Playing with Dragonflies and Damselflies
« on: March 18, 2008, 04:51:09 AM »

according to WIKIPEDIA...

SCIENTIFIC CLASSIFICATION:

Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Arthropoda
Class: Insecta
Order: Odonata

Suborders:
Epiprocta (dragonflies),
including infraorder Anisoptera (true dragonflies)
Zygoptera (damselflies)

By definition....

Odonata is an order of insects, encompassing dragonflies (Anisoptera) and damselflies (Zygoptera). The word dragonfly is also sometimes used to refer to all Odonata. The term odonate has been coined to provide an English name for the group as a whole, but is not in common usage; most Odonata enthusiasts avoid ambiguity by using the term true dragonfly when referring to just the Anisoptera.

According to me....
I dont know anything about INSECTS but im trying to familiarize it one at a time... one by one.  I've been browsing my gallery and found out my dragonflies and damselflies photos are growing in number.  Whenever I shoot MACRO, i dont care what type of insect is posing in front of my camera but what i care is only to capture and photograph them.  For those who are familiar with insects particularly those under the ORDER of ODONATA, please help me name and distinguish one photo from the other or correct me if im wrong.

Let me start here by showing you the following:

the DRAGONFLY

and the DAMSELFLY

Phylum: Arthropoda
Class: Insecta
Order: Odonata
Suborder: Epiprocta
Infraorder: Anisoptera

Families:
Aeshnidae
Austropetaliidae

according to me....

This is a dragonfly... can you please identify which FAMILY does this dragonfly belong?

again... according to WIKIPEDIA

DAMSELFLY

The Damselfly (Suborder Zygoptera) is an insect in the Order Odonata. Damselflies are similar to dragonflies, but the adults can be differentiated by the fact that the wings of most damselflies are held along the body when at rest. Furthermore, the hindwing of the damselfly is essentially similar to the forewing, while the hindwing of the dragonfly broadens near the base, caudal to the connecting point at the body. Damselflies are also usually smaller, weaker fliers than dragonflies, and their eyes are separated.

SCIENTIFIC CLASSIFICATION:

Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Arthropoda
Class: Insecta
Order: Odonata
Suborder: Epiprocta
Infraorder: Zygoptera

Families:
Amphipterygidae
Calopterygidae - Demoiselles
Chlorocyphidae - Jewels
Coenagrionidae - Pond Damselflies
Dicteriadidae - Barelegs
Euphaeidae - Gossamerwings
Hemiphlebidae - Reedlings
Isosticidae - Narrow-wings
Lestidae - Spreadwings
Lestoididae
Megapodagrionidae - Flatwings
Perilestidae - Shortwings
Platycnemididae - White-legged Damselflies
Platystictidae - Forest Damselflies
Polythoridae - Bannerwings
Protoneuridae - Pinflies
Pseudostigmatidae - Forest Giants
Synlestidae - Sylphs

according to me....
Whew!!! I just learned these distinctions... Damselflies are also usually smaller, weaker fliers than dragonflies, and their eyes are separated.

Thanks for viewing...

According to Wikipedia....

Calopterygidae is a family of damselflies in the order Odonata and are commonly known as broad-winged damselflies. These rather large damselflies have wingspans of 5-8 cm. The family contains some 150 species.

SCIENTIFIC CLASSIFICATION:

Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Arthropoda
Class: Insecta
Order: Odonata
Suborder: Epiprocta
Infraorder: Zygoptera
Family: Calopterygidae

Subfamilies:
Caliphaeinae
Calopteryginae
Hetaerininae

According to me....

I'm not so sure about this one if it belong to the Family "Calopterygidae" but you may want to visit http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calopterygidae and confirm it.  Tayo ng mag-aral ng botany... este... zoology... mas malalim na pag-aaral daw ay entomology (study of insects).  Help naman dyan sa mga nasa field nito.

Here's a Damselfly that I took last year somewhere in Tanay, Rizal.

I think this one also belong to Damselfly family "Calopterygidae" , a black-wing damselfly (Calopteryx maculata).  This one also was taken in Tanay, Rizal.

Yes, natural lighting (no flash) at medyo over-exposed nga dahil tanghaling tapat.  Kaya nga makintab din yung wings nila dahil sa tama ng araw.

Here is another black-winged damselfly...

Practice lang Sir!  Until now I keep shooting and practicing my Macro.  I think I need to plan this summer to go back in Tanay and devote time  with "Dragonflies and Damselflies" since nowhere here in Manila I can find an opportunity to shoot MACRO like this...

SABONG

Sayang, it could have been picture perfect dahil parang nagsasabong ang mga damselflies.  Actually, apat sila (notice yung lower right and left portion na na-cropped) dahil during that time, i was using a 300mm fixed lens with 1.4x teleconverter.  Wala na akong time na umatras dahil mabilisan at saka 1.5m ang minimum distance ko sa subject kaya cropped talaga.  At first, I hardly noticed na apat sila (two pairs of mating damselflies).  Hinayang talaga dahil kulang pa sa practice.
