Ef Lens 200 question (zoom or prime)
« on: February 28, 2008, 06:22:12 PM »
Hello
Newbie question.
Just want to know which one most people in this forum prefer?? And which one is the most logical buy. And why?
70-200 f4L? or 200 2.8L II?
I'm on a budget and both lens cost almost the same.
I love using my 17-40 but i love my 85 as well and the effects of large aperture. I just feel i need to have the option of having a compact telephoto in my kit just in case the shot calls for it.
Partly also, GAS na din. A friend suggested that wait nalang until you have money to buy 70-200 2.8 L IS. I told him i cant kasi  i have low EQ. ;D
But seriously i find it too big. I'm also considering the Ef100 f2.8 macro as a next purchase after whichever  200(zoom or prime)

Inputs greatly appreciated.

Thank you very much PIPHO!

wow... mukang mahilig ka talaga sa primes sir ah...

for me kasi, i'll go for the much more versatile 70-200... but that's me... i dont want to always walk forward or backward if i want to frame something... hehe!
however, i know primes in a way will be optically better than zooms most of the time if not always... ;)

where do you plan to use the 200mm f2.8 by the way? :)

if you're willing to sacrifice versatility of a zoom, then go ahead. 200 2.8 is a good lens. You can also check out 135 2L.

personally, i would want the 70-200 L lens.

Di naman mahilig. Nagkataon lang. 3 months palang ako my dslr. Im using a 400d btw. Where do i plan to use it?? Honestly, i tried palang looking tru a 200 lens once. (thanks to Jeric) Minsan lang parang bitin pag your limited to 85mm. As of now, i consider 200 to be my longest end limit.

I'm thinking of the 135L too. I'm also thinking the 100 2.8 macro can (Maybe??) fill the gap if i opt to choose the prime. But honestly, i can only imagine the diff between 100 and 135 but don't have actual experience.

RandMcnally and GEEboy, thankyou for the quick reply.
Anyone here owns both?? Which one do you use more often??

Follow your heart dude. It looks like your partial to the f/4 IS. Go for it for several reasons:

1. Its the sharpest lens among the 70-200 L
2. Its L, thus resale value will always be high.
3. Its light and powerful enough for a tele. Your 17-40 will be fully utilized as well.

I would go for the 70-200 f4 L IS as well. It's a lot more versatile and the IS is an great feature to have.

If yyou want primes, I think a 135mm f2 would be nice and add a teleconverter 2x or 1.4x so you can take farther shots.

So you will have your 17-40, 85mm, 135mm, 85mm x2 at f4, 135mm x 2 at f4 :)

hmm... looks like budget is not an issue here.. hehe! considering na 3months SLR user ka pa lang, eh ang dami mo na agad lens! :D

if you want sir, get first the 70-200mm... (with this u'll have a 70mm , a 100mm, a 135mm and a 200mm.. ) hehe!
try it out and if it does not pass to your liking then sell it here, i'm sure marami kukuha nyan... ;)
then that's the time you buy the prime... :)

Thanks all for the reply.
Will add the 135 to the list of option.
Budget is indeed an issue. I would  love to have the IS of the 70-200 but budget permits me to only buy the non IS version. I will not get the lens in manila. So, i was thinking that since prices internationally of the 200L II and the 70-200 f4L non IS is the same, its a good comparo. The fast vs the versatile.
The 135L costs a little bit more.
Is the non IS version, as sharp as the IS version of the 700-200? Considering for example both is pod mounted.

Thank you jovijovi for the logic you put in it.
Than you Super_ed.
More ideas welcome.. Good day to all

nope, i do have the 70-200 4LIS but was thinking of buying a 135L. 70-200 works perfect for me though so the 135L idea just got sidelined permanently.

I'm also considering the Ef100 f2.8 macro as a next purchase after whichever  200(zoom or prime)

Richie, If it's the 1st lens in this range I would suggest getting the 70-200 f/4L, versatility of the zoom can't be underestimated with having more flexibility.  If you have more money, I suggest you get the IS f/2.8 version.  I have a very sharp copy of this unit, and I never regretted getting it.

Now, the 200 2.8II is a fixed prime lens.  And as in all prime lenses, application and daily use is a factor to determine.  If it will be rarely used, then you know what the answer to that would be.  I also have a 200mm prime.  But I opted to get the f/1.8L.  it's one of the sharpest lenses canon has ever produced.  Going beyond the 200mm range is a rare event in my photography, but I'd still like to have the arsenal to reach beyond.  So I opted for this lens and went stacking up canon multipliers 1.4 and 2x when needed.  That's how I justified this path, better than breaking my back and my pocket  with a 300 or a 400mm.

Keeping a portraiture /macro lens is a must,  so the  100mm 2.8 is a good choice.  There are better dedicated lenses for the tasks, but this is a good compromise.

Good luck on your choices.

Thank you all for the reply. At first , to be honest i'm leaning towards the 200 f2.8L II, Your right, its my first in this range so might as well go for the zoom.
Thank you folks, appreciate the logic you put in your replies.

Keith ks888, puntahan kita minsan just to try that 200 2.8L  of yours. That sigma na pinasubok mo is still part of my wish list.

70-200 f4L non IS is go. ;D

Thank you PiPho
