Copyright ownership and Usage of Photos
« on: February 21, 2012, 10:34:10 AM »
Does the photographer automatically own the copyright to photos?

In instances where it's a service only shoot, and you give the clients the raw pictures, do you still own the copyright to the photos?  Ie, can the client use the photos for commercial ads, contests etc, without informing you?

Alternatively, can I use my photos (which a professional photographer took, wedding photos for example) for 'themed' fun contests?  [Ie, contests not really judged on the merits of photography, but rather 'wacky' themes like "best kiss" contest or "cutest baby"].   Or am I violating the rights of the photographer?

you  may use the search button then just type in copyright, you will see a couple of topics discussed previously.

For a quick answer in general: The moment the photographers clicks on the shutter button...its the property of the photographer.

For your question on the usage... its up to the agreed contract between the photographer and client. if no contract exists, or if the contract does not stateanything about usage... I suggest and to be fair to the photographer that you ask him about this matter.
Think out of the box.

If you're hired as a corporate photographer though, the company who hired you will own all photos you take during working hours and within the boundaries of your contract.  ;)
