Title: Canon MP-E 65mm to Sony A7RII
Post by: retret66 on May 03, 2016, 07:52:57 AM
I decided to sell my Sony 90mm OSS macro since the only purpose of this lens was 90% macro use and occasional portrait/closeup. After getting the Sony 2470GM I find no need for portrait since the GM is a capable lens for portrait as well. Once sold I will replace it with Canon MP-E 65mm and use fotodiox adapter.. Does anyone here use Canon MP-E? I already have a focus rail since the MP-E has no focus ring..

;D oo, the only lens in the world to 5x macro.. saka possible extreme macro to 10x pag may extender saka tubes.. Pero anything above 2x or 3x might need a flash..

by next week, busy pa sa work saka katatapos lng ng winter, wala pa masyadong insects  ;D.. At least di ko na pala kelangan ang specialized flash, pero may binili akong reflector na medyo malaki sa built in kaso sa UK lng meron.. diffuseIt ang brand..

I am not so familiar with Canon MP-E 65mm. What is the actual working distance of this lens? This maybe hard to use in the field but much better in a controlled environment like captured insects in hibernation or totally dead /preserved ones.

@Fujiko (Norman) ...you can try without spending that much to about 4:1. I have not tried this set up but I saw my friend's pics.

Nikon E 28mm ais MF on PK-13 extension tube using the Nikon reversing ring like the br2a or similar ( you may try the modern extension tube, the PK-13 is about 27.5mm) then mount the tube on you Nikon camera.

You may also look for vintage bellows then mount a 50mm reverse using coupler. That will give you maybe more than 5x....disclaimer: I have not tried it but try to search he net for some samples. Bellows when not converted may safely mount on non motorized Nikon bodies d5500 and below. You can find a dated models very cheap these days....but if you wish get the Nikon DF. It can accept all lenses from the very beginning.

Well, the advantage of the Canon MP-E 65 is a no fuss set up. That means you can get great images without the tedious ceremonies. Buy a lowly canon bodies plus this one and a macro flash..then you will enjoy to no end....or any Mirrorless cam plus a canon lens to body adapter. You don't need to buy a very expensive body for this purpose.

Of course it will not beat up the MP-e65mm....you get what you paid for.

I had the Nanoha X5, (see my signature).. Nanoha is not for live objects.. The maximum focus distance @ 5x is less than 1 inch.. @ 4x, it is much worse., It is also not as sharp so you have to do at post...Nanoha has an aperture ring and a built in LED lights. The only usable photo I did on this are dead insects and snowflakes.. I am giving this to my brother....

MP-E 65mm can be used on live insects up to 5x with flash, the maximum focus distance @5X is 4 inches.. and about 9inches @ 1X..I bought a focus rail and the fotodiox pro adapter to control aperture via camera..

hobby lng sir  ;D .. Dinagdagan ko pa ng canon 1.4x TC to get 7x for extreme dead and still extreme macro..will post samples soon.. Pwede daw 2x TC to get 10x, canon not officially supporting it pero nag wowork.. kaso sa 10x minsan kasi masyado na mahaba ang lens.. My focus rail arrived and this one has no wiggle at all much better on my old manfrotto, the adjustment knob is very smooth.. Marami sa web nagsasabi na dark na daw masyado sa viewscreen ang 5x, I think this is why mirrorless has the advantage.. @ ISO3200 I can see and focus fine even when the room is dim..So sa 10X sabi nila dark na daw masyado, maybe for DSLR?

Is that spider alive?

I am curious how the eyes of jumping spiders will look like on high magnification.

;D Yes the spider is alive... He is in the wild now.. Believe it or not, I cannot find a single insect yesterday except this one.. Malamig pa kasi sa labas..Kinunan ko rin kunti ng video before ko pinakawalan. Tinulak ko pa sa pwet para mag move  ;D

Nilagay ko sya sa freezer for 10min, then take as many photo before he moves..

Di ko nasubukan mag freeze...baka kasi mamatay!!! Anyway, anong lighting mo sa video. Can you adapt a ring flash at the tip of the MP E 65mm?

Hirap makahanap ng jumping spiders pero i plan to get a small aquarium once I see one.. I manage to get 3-5x handheld with about 30% hit rate..I will try with a teleconverter to 7X and see if I can hit something handheld..

Regular reflector barely work when the lens is fully extended so I am going to use the canon MT-24EX flash.. Fully extended only has 1.5 inches focus distance.. I use aluminum foil and tied it to my hot shoe flash to get that close...  ;D

;D Ok Finally got to put it all together, my mean extreme macro machine.. Will test how it performs in nature.. DIY diffuser using one of the filter case with double sided tape on each end..Wont add much to the bulkiness of the flash..The Kirk FR-2 is solid and no wiggle at all, one full knob rotation=1mm lens travel..
