Worthy purchase? Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 to replace 18-70 kit lens
« on: January 03, 2008, 11:33:50 AM »
hi guys/girls,
i currently have a tokina 12-24 paired with my 18-70 kit lens.

would it be a worthy purchase to get the Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 as a walk around lens to replace my kit lens?
-good pairing with 12-24
-fast lens
-for the size, weight, speed, and great reviews, it is very reasonably priced.

some will say to look at other brands since Tamron does not have local service.  however, with many sources offering store warranties, i don't find this to be an issue.  also, i have siblings based in the US so i can opt to get this with a 6-year USA warranty.

for those that have had experiences with both lenses, i would appreciate your inputs.

thanks in advance!

As a walk around lens? Not to good, its not wide enough. Though you have a 12-24 to match it with, a walk around lens usually means bringing only 1 lens.

the tamron 28-75 is not a good walkaround lens, i have the tamron and sigma 18-200.... even if the IQ of the tamron is comparable to "L"s, I usually end up  using the sigma just to make sure I get a "generally nice" set of photos covering wide to zoom...

If you want good portraits, or taking pictures of people in  a considerably sized room (group pics), the tamron is excellent.

I think you'll miss the distortion offered by the 18~28mm range if you use the 28-75 2.8f lens. If you don't mind switching lens, and you're not afraid of getting dust in your camera, why not? Maybe you can try fixing you focal range at 28mm, and see if you have any trouble using that focal length for you style of shooting.

hi guys,
i realize now that what i meant to ask if the Tamron is a worthy replacement to the 18-70 kit lens.

I shouldn't have asked if it were a good walk around lens as i understand a walk around to be one that encompasses a wide range such as the 18-200vr...since i have a 12-24 and a 70-300, i was looking at replacing my kit lens with a faster lens. Don't mind changing lenses.

With my clarification, are your opinions on the Tamron the same?  Thanks again for your inputs!

28-75. like they say, near "L" like qualities.

i had both, 17-50 and 28-70. i disposed of the 17-50, then again, i missed it's wide angle coverage. but the image quality of the 28-70 tops it easily. you just might be frustrated at the not-so-wide 28 at times, but since u have ur 12-24..ok na yan.

I have the 28-75 f/2.8, and it is on my cam 70% of the time. I think it should be a good replacement for your kit lens. Great IQ without breaking your budget. Just my 2 cents...

i also have the tamron 28-75mm and it's on my camera most of the time. the others are right when they say medyo bitin sa wide end. but since i take  head and shoulder shots of people most of the time, mas gamit ko ang long end ng zoom. sa tutuo lang, medyo bitin pa nga ako sa 75mm. that's when me concerts akong kinukunan.

Get the Tamron 28-75, I've been using it for more than 3 years doing studio portraits. Focusing is not that fast and soft beyond 15ft, in my experience.

i am also a satisfied user of the tamron 28-75. bang for buck. since you already have the wide lens to pair with your 28-75. then i think it's fine. it's really sharp although it hunts in low light but just OK in bright sunlight. if you're planning to shoot events, this is not the lens for you. just my 2 centavos.
catch the light.
