D90 in the picture but this cam is almost as much as the D300 so its not an option for now.  The D200 maybe another option if able to get one in excellent condition with low shutter count.

Lens options? Yes, there is the Sigma and the Tamron of similar focal range and same speed as the Nikon.  However, for this thread, lets stick to the Nikon 17-55 as my preference.

I'd love to hear your opinions.

Thanks!

Hmm ... while there are some things that make having a pro lens seem appealing, if it were me there would be some things I'd miss from the D300 :

 * High ISO performance - this would be the biggest issue for me ... There are simply some cases where I need to bump up the ISO, but anything above ISO 800 is too noisy for me.
 * AF performance - the D300 doesn't only have more AF points , but it tracks moving subjects better than the D80.

Given that, I'm not sure if it's such a wise idea to downgrade your body. Well, you also get a body that's around 300g lighter, but that aside I'd choose to have the d300 and a third party lens instead anytime.

The D300 will get out dated much sooner than a good PRO lens. If you want to get the most cash out of your D300, now is the best time to sell it, since prices of DSLR bodies drop rather quickly.

As a general rule, for better image quality, upgrade your glass first.
Well, that is, if you already have a decent camera body that doesn't limit your type of photography.

I started with 3rd party, average performing lenses so I could testify that a D80 with Nikkor 17-55mm will always give better IQ(out of the camera) than a D300 with not so good lenses.

Buying a Tamron 17-50/Sigma 18-50 would be the easiest & cheapest way without sacrificing your camera body, unfortunately, you don't like this option.  Thus you could sell/swap your D300 for a D80 and go Nikkor 17-55, which you already know.

Hi Carlo,

For me, I would keep the D300 and get a Tamron or Sigma. I would maybe only sell the D300 to get a D90 but that won't make any sense. The high ISO advantage of the D300 is the dealbreaker for me here.

The D300 is far superior and for me, if the concern is a tight budget then just hold off the urge to buy the Nikkor for now.

Try borrowing a Tamron or Sigma and take it for a spin, maybe you'll like it.

HTH!

i don't know if your budget will permit, but a D90 and the 17-55 is another option.

the D80 and 17-55 2.8 combo is a pretty good combo. i'd choose this over the d300. though you'd be sacrificing your awesome body, the lens would stay with you longer and so you can just upgrade your body when you have the budget already.

I agree with this. D90's sensor is better than the two models mentioned, plus a better Dynamic range

Hi Topy,

Yes I know, I was just bringing up the idea that the 3rd party lens are a good alternative and worth "reconsidering".  :D

I went a bit off there, got carried away since I was planning to purchase a Sigma or Tamron.  ;D

Thanks and good morning.

Stick with your present setup and save up for the lenses, no hurry in buying pro-grade lenses. While tempted to buy 17-55 f/2.8, do you really need it?

also true. i gave up the 17-55, got the 16-85 and never missed it at all.

about nikon lenses, sigma and tokina are great alternatives, but that is just what they are. they are not nikon lenses. i have bought them before, but iba talaga pag nikon - the feel, the construction are much much better.

tough call..
love the feel and high iso of the d300.. but..

Id probably go with the d80 and the 17-55, because i always prefer the best glass over a better body.

Had the d80 before, its a great camera, vivid colors and sharp images out of the box,  pretty light as well.

well, i do not stop action, i use a flash when shooting indoor people shots, and use a tripod for long exposures. in other words, i do not seem to need the F2.8 that much, and when i do, i have the 50 1.8 or the 105 2.8. image quality of the 16-85 is pretty much at par with the 17-55, and it has VR!!!

Sold all my gear (D300 w/ grip, sigma 18-50 and 70-200vr also a 10.5 fishy) for different reasons but when I go back to this hobby I was planning to get a used 17-55 2.8 (a lot of people are selling them now) and 70-200vr plus maybe a 10.5 fishy but would have enough cash for a D40.

That was the plan, but after trying a FX D700 w/ a nikkor prime (85mm 1.8) I am sold w/ the idea of getting one.

Anyway, it will be your preference. Goodluck w/ sleepless nights (I haven't slept much for days!)

better glass or better sensor of  D300 vs D80, looking forward to a full frame of not.  wait ka lang, your decision now might be overtaken by events of Full Frame era.

couldn't agree more. 17-55 2.8 is a dx lens. if you got this your upgrade will limit you to dx bodies. you can wait while you are evaluating if you reallyneed thislens. this is in fact my dream lens before, but I got the 16-85 that suits my budget perfectly and puts me in my most comfortable range. in the future I'm thinking of getting the 17-35 2.8 that I can use if ever I have a chance to go fx.
