I also use a D90 but i dont have the 18-105 kit lens. I have both the nikon 50mm 1.8D and the tamron 28-75 2.8. I chose the 28-75 over the 17-50 coz i rarely use the wide end, and i need the extra reach of the 75mm.

I use the 28-75 for indoor events like parties, weddings, and especially stage events like theater plays where I cant use flash and I cant go very near the stage. Plus, the 28mm is wide enough for my needs.

I use the 50mm when shooting portraits, for the extra sharpness and bokeh.

So I guess it depends on what you shoot.

the 17-50 is my choice because i usually use the widest possible focal length available to capture the entire group, mostly a huge number of people. for the reach its really short and that's the 28-75 shines.. but i'd rather get a real telephoto lens for that. remember there is "NO" 1 lens for all usage. its all up to the TS :)

You are right it really depends on the user. Personally, I'll just keep the 18-105 for awhile. I will buy the 50 1.8D first and see what happens then with my style. After quite sometime I will know if I still need  to upgrade my 18-105. Besides you are greatly compromising your wider end. The 28mm side is not really that wide in DX. IMHO opinion the 18-105 + 50mm 1.8D + a flash is more versatile than the 28-75 + 50 + a flash. Different folks different strokes.

buy the 50mm 1.8d its cheap and will auto focus on your cam kasi may built-in motor na yan and then team it with your 18-105.

If you consider selling your 18-105 and buy 55-200 f4-5.6 its also a cheap lens with good quality pictures.
