D7100+Sigma 18-35 1.8 or D600+what lens?
« on: August 16, 2013, 12:36:00 PM »
Hi folks!

Mga naglalaro lang sa isipan ko. Feel free to express your opinion:

I'm thinking of upgrading my current set-up of D7000 + Tamron 17-50 2.8 VC (luckily, a sharp and crisp copy). My 2 options:

a.) D7100 + Sigma 18-35 1.8

b.) D600 + what lens???

Regarding sa option A:
I'm a prime lens type of guy. I loved my setup of Nikon 35 1.8g and Sigma 85 1.4. However, with 35 1.8, I often find myself wanting wider shots when the situation requires. THen Sigma released it's revolutionary 18-35 1.8, at a very good price point! Reading up on its reviews, it seems to be the perfect solution to my problem. Based from what I understand, some say it's like having primes from 18-35! Perfect! However, it's only for cropped sensor, and so far, the best for Nikon is D7100 with its larger pixels, more focus points, and all that. So that's that.

However, I'm also interested in shifting to full frame....so comes...

Option B:
My budget can only afford (or atleast I can feasibly plan to save for) Nikon D600. So D800 and above are out of the question. However, I want a full frame counterpart of the Sigma 18-35 1.8. I've read a few sites mentioning a rumored 24-70 f2? So far, it's still a rumor so it's also out of the question (for now).

So...what do you think? I'm curious to know what others think here. Is staying in the cropped territory for D7100 and Sigma 18-35 1.8 combo a good and best choice as of the moment? Should I wait for the release of the rumored lens? Ofcourse, if I consider budget, almost over budget nako for a D600 and a theoretical 24-70 f2.

Anyone out there share the same sentiments?

I'm curious to know what others have to say about this. Please, share your thoughts! Thanks!

My cup of tea:
1.) I will stay with d7000 and add the 18-35 unless your d7000 has AF problems.
2.) The dust and oil issue with d600 is not yet resolved. If it won't bother you then it is all up to you.

If the d7100 can inspire you go ahead but any advantage of the d7100 with 18-35 1.8 over the d7000 with 17-50 maybe not that large probably ( I have not tested the Sigma yet).

I think the better pathway is going FX, that is if you can deal with the d600 issues.

Personally , I will just save my money and look elsewhere other than Nikon.

To each his own.

for me, ayoko sumakit ulo ko sa D600 kakapalinis ng sensor, and marami narin nagbebenta ng mga d600 nila because of the oil and dust spots issue sa sensor, better kung low shutter count na D700, and like what you have said, prime boy ka, either 28mm f1.8 G or 24mm f2.8, OR best combo...the ever reliable na 50mm f1.8 D or G, wide enough na yan sa Fx body na kukunin mo, in the end kasi lilipat at lilipat ka rin sa Fx, so if may budget ka na, go for Fx na sir, you won't regret it once nag Fx ka... pwede mo out yung current setup mo, then konti nalang dagdag mo for Fx, opinion ko lang po ito... hehe... good luck sir, in the end choice mo parin ang masusunod :)

Ganun pa rin ba katindi oil issues ng D600? Di na kasi ako gaanong kaupdated eh. So you think D700 is the better way to go?

Ive only read a few sites reviewing D7100. Kaunti lang ba advantages niya from D7000? Prob lang sa D7000 ko, mga non-image related issues like yung mejo stiff on/off button and erratic contact of the left navigation button. Pero ok pa rin siya overall. Naattract lang ako sa additional focus points of the D7100, which I often found myself wishing the D7000 had.

So kung upgrade sa D7100,I'm paying a lot for just a few upgrades?

I'm really interested sa 18-35, just because some reviews even claimed near (if not same) prime quality. Pero yun nga, kapag nagmove ako sa full frame, I lose the prime-like Sigma zoom lens.

Keep sharing please! Some more food for thought. Thanks!

Haha I don't know why I needed to hear it from another person, pero seems to me what you said is the most logical step, for now. Now how do I scratch my full frame itch....

Thanks for the comments! Pag-iisipan ko pa ring mabuti to. But thank you.

Siguro yung itch in going FF mahirap mawala hanggat di tayo nagkakaroon..

Better invest on good lens muna bago ung body. D7000 is enough is you put sharp lens on it. :) mahirap mag full frame kasi kelangan mo din ng good lens to highlights its capability. If prime guy ka. Better invest on 1.8G lens or if kaya 1.4D lens. Maxado costly ung mga 1.4G :)

 d7000 + 28 1.8 g + 105 1.8g/85 1.8g atleast ready ka na sa FF if ever.

For general purpose photography?

D600 + 35/1.4 + 85/1.4

DX doesn't have a lot of affordable small and fast primes, while FX gets you access to cheaper primes like the 20/2.8 or 3rd party ones like the SamBowRok 14/2.8 and giving you a real wide option

Why don't you just get the Sigma 18-35mm f1.8 lens and see how that works for you. Sell the other lenses if that is good for your style.

Kapag may full frame kana, in most cases the 24mm is all you need which is equivalent to 16mm on dx. Once you have a full frame, you wont look back to dx except for certain situations.

D610 para iwas sa d600 oil and dust issue + the new 35mm 1.8 or 35mm 1.4 if afford for your semi wide all around lens. ;D

I have both d610 and d7100. Medyo nangangati ako to swap my d7100 to a used d700 kaso konti lang din ang difference nila in terms of IQ plus mas madaming bells and whistles ang d7100. Kagaya ng sabi ng isang nagcomment, once you go fx you won't look back sa dx.

I've recently tried a D600 and was quite impressed with the images it spewed out. If you don't mind cleaning the occasional dust/oil, I agree with some posters here that FF is the way to go. A used D700 should serve you well, as well as save on Php vs getting a new D600.

Bought a d600 with dust/debris on the sensor. I don't mind not cleaning it, i shoot wide-open to f/5.6 80% of the time where the dust isn't noticeable and when i shoot at f/8 and smaller, the image is busy enough that i don't notice anything. I was also on the fence about the d600 because of the issue but believe me, the image quality, dynamic range, high iso performance more than makes up for it.

Another factor to consider is, what do you plan to shoot.

For me ang D7100 is good for sports, wildlife and landscape. Lamang sya sa AF points, sa reach, at sa DOF. D600/D610 for general photography.
