hi Elmer

Lightroom. Im trying to like aperture but im having a hardtime using it. Personal preference i choose lightroom.

I re-processed this using lightroom 1.1 from labeling it by flags then stars up to processing colors, crop and IPTC cataloging, it will never be easier with softwares like this. I also tested some 5d files and its is much faster not tad faster.

What is an ideal work flow when using Lightroom with your raw files?

im starting to manage my photos with lightroom.. you can organize, using meta files and many others+ adjusting  you images is a magic.. its like treating your jpegs as a raw... galeng.
i would say.. MUST have.

I shoot with picture styles so in order not to loose the in cam image processing informations, i unchecked the default develop settings para walang magalaw, 1.1 improved this settings now.

Workflow

1.) Download
Download photos by Year - Month - Date
Browse library first (grid mode) "G"
Label photos
- Flagged - I like it
- Unflag - i dont like it
- Flagged as reject - i really dont like it

2.) Labeling
Browse again and make 2nd look
Browse with Flagged label on
-you can only see flagged photo of course
-Use star rating
-3 stars for - hmmmm
-4 stars for - alright
-5 stars for - ang galing ko :D

When im in a project of mixed types of photos, i use the color labels to separate them.
for example
red - for still life
blue - details
green - for portraits

3.) keywording
Ok so now is the time of metadata and keywording
metadata i only put name, address, tel number and copyright notice
keywording - Broad > general > specific

4.) Develop
Now is the time to Develop (D)
i have 27 presets settings from processing no skies, browning, unreal, b&w, almost b&w, landscape, HDR like, vibrant less contrast.

I process accordingly if it needs more tweaking then i go on if not it will go straight to export.

5.) Export
Export
Export first as 16bit Tiff, sRGB or aRGB depends on my usage at 300dpi
after this export as websize 72dpi jpegs check constraints 640px for all sides, it will automatically resize it to 640px as the widest side.

Then i just use photoshop for watermarking.

regie,

just to confirm, this is for jpegs, right?

kasi if it's for raw, lightroom will still render the image from the raw data using its own parameters (ignoring picture styles)...

or could it be that the initial rendering matches canon's in cam processing?

cheers,
lloyd

hi Lloyd i overlooked that yes that is for jpegs only, for raw there is a slight change in color and you can only get accurate "true" pciture styles with DPP conversion. What i did was adjust the camera calibration panel on the bottom part of the develop panel to match in cam settings i still cant perfect the color matching but its near enough.

This is the new settings im saying about walang magagalaw,

im not sure if thats already there or i only noticed it just now.

The clarity slider now adds enhancement to edges like mountains etc.
Cloning healing tool has been improved but still prefer photoshop for this
It now downloads RAW+jpeg although the jpeg doesnt show up in library.

doesn't v1.1's "treat JPEG files next to RAW files as seperate photos" option attend to that?

i'm trying to make it usable on a notebook...  and it generally is...  but when the wb is badly screwed up (indoor, different light sources, with flash), it's so difficult to get it right...

i'm beginning to suspect that the melissa colour space (based on prophoto) is just too much for notebook screens to handle...

Yeah it download to you folder but it doesnt show up in the library, I didnt verify if it edits the jpegs.

Yeah one of the shortcomings of lightroom no color space viewing preferences or could i be missing it? whats melissa colour space btw ? ;)

jeff schewe's "definition"...

Lightroom uses the Pro Photo chromaticies (the color coordinates) but not the gamma. LR's gamma internally is gamma 1. The histogram display is a tuned sRGB tone curve. But Lightroom's internal color space is _NOT_ "Pro Photo RGB".

Internally, it's called Melissa RGB after Melissa Gaul, head of Q&E for Lightroom. We all decided to call it Melissa RGB since there weren't any color spaces named after women.

i find that the screen limitations of notebooks sometimes makes it a challenge to correct a severely odd wb...  i'm guessing that it's because it just can't properly display such a wide gamut of colours...  i mean, the notebook screen is typically smaller than sRGB, gamut-wise...

i know serious editing should editing should be done on a proper "workstation"...  just wondering about events photographers that normally have the prints at the lobby before the event is over...  a portable (laptop/notebook) is most convenient for that...

and yeah...  no soft-proofing doesn't help at all...

oh i see thats why its called melissa. lets see on the next version. i wonder why they didnt consider a preference for different working color space.

the beauty of it is that you can start with the presets and use the other tools as you learn...

i heard that it's also being bundled with the 40D in korea...

Eversince I got my hands on lightroom it has always been my workhorse.  I always go thru lightoom 1st.   I only open cs3  if i still need to tweak some more  but usually LR gets the job done.
