see my earlier post about my Sigma 24-70 EX. I actually have BOTH the Canon and Sigma lenses you mentioned. Optically, they seem very similar, but on some pictures, especially under harsh sunlight, the color of the Canon lens looks just a bit better (subjective). The zoom on the Sigma is stiff and will be easier to use as time goes by. Focus is slow compared to the Canon, but is expected since it does not have USM/HSM built into it. My 24-70 Sigma EX focuses much LOUDER and is irritating if it would be used in a place of worship. USM is quiet and decently fast as is most USM lenses. Sigma's USM is called HSM. Never tried it, but after wasting my daughter's graduation to soft and blurry pictures to my Sigma 24-70, it'll probably be the last Sigma I'm buying.

Reason I have both is because I attached a polarizer to my Sigma so it's on hand anytime I need it when I have to change lenses without having to dig into my bag. Also, I tend to rely on my Canon during low-light shots more than the Sigma since it has a lot of difficultly focusing where light is scarce (despite the 2 lenses being f/1:3.5-5.6's). Both lenses tend to show 'softer' pics at 300mm but that's natural for most zoom lenses I guess when they reach their maximum focal lengths. Both are amazingly sharp at 200mm.

Pwede na, at around 12k brand new it's a steal compared to the Canon, but make sure to test it for back focus problems.

I have tried the Sigma 70-300 and own a Canon 75-300mm USM III. Mikey is correct in saying the Sigma version autofocuses slower than that of Canon. Also, Canon performs better in low light even if it also hunts a lot in that condition.

Same with what Mikey stated, both are soft at 300mm and really sharp from 100-200mm.

One area where Sigma gets the advantage is the minimum focusing distance due to its Macro capabilities. Canon's 75-300's minimum focusing distance is at 1.5 meters, whereas Sigma's is a little more than 1 foot.

If you're not shooting under lowlight ( indoor sports ) and is more into Macro, get the Sigma, otherwise I'd recommend Canon.

HTH.

God bless!

I tried the Canon and it's ok for the price. It's just that they also let me try the IS USM version and nawalan tuloy ako ng gana kasi ang laking tulong ng IS pag naka full zoom.

Sigma I like coz Sigma is the one that fits my budget. Quality-wise? I'd say, it can compete with Canon brand.

hahaha! YEAH! Those were the days, sana naka 70-300 ka na noon so you could take pictures going up Binictican Road! :) i'll continue this on PM - OT na tayo

Back on topic - taken with my Sigma 70-300 APO DG Macro with circular polarizer at 70mm. Not bad i think... Turned a bit soft because of the polarizer, but nice vivid contrast. Not the best, but not bad :)

I too had a Sigma 70-300.  I was quite happy with it.  I did some research prior to getting this lens.  Searched various sites to compare the Sigma and Canon.  In the end I was very satisfied with my choice.  The Sigma served me well.  The only reason I replaced it was because the AF was a bit slow for taking action shots.

The Sigma lens was a classic example for bang for the buck.  For the price, you really can'y go wrong.

By the way, how do you post pics?  I'd like to share a few pics taken with the Sigma.
