is it solely for photo editing? then may i suggest you to search for the best Photo editing software. Lightroom, Aperture etc.. with your chosen software at least meet the minimum requirements for the software to run properly. of course if you go higher the better.

Cheers,
Jay

you can go for the 13" macbook pro or even the new macbook wtih 7 hours battery life. if you compare the same spec pc notebook with that of the 13" macbook you will find that the price is the same. the cheaper pc notebooks are using the slower processors.

Are you you only open to getting a laptop or are you considering a desktop station?

The best? Simple. Go with the one with the highest specs available. A gaming laptop or desktop setup with the latest hardware will not disappoint you. Also, you need to get your monitor color calibrated.

Yes, you should calibrate and profile your monitor on a regular basis.

However, consider also the monitor when setting up a computer for photo editing purposes.

I've encountered several headaches in the past.  People ask for tech support when consulting about how to calibrate and profile their displays.

We've had a few cases where we couldn't accurately calibrate and profile a user's computer monitor because it wasn't good enough for the intended purpose.

Cheers!

Sir Jo how about the glossy new lcd monitor of macbookpro are they good for photoediting? Does a glossy lcd really make your eyes believe that the colors are nice. How about checking the pictures you edited on your mbp with other LCD screen malaki po ba pagkakaiba? Im just wondering with the effect of a glossy mirror like lcd like the new mbp.

Thanks,

Hello Guys,

I just want an opinion on which is the best PC or Laptop to buy for photography?  ???

Best?

Desktop PC with the following specs:

Intel Core2 Quad/i7 processor
4GB (or atleast 2GB of RAM, Corsair, OCZ, or Team) kingston? I don't think so.
300-500GB SATA Hard Disk (1TB is too much for an internal drive, buy an external if you want more capacity)
Videocard with atleast 512MB of RAM (nVidia, ATI), QuadroFX is one of them.
19"-24" size of LCD monitor (Glossy, HD, etc, any kind but make sure calibration software will work on it eg Spyder3Express) I find Samsung are one of the good monitors for photo editing.

Cost: P30-P60k

HTH! ;)

I use a 22" LCD monitor from Acer...cost around $200 and use spyder 3 to calibrate.

Processor: AMD Phenom X4 Quadcore 9950 (2.6 Ghz)
Memory: 4 x 2GB = 8GB
Hard drive: Western Digital Velociraptor 150GB
Slave Drive for storage: 2TB
Video Card: 512MB DDR2 HIS Radeon HD 3450 HDMI
Motherboard: Asus M3A78 Pro
Power Supply: 700 Watts
Cooling System: Air cooled
Case: Antec Twelve Hundred full tower
Operating System: Windows XP x64
Extras: 7 in 1 Card Reader, USB Bluetooth, external Drives for backup.

.....the best for multi-tasking....photo editing using CS3 or CS4...can run multi programs without slowing down....

Whole cost for a system like this: more or less 70-80K.

Thanks,

I prefer the matte screen of my older MBPs.  Besides, you can't use a Spyder2 with the newer glossy screens.  You'll have to get a Spyder3.

The colors of the glossy screen MBP isn't accurate straight from the factory (as is the case with most displays).

But my Spyder3 Elite does a good job of making its colors accurate.

I'm already waiting for a Spyder3 Express to arrive :D

Di kailangan branded ang computer mo. :) Ok pa rin chop-chop since you don't have to pay for "brand" premiums. Pic below is my rig. :)

Ika nga ng Intel. Its what's inside that counts.

Overclocking isa sa mga hobbies ko and I'm a proud member of Davao City's overclocking club. :)

Eto medyo dated na ang specs. But still kicks *toink* for both gaming and photography needs ko. I just need to add some more HDD's since nauubos na space ko. ;) A little note din sa specs ng unit ko, this one's not cost efficient since for show ang rig na ito and meron mga talagang mahal na components like water-cooling. Over 100k ang setup na ito back in 2007. 2GB high performance memories before more than 10k each. hehehe

Today, a much more powerful configuration, less the bling will cost you around 40-60k with a 22" LCD Monitor already.

