Canon 5d & 1d mkII N difference (splitted & merged topics)
« on: March 07, 2006, 09:56:08 AM »
sir Oculus, Question lang po, why did you choose the 1D over the 5D ( aside from the faster 8.5fps vs 3fps continious mode) Won't a full frame produce sharper image with much finer details? thanks.

As I said in a previous post I was wavering between the 2 as both are nice, but these are my reasons as far as I can tell.......Aside from the 8.5 fps like you mentioned, built like a tank, rated for 200,000 shutter actuations, Weather proof, faster more accurate 45 point AF(actually faster everything since it purportedly has 2 CPU's and uses 1 CPU for AF and lens related controls and 1 CPU for image processing and camera functions), ISO setting always in the viewfinder, Multiple spot metering. Uses CF and SD card simultaneously, 8 MP is fine with me tipid pa sa memory(Also, I can't tell the difference between 8MP and 12MP shots and I don't print large) :), don't shoot wide that much, also less vignetting at wide apertures because of the 1.3 crop making use of the best part of the lens(just like the 20D) and others that escape me at the moment.  Best of all, I like the controls and the overall feel of the Pro 1 series body.  For a hobbyist, It exhibits the same pride of ownership much like owning an STI pistol(which I have) or a Ferrari(which I wish I had ;D  ;D  ;D

Sir oculus, Ano po price difference nya?

I can answer that. :) For brand new, price difference ranges from P60k to P80k depending on where you're buying.

The 5D and the 1D are two different animals. The 1D is really meant for sports/events shooting where speed is of the essence and for photojournalism where the camera undergoes extreme use.

I was watching the latest military problem in the Fort about two weeks ago and the more agitated the situation was, the more the press photogs were there to cover the events unfolding. There was a lot of pushing, running, a lot of shoving around, things which the 1D can easily survive.

The 1D is a tank, and its speed is comparable to nothing. One time in Mr. K's studio we were able to borrow a 1D MkIIn and a 28-300 L lens to play around. They shot continuous (till the buffer was full) of me jumping and the images they shot could easily be made into video because the images taken were so close to each other. In fact, if you review the pictures using the Canon wheel, it's like you're watching a movie.  :)  It also sounds like an Uzi when shot continuous in hi-speed mode.

The 5D is great for anything else, for studio, portraits, candids, and when you want to carry light. I think they produce both clean images with high ISO.

I'm not saying you can't use the 5D for sports or it's not durable (or you can't use the 1D for portraits and studio use). It's just not what it's intended to be used for.

Thanks very much for the patience in explaining things to me sir Oculus and Sir Tonettetem. Is it true that the 5d is more prone to dust contamination daw due to its large sensor?  KAsi if I can't get a good copy 20D I might get a 5D ( Nangarap naraman) hehehehe

Re: the 5D maybe so, but in addition, the 5D according to reports(if they are to be believed) is more prone to dust contamination under the AA filter as the sides aren't well sealed and there is a clearance,so dust can get sandwiched between the AA filter and the sensor, something you can't remove with swabbing.  The problem they say is aggravated by too vigorous blowing of the sensor which at times forces the dust in between the two layers.

There is more dust on the sensor of the 5D as compared to my old 10D and because of the bigger sensor size, it does catch dust easily but nothing you cannot fix with swabbing.

I think dust will be a problem of cameras regardless of brand or model and the thing we should learn is how to clean our sensor well. If we're too careful with avoiding dust in our cams so much so that we "baby" the camera and avoid photo ops where dust can be a problem, then we defeat the purpose of having a camera, that is, shooting wonderful, moving images.  :)

I agree with everything you said but and the big BUT for me is I live in a very dusty industrial place and it will surely worsen the dust situation for me and being an OC type person makes it even worse. :(

Hehe.. if that's the case, maybe you need the weather seals of the 1D. Get L lenses which are sealed also so you won't have a problem with dust or rain anymore. That's what the 1D is made for, tough, unforgiving situations/environment.

The Canon 1D Mark II N is the best camera canon ever built! :)

With the EF 17-40 4L lens you have the best wide angle lens here when using 1D Mark II N. But with the Canon 5D it will look like a cr@p at 17mm according to my friend who owns a Canon 5D and 17-40 4L.

Since the 5D is more prone to dust I guess I shouldn't even consider it anymore. Yun lang as a beggining hobbyist, I can't justify the cost of the 1D MkIIn - its just not a wise way to use money specially with the economy being like this these days. :(

I finally decided that at this stage in time, spendign extra for a 5D and lalo na for a 1D MkIIn will be a big waste of moeny on my prt, as I am just starting out.... I decided to go back to the 20D  (hot pixels and all) and since the hot pixels doesn;t show up in regular /everyday photos, I will learn to live with it and stop being so OC - I have wasted too much time searching and researching the "perfect" camera and feel that I am poorer because I wasted my time looking for something that is not there instead of just learning and enjoying the photography experience. :)
