nature reserves?
« on: June 04, 2008, 08:35:28 AM »
Hey Everyone,
Does the Philippines have any type of nature reserves for wild animals/birds?
I know there is the avion (spelling?) park in Manilla, but is there anything more natural than that?
Thanks!

Check out Calauit Wildlife Reserve in Coron, Palawan. It used to be the first, and largest wildlife sanctuary in South East Asia.

Candaba swamp is a bird wildlife reserve. It is in Pampanga, an 1 1/2 hrs drive from Manila via NLE.

Try also Olango Island in Cebu for migratory birds watching and also a place for camping.  To go there, one has to take a jeepney, or taxi or any, wag lang maglalakad at malayong lakaran yun, to a small pier just beside the Mactan Hilton (also a beauty).  Take the pump boat to olango island.  Then, a tricycle will take you to the bird sanctuary at the other side of the island ...  Happy vacation, and don't forget to taste the sweet scallops out there ... they are really very cheap out there ...

Anyone have pics from out there?
How close can I get to the bird / would 300mm be enough?

O yes, your 300mm will be more than enough ... you will have the opportunity to come very close as they have observation decks and you are hidden from the birds ... the best is to ask for the right season to go there... the DOT-Cebu can help you that.