Yup tama si sir Jo.  Mas ok ang matte screens since. What i like about them is they do not produce annoying reflections that gets in the way of work. Medyo maging picky ka sa monitor na gagamitin mo. Pero sa parts, a decent dual-core processor, 4gb ram, a video card, and lots of HDD space will do the job.

Instead of buying a name brand computer mag paassemble ka ng computer, then meron ka pa money para sa lenses, and other photography accessories. :) PM me kung interested ka patulong setup ng computer. I can also refer you to a really good dealer if your in the Metro. :)

+1 here kay Fireice2. Kung hindi mo kaya mag-assemble ng computer you can look for a cousin or a friend who can do this for you kahit bayaran mo lang ng konti dahil mas-malakas na specs at mas mura pa kaysa bumili ng branded unless except kung apple ang bilhin mo.

The newly released macbook white with 7 hrs battery life is Php 54,990 and the 13" macbook pro unibody with 7 hrs battery life is Php 68,990. Both have the same specs except for the sd card slot on the macbook pro and the macbook white has 250gb hd and the macbook pro has 160gb hd. If I were you I would get the mackbook white unless you like the look and feel of the aluminum body.

My complaint about the glossy screen is my images look more contrasty on it compared to my prints (even if I calibrate and profile my computer monitor).

Others have complained that they are distracted by the glossy screen because they see its reflection upon its surface.

I don't have a problem with seeing my reflection on my computer screen since I like how my face looks :D  LOL!

Sir Jo, what is an example of a 'good monitor' (or a bad monitor for that matter) for lets say a Spyder2Express?

TIA

You can't use the current glossy mac displays with the Spyder2.  You'll have to get a Spyder3 :D

Other displays that we tend to avoid are those that are way past their prime.  For example, you generally replace a CRT monitor after 3 years of regular use (it's usually no longer stable enough to accurately calibrate and profile).

A friend once approached me with a problem.  He couldn't accurately calibrate and profile his display.  He bought an expensive computer monitor and we tried to use 3 different brands and models of monitor calibrating and profiling products.  No success.

Cheers!

There is also the option to get a laptop at the same time an external monitor so you have the option to work with a properly calibrated monitor when home, and then take your station and be on the go as well for less color critical work.

slightly OT question: do we really need 4GB of ram for photo editing? i'm thinking of increasing the memory of my macbook aluminum to 4GB. will it have a significant effect on the speed of the laptop?
Title: Re: What is the best PC to be used for photography
Post by: Fireice2 on October 23, 2009, 08:20:44 PM
Yes, 4GB of ram will be a big help. It aids multi-tasking. Kung 2GB lang ram mo at madami ka process na pictures medyo di ka na makagawa ng ibang processes.

Memory is cheap these days wag ka lang sa mga Apple stores punta for an upgrade or else you'll burn 5k for a 2GB upgrade. :) A trip to your friendly computer stores will save you a lot of money without compromising reliability. :)

Yes and no.  Yes, it might make your programs run faster.

But, you might not be utilizing all of it if you're only doing Photoshop :D

I have 4GB of RAM loaded in my laptop.  But only 3GB is recognized by Photoshop.

Even then, I don't think that I'm really using that 3GB to its full potential since I only do simple editing tasks in Photoshop.

Maybe the OS you're using is 32-bit. A 64-bit operating system is needed so that the computer can use more than 3gb of RAM.

Yes, I'm using a 32-bit OS.  But that's part of my point :D

I've encountered people who load up to 8GB of RAM in their computer system thinking that all 8GB will be fully utilized by Photoshop. :D

8GB is overkill already. Hehehe.

