Hi Guys, Newbie here and this is my first post!

I have Nikon D80 with the standard kit lens Nikon 18-135 and a Tokina 11-16 2.8 lenses. Since my kit lens is not designed to shoot for low light situations, I decided to get a normal lens that can take in low light situations. I think 35mm is a good normal lens equivalent for DX body like D80 so I did not consider the niffty 50mm1.8 but decide on the 3 lens I listed below instead:

Nikon 38mm 1.8 - I hear this is a very good lens and will autofocus on my D80. Base on the review I've read is that this lens is for DX body only and that CA is a problem. I have not tested this lens so those who already have this, please share your experience with regards to this lens.

Nikon 35mm f/2 - base on what i read from other websites, that this is also a good/sharp lens on almost all apertures (even wide open). And this lens is an FX lens which I think will be my direction sometime in the future. The drawback is that this lens has barrel distortion (according to Ken Rockwell http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/35af.htm)

Sigma 30mm 1.4 - This lens is the fastest lens among the 3. It features HSM functionality aswell. The only drawback is that this lens has some focusing issues and that it is also much expensive compared to the three.

So i'll choose 1 lens and then probably buy Nikon 85mm 1.8 and maybe sell my 18-135.

go for it 85mm is perfect for portrait shots.. used by a lot of professional photographers.. very sharp.

i have almost the same setup & wishlist as you.. tokina 11-16mm, 85mm

but to add will save up for a 70-200vr 2.8 but its so expensive right now. cant justify the purchase.

thanks for your thoughts on the 85. I'm sure it's a great lens. But that's secondary for now my real issue is what 30/35 mm lens is better as a normal lens for low light shooting. Is it the Nikon 35 1.8, Sigma 30mm `.4 or Nikon 35mm f/2?

welcome to PhiPho Johann!

don't have any of these lenses (yet ;D) but here's something to think about...

Nikon 35mm f/1.8
Advantage:
   - great value for its price
   - f/1.8
   - AF-S so AF will work on any Nikon DSLR but you have a D80 so this wouldn't matter to you anyway
   - it's a Nikkor! ;D
Drawback:
   - the only drawback that I can think of is it's DX-only.  You can enjoy it though while you have it and once you go the FF path, you can always sell it here in PhiPho :)

Nikon 35mm f/2
Advantage:
   - FX-ready
   - it's also a Nikkor! ;D
Drawback:
   - f/2.0 only (that is, compared against the f/1.8) but IMO, the 0.2 difference in the opening against the 1.8 wouldn't really matter that much.
   - barrel-distortion according to ken rockwell  ;D
      - BUT I've also read from photozone (http://www.photozone.de) that the barrel distortion on this lens wouldn't be noticeable in real-world situations ;D
   - a bit more expensive than the 35mm f/1.8

Sigma 30mm 1.4
Advantage:
   - f/1.4
   - at 30mm, it's a bit wider than the two lenses above but this being an advantage or a drawback would depend on your shooting style
Drawback:
   - it's NOT a Nikkor!   :D ;D

I'm also planning to get a lens on this focal range and I'm leaning more into the Nikon 35mm f/1.8 AF-S DX...

hope this helps... :)

go nikkor all the way!

so at least for me, that will automatically cross out the sigma lens.

for me, i'd go with the 35mm 1.8. it's the newest lens (among the 3) for DX. in case you do go FX in the future, magagamit mo ba yung 35 f2 as a normal lens? you'll also probably have to change to a 50mm lens to achieve the same "normal" perspective, unless you'd want to use the 35 f2 as a wide lens on the FX body. at kung sakaling mag upgrade ka to FX eventually, mataas naman ang resale value ng nikkor glasses in general eh, so I doubt that you'll have a hard time reselling the 1.8

another thing to consider, the 35 1.8 is AF-S so it might focus faster on the D80 as compared to the 35 f2. the 1.8 is cheaper too as pointed out by kentaps.

Thanks guys... now, im leaning towards the Nikon 35 1.8. How much is it in the Phils? Because here in Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia), it is being sold for RM 790 (or PHP10,665). Is it cheaper to buy lens in the Phils?

i suggest you stick with Nikon all the way. The new 35mm AFS DX would be a good choice for you. if you decide to eventually go to FX, you can always sell it off. The 85mm may be too long for you but i have friends who use its their walk-around lens. Check the prices at Foto Edar & J-One. The price you indicated below should be good enough. Mas cheaper dto plus covered by the usual 1-yr warranty pa.

Pahiram pag meron ka na ah.  ;D

Bang for buck? Go for the 35mm 1.8, fast AF, tact sharp. Got mine the other day via Amazon ($199) P9,500 + P1,100 shipping.

P10,665 in Malaysia is cheap, go grab it! Goodluck!  ;)

(+1) for the 35mm f2 D,
i'm an avid fan of ken rockwell's blunt opinion, but when it comes to lens reviews, i stick to slrgear.com
