Reverse Lens Adapter for Extreme Macro Photography
« on: October 26, 2007, 03:31:36 PM »

Reverse Lens Adapter

Normal prime lenses can take sharper close-up photos when they are turned around backwards. A Reverse Lens Adapter lets you do this.

What does the Reverse Lens Adapter do?
One side of the Reverse Lens Adapter is threaded to fit the filter rim of your lens. The other side of the adapter has a lens mount like the one your camera lens has. Screw the adapter onto your lens' filter rim, turn the lens around and bayonet mount it into your camera. That's it. You can now shoot extreme macro photography.
Once attached, you will have to set aperture manually (your lens should have aperture ring). As to focusing, it is done by moving your distance from the subject. Moving the focusing ring usually has very little effect,

Many thanks Brian. I just got this and it is well made and sturdy. Perfect for the job.

For Canon users, you can also use your EF lenses. Listed below are the steps.

1. Mount your lens normally.
2. Set your desired aperture value.
3. Press and HOLD the depth of field preview button.
4. While holding the DOF button, unmount your lens.
5. Release the DOF button after unmounting the lens. Check the lens and you will see that its aperture is closed down based on the value you set in your camera.
6. You can now mount the adapter and the reversed lens.

Hope these helps.
do... or do not. there is no try.

many thanks Brian.

zando, in the first page of my flickr site, you will find images with the tag reversed lens. before, i used a duct tape to connect my reversed lens to my kenko tubes in order to achieve high magnifications. now, it is made simple by the reverse lens adapter.

you can also check out the thread started by edsel regarding reversed lens: http://www.pinoyphotography.org/forum/index.php?topic=17651.0 and his article as well on reversed lens: http://www.naturephotosociety.org.sg/ASP/Article.asp?DBAPublishDate=1/10/2005

hope these helps.

Awesome macro photos!!!

Thank guys! How do you protect the reverse side of the lens when reverse mounted?

place a tape on the exposed connectors. that does the trick. or if you have a clear plastic you can place it on the lens, however it may cause distortions...

@KNJO, thanks for the tip. Appreciate it.
The easiest way of protecting the contacts would be to use 3M magic tape - that way, you don't worry about leaving any adhesive residue on the contacts. Hope this helps.