But 4GB is quite useful if one uses Photoshop, Lightroom, Indesign at the same time, plus some other background apps. Several times ko na fully utilize ang 4GB hehehe. Pero 8GB is really overkill.

i agree that 8gig is overkill for photo editing, 8 gig of ram or even 16gig of ram are only used for gaming and maybe video editing. 4gig will do. memory modules are cheap these days, so i suggest for 2pcs 2gb ram to maximize you computer hardware.

i think the current value of your 400D is around 20+k.  I'm not sure about the acer resale value, but from  what i see, they don't have high resale value plus you did not mention the type of video card it has.  Though photo editing rely mostly on processor speed and RAM.  From my experience, the current CS5 gobbles a lot of RAM, I have a 6gb installed and it is in the borderline of maxing out the RAM.  A high processor spec also helps a lot on rendering the photo file.

checking the specks online, it comes with an x3100 intel video card. now that chipset is awfully good, it pales in comparison to later chipsets such as the x4500 and so on. but it should work unless you're working with multiple 21+ megapixel images and you'll notice some slowdowns especially with later versions of PS. the resale value though of this laptop I'd say would be less than 20k (considering newer 14" laptops are 30k from neo or even acer). 2gb ram is bare minimum nowadays but ddr2 is still pretty cheap (till it's phased out that is). tell you what, maybe adding 5k on the laptop end would make a nice deal to get yourself upgraded to 4gb minimum ram. also x64 windows is a must. there are workaround to getting an x64 version of acer vista legit  ::)

chop chop pc is still the best for windows based pc. go to gilmore. quadcore Q8400/Q9400 processor pwede na, Nvidia 9800 or GTX series, 500GB sata, get high end Ram yung makapal (para makaoverclock ka pa ng mataas balang araw), high wattage power supply mga 500watts and up (mas matibay kasi ndi pwersado) less than 33k tower only.

or you can go Macbook kahit ndi Pro pwede na atleast Core2. im using CS5 sa Macbook(not Pro) kaya naman, not sure kung kaya multiple pictures open sa CS5 pero kung pa isa isa kayang kaya ng mac.

The best PC is the most expensive one you can afford. It all boils down to 3 factors - CPU speed, RAM size, and hard drive speed. Everything else is secondary in my opinion.

Anyone here who tried RAID setup? PS eats up a lot of hard disk space as virtual memory during processing. I'm currently using 3 SATA non-partitioned drives. One for OS, one for data, and another as scratch disk for PS. A whole lot better than a one drive setup with partition.  :D

I made a Network Attached Storage (NAS) box last year from parts I purchased in HK (Atom nettop, 4 green 2tb WDs plus 1 320gb 2.5" for os) in a raid 5 config. I get about 6tb in storage (but with redundancy) and my  r/w speeds near that of an ssd at a fraction of the price.

the best pc for photo editing is at least a 3.2ghz cpu a 4gb of RAM and at least a dedicated video card of at least 1gb of memory...then your all set.mabilis na yun but if you like the best buy a quad core cpu, 8gb of RAM and video card with SLI for Nvidia or Crossfire for ATI yan gahit anung software pang photo editing kyang kaya! laht din ng GAMES kya and di hirap kaso mahal hehehe

I'm also a pc enthusiast. And I just upgraded my pc since my old pc (which is E6600, RoG Mobo, 2GB ddr2, wd raptor, etc) is already 3 years old, and it's past its lifetime (for me).

From my experience, the parts you should invest on to have significant speed in photography softwares are:

SSD (Solid State Drive)
- all read and write occurs in your drive, so an SSD as your O/S drive is good.

Processor
- I advice those Intel Core i7 (either the 1156 or 1366 sockets) since they get faster once they only process single or double threads.

Memory
- DDR3 are the new fast memories nowadays. Just make sure to get those speed of at least 1600 and latencies of at least 7/8.

But for me, prioritize the memory and SSD, these really make a big difference in real world performance.

And btw, if ever the Dell Ultrasharp U2711 become locally available or I can ship it, I will get it immediately. http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/products/Displays/productdetail.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=dhs&cs=19&sku=224-8284 (http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/products/Displays/productdetail.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=dhs&cs=19&sku=224-8284)
