Based on what I've read so far from review sites and other threads/forums, here's what I've gathered:

For great IQ (image quality), go Tamron
For fast(and quiet) AF (auto focus), go Sigma

vs their OEM counterpart (Nikkor & Canon), they don't VR (vibration reduction [for Nikon]) or IS (image stabilization [for Canon]).

Pahabol:
Aside from the lens' build and IQ, do you guys think that its just worth it having to pay double just to get the Nikkor with its VR function?

Na-expire na time ko to edit my post above hehe --> I meant "...doesn't have VR..."

I haven't used Tamron 70-200mm F2.8, I used and tested Nikkor 80-200mm F2.8 and Sigma 70-200mm F2.8

For me I go for Sigma 70-200mmm 2.8 it for the ff reasons:
1. Sharp (good alternative for nikkor lenses)
2. it focuses faster
3. cheaper than nikkor

but even i the money for nikkor lenses and i have to choose for Nikkor 70-200 F2.8 or Sigma 70-200 F2.8, I will still go for Sigma.

Hmm, now this is something new, even with the money to splurge for the VR he'd still go for the Sigma? Usually it's just financial issue why they choose the 3rd parties, pero this one it's the other way around.  :)

I have to test a Sigma 70-200 2.8 one of this days....  ::)

yes even Nikkor have the VR.  I will still go for Sigma. I prefer Long lens without VR of Nikkor.  nasubukan ko na rin kasi ang Nikkor bro, nakihiram lang with co-workers sa studio pero mas gusto ko po ung performance ng Sigma na 70-200mm, assuming 70-200mm f2.8 compare to nikkor same specs of tele lens

Well, let's not generalize it. It'll still depend on what type of lens is being discussed, IMO. After all, we're ONLY talking about the 70-200 f2.8's here and NOT EVERY lens in their (Tammy's & Sig's) line up. ^_^
Take Tamron's 17-50 f2.8 for example, its the best alternative out there (so far) in that range as oppose to Nikkor's 17-55. Afaik, walang pantapat ang Sigma dyan as far as reviews go.

@All
So is it safe to say that the only thing that really separates the Nikkor counterpart from these 2 3rd party lens is the VR function? 'Coz if it is, then I think that the price difference is waaay too much. Personally, I'd really like to have that VR feature but I just can't believe that I have to pay for 2pcs of Sigma/Tamron just to get that on a Nikkor.  :-\  :(

hmm now that's weird  ::)

It's not just the VR bro, IQ (though it's subjective), contrast, sharpness, WB. The price on that glass has a reason. Maybe on other things, a 3rd party item is better than the OEM (Like for Cars), but when it comes to this equipment, a Nikkor for a Nikon, an L for a Canon, etc. etc. is still the best there is.

I don't find any "Professional" review stating that the Sigma beats the Nikkor when it comes to the output, whether it be local or international. I think most Nikkor users here in PiPho would agree with me. I currently own three 3rd party lenses, a 12-24mm Tokina, 17-50mm Tammy and a 50-150mm Sigma. Indeed, I would say I am fortunate that the copies that I currently have are sharp and no issues whatsoever. I have commissioned numerous paid jobs and I haven't heard any complaints with any of my clients when it comes to the output. So I can attest that indeed, 3rd party lenses can go head to head with the expensive ones.

But everytime I'll try out a Nikkor (Or Canon during my Canon days), I still find it different, images popout of the screen. I even asked some of my peers to look at the image, I'll show them the same shot and ask them which one is better and they always point to the image that was shot using the OEM lens, no editing, no PS, straight out of the cam. That is why if ONLY I HAVE the MONEY to spend for these precious glass, I'll go straight Nikkor lenses, but for now, I'm a hobbyist and a weekend paid shooter, I'll probably settle for my lenses.

To the TS, I suggest you do a test of both lens (Tamron and Sigma 70-200mm) and be the judge. Afterall, it will be your lens and at the end of the day, you're the one who will use your hard-earned money. So if you already have the money, I suggest you do it as soon as you can so that you won't miss any opportunity shooting, let the passion endulge you.  :)

Very well said sir,  ;) in the end he will be the one using it. He must test it first then evaluate it either Sigma or Tamron will be his preference in buying 3rd party lenses.

So IQ wise better ang sigma over tamron, pero how does it compare vs Canon's F4L (IS and non-IS)?

Bro, IQ is subjective... It may be good for me, but not for you. Canon's F/4L? Sigma tends to be too warm, Tamron tends to be dull.  :)

If you're gonna get that, consider the IS version :) some say that the Non-IS is sharper, but only by a bit. The IS would be worth the added price I think. I'm shifting to Canon soon, and the 70-200/4 IS would be one of my options :)

Well, if the max. aperture of f4 is OK with you, why not? Pero sayang rin yung f2.8, wouldn't you think? hehe
Also, consider what nix said about the IS version, the IS feature might come pretty handy for you esp. when shooting at the long end (bet. 100-200mm) IMHO.  :)
