Being the only landlocked town within the the western part of the province Mabini, Pangasinan is however endowed with vast and relatively rugged topography that secludes some of it's seemingly unique features. Let me share some images of a place where I was born, raised and learned to enjoy being outdoors.

Balincaguin River

A major river system that cuts through five towns within the province and twelve of the sixteen barangays of the municipality where it is fed by it's highland tributaries, draining at Agno Bay in Agno, Pangasinan. Because of this, the river is often mistaken to be the Agno River, where in fact is it the Balincaguin River, derived from the old name of Mabini where most of it's major branches flows.

An otherwise tiring three hour trek on exposed terrain got me shooting this pristine cascades at the river boundaries of Mabini and Infanta Towns. August rains would make the return hike over bus sized boulders and high ledges arduous to dangerous, good thing we made it at the end of the trail head before the shower turns to a heavy downpour.

Yes Adam. NDs and graduated NDs to balance exposure.

A bit skeptical to see water falls or interesting rapids on it's upstream part, I gave in to the invitation. I am left with only a couple of options to capture the entirety of this scene form a high vista, with no panning ballhead I made an ambitious attempt for a horizontal pano.

Sawang Falls

A tributary of Balincaguin River, this 15 foot water fall is fed by precipitation collected in adjoining gullies from verdant hills. Sawang falls can be reached by a two hour hike from the Villacorta trailhead via scenic vista overlooking the main river.

Had use my old water mark on this photograph using my then new point and shoot.

down Pita

down Pita by rawen balmaña imagery, on Flickr

Here is a low angle shoot of Pita twin falls using a light tripod. I did get a good exposure but with a lot of work getting my set up still on this swirling water. A magenta cast produced by a locally made ND grad filter made worse by the long exposure has been pre corrected. Shot before a thunderstorm soaking us on our way back to the trailhead where a mini truck awaits. Lucky to have been out of the gorge before the downpour, otherwise negotiating through slick car size boulders, talus filled banks and traversing 30 foot ledges would be tedious.
