Power Compact: Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX3
« on: July 22, 2008, 12:44:22 PM »

http://www.dpreview.com/news/0807/08072102panasoniclx3.asp

things of note:

- fast f2.0 24mm lens
- can shoot RAW
- flash hotshoe
- 2.5 fps
- matrix/center/spot metering

looks promising...form factor looks like a Sigma DP1. my previous experience with a Lumix (FZ7) however, left a lot to be desired on the image quality front. let's home the Venus IV engine fixed that already.

yeah, that lens has some serious specs..... F2.0 at the wide end at 24mm, and F2.8 at the long end at 60mm --> WoW!! some peeps will miss the telephoto range but the LX series has always been a wide-angle camera.

i just hope they improve on the IQ at the pixel level..  its a good sign they didn't increase the megapixels again.. i had the LX2 before, and the Pany sensor & image processing is lagging behind the G7/G9.. but the lens on the LX has always been great.

Sounds encouraging.  I have been in the market for a compact camera that shoots RAW with good high ISO performance - it looks like this may be the one!

Ming Thein made a review and patiently answers a lot of questions in this thread:
http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/readflat.asp?forum=1033&thread=29058591

Some full-size samples from another user (low to high ISO):
http://www.migsvuitton.com/blog/downloads/lx3/samples.html

The lens they put on this thing is kinda like a 16-40mm F/2-2.8 Macro VR/IS (for APS-C).

The review link above (Lawrence Ripscher) rates it's ISO performance about 2/3 to 1 stop better than the G9.... plus an additional 1-stop brighter lens.  The G9 is about a year old already so expect an upgrade from Canon next year.  The G-series used to have a bright F/2.0 lens, from G1 to G5, but they switched to an F/2.8 lens on the G7.

its supposed to be $500 usd.

Just preordered from Provantage for $421 shipped. Millennium Camera advertises it for $384 but it's bait and switch. Millennium Camera has the WORST reviews and customer service of ANY retailer: http://www.resellerratings.com/store/Millennium_Camera.
