First Shoot with a celebrity need help...
« on: March 18, 2009, 01:35:00 PM »
Hi Gurus... I am a newbie in photography. I started around a year ago... did a couple of shoots already pero i am still not that happy with the outputs of my pictures... I am currently using a Nikon D90 with kit lens and 50mm prime. I will be having a shoot this Saturday with a celebrity friend of mine. I am kinda nervous and hoping to match her fhm pictures a couple of months ago... Can you guys give me tips on does and don't, camera setting, lighting, poses and etc... I am planing to do the shoot in a studio para controlled ang lighting... I would appreciate all your inputs. I just want the shoot to come out right... I will post them here once finished. btw, I'll be shooting dresses and bikinis...

Thank you!!!

Ako naka-Nikon! Haha!
Just check the people thread and even the monochrome thread. You'll find a lot of tips, poses and guidelines there. Good luck with the shoot.

It depends on your approach. Some shooters are straight from the cam, some salvaged it thru PP.

As long as you know what you want to achieve, and execute it properly, you'll have a bigger chance of nailing the shots.

Since your friend already declared that you're the only shooter, and don't want to have any invitation, I would suggest that you start searching You Tube on tips about studio lighting and shooting.

Because it's really hard to give you instructions without any hands-on or practical examples. I can always say, set your cam to ISO 100, 1/200, F/8.0 then meter your key light to this setting, minus 1 for the fill, etc. etc.. But How will you apply that? How will you position your lights? How many lights will you use? etc... Unless you already have seen the clothes she will wear, you can match your background and lighting, the makeup, the mood, etc...

I am not discouraging you or anything, but shooting at a studio is like going to war, you need the preparation, mindset, motivation and proper gear to achieve your goals. Go to a war without any experience, and you'll likely to killed.

 :)

Since you have been shooting for a while, I suppose you have an idea about studio lighting since that's the venue you chose.  I'm no professional but it's better to be yourself.  Anyway the celebrity is your friend and he/she will understand if you fumble.  He/she might even give you tips on what she observed with other photographers.  Are you sure you don't need someone to serve coffee or refreshments?  I'm at your beck and call.
Be good to the people you meet on your way up because they will be the same people you will meet on your way down.

THe question is very general, thus the answers you will receive will be such. There is infinite lighting combinations that can be done, using as little as 1 light to a full blown 6 or more lights. What to use is defined by the outcome you want. If she is your friend, then experimenting with what works, though tiring, would probably your best bet. Though given the infinite possible combinations, there is still a chance that you won't nail the photo you do want specially if your knowledge of studio is very limited. Stick to as little lights as possible, adding more light will make it more complicated and can either make or break your photo.

As for how to set your camera, you probably figured it out already that the setting you will need on your camera is dictated by how you set the lights.

Good luck.

Ken

If you cannot bring someone knowledgeable on studio shooting, one option is to invite a Piphol, whose shots you like, treat him lunch or coffee and have a little chat about your project.

Cheers!

shooting a celebrity is no diff. from shooting other human model subjects. browse the net for photos you like imitate what you see or make it even better, reverse engineer the light setup, this should get you started.
It's hard to beat a good photographer with the right camera.
