Recently fell victim to this. Bought a "Canon" BG-E8 battery grip from what I thought was a trustworthy store in Megamall (not CameraHaus). Too bad, wala na ako habol kasi beyond 7 days na since I bought it. Anyway, I'd like to share my experience so that it does not happen to anyone else here.

How to tell if your Canon BG E8 is a fake.

Box

1. In front of the box, the phrase "Battery Grip" is written in one or two languages only: Chinese and/or English. (Original will have the phrase in several languages).
2. At the back of the box, it will say "Made in Japan" while grip will say "Made in Taiwan". (Original will have a box and grip that says "Made in Taiwan".)
3. Bottom of box will be plain red. (Original will say Canon Battery Grip BG-E8.)
4. If you have a smartphone, scanning the bar code will lead you to a different product. (Barcodes of original will always lead to the Canon BG-E8 battery grip.)

Grip

1. Battery trays will NOT have the Canon logo and model designation embossed on them.
2. Battery grip will NOT have a serial number.
3. Protective cap of fake is translucent. (Original is opaque.)

Though the fake I got performs ok and could really pass off as original to the uninitiated, Build quality is suspect. I am just pissed that I was given the impression that I was buying an original.

My fault for being such a cheapskate.

Oh well, lesson learned (the expensive way).

If it was advertised as original and what you got was a fake then I think may habol ka diyan, try calling the attention of DTI or something. Pinaghirapan mo pinambili mo sa gadget na yan, dapat lang it's worth your money. ;)

please do not take this the wrong way, but now that you have aired your side of the story, have you tried talking to the guys from the store?

what do they have to say?

in my opinion, even if it is more than 7 days from the day you bought the unit, a courteous confrontation might make the difference. and if they still do not give you a refund or an exchange, then tell them that you would take legal action.

just my 2 cents  ;)

Update: Went back to the store to complain about the fake battery grip. Talked to personnel politely as I did not want to make matters worse. I was told by the supervisor that the salesman should have told me that the grip I was buying was a "Class A"  product (which is a euphemism for "fake") and not an original one. To cut a long story short, since I could not get a refund because I used a credit card, we agreed that I be given store credit instead which I thought was a fair settlement given the circumstances. All's well that ends well I guess.
