Title: selling or keeping tokina 11-16 2.8
Post by: enzo on April 02, 2015, 09:18:41 AM
i have a tokina 11-16 ver 1, for dx ultrawide, and recently my d7k got an error shutter, i may have to spends close to 7k for repair, (not sure how many shutter it would last after the repair) and since my only dx cam is d7k, should i sell the lens, and maybe get a fx alternative that doesn't cost a lot? thinking of the tokina 17-35 F4 fx (22k) or a tokina 16-28 fx 2.8.  as much as i wanted i love the 11-16 really sharp and doesnt weight that much.  For my fx cam, got a d3, d700, d610 and d750.

hahaha 20mm hmm planning to get one, since i saw the youtube video.
If i have d7k fixed  cost 7k  and still got a 11-16 for uw shots
sell 11-16 around 13-15k + add 10-8k for the tokina 16-35 F4.
sayang din naman yung d7k, well just use it for few macro and few uw shots. isip2x

the tokina 16-28 F2.8 might be good alternative but would cost close to 40k, but still half the cost of 14-24 nikon

i guess sayang yung d7k ko, even it needs a repair (shutter error oi think), my only dx lens is the tokina 11-16 and sigma 30mm, which i plan to sell.

Move on....the d7K was a great camera though. I still have mine and if you want to sell the tokina give it to me  he he he he and I will not sell my d7K anymore....confusing huh!!!

BTW, try using the tokina 11-16 @ 16mm in your FX cam.

yes ive mounted tokina and shot at 16mm, ok din, its like a 24mm prime, still really sharp. but since i already got a 24-70 and 24mm prime. it would be redundant, but haven't compare the IQ of the tokina to the sigma 24mm.

It won't be redundant it is 16mm not 24mm and the difference is huge.We are talking about FX here not DX. Yes you are missing something. The FL of the lenses does not change, only the POV.

but the 16mm (11-16) dx on a fx cam well act like a 24mm, except with lower megapixel unlike a real 24mm fx cam. or i miss something?

No regardless the 16mm of 11-16 on FX cam on FX mode is 16mm. Try it!! Shooting a DX lens on FX cam on FX mode.

Yes you are missing something...I forgot the thread's name that we been discussing. The FL of lenses do not change regardless of the format ,only the POV.

Yes jigs, kaso lang walang AF baka mabitin sya sa wedding shoot out. Sa landscape, you have all the time. At the same time hirap magcorrect ng moustache distortion. Alam mo paano? Gusto ko rin sana ng Samyang 14mm.

yes Jonnel26, tried that lens before, really sharp. but can't justify for now getting one, plus its heavy mount on a d3s a and on a d750 seems front heavy. as for now i try my new 16mm prime =)

Of course it is. For hardcore landscapers, it is all worth it. You also need to get the filter adaptor system and filters to fit it. That will add to the cost and the bulk not to mention being tedious. It is not ideal for backpackers and oldies like me. I prefer the smaller and cheaper 18-35G @ f8 it is good enough for me. I have the 16-35VR but I still find it bulky. In the long run I will just shift to mFT or Fuji and get the 10-24 or 14mm. It will be lighter and cheaper.

Nope, sir Retina. Not familiar with the moustache distortion. First time I've heard about it. Anyways, I thought the UWA would be for landscapes and wide angle environmental portraits. Anyways, I think enzo found a gem in his 16mm 2.8 prime :)

You can use it for landscape and if you are careful the distortion will not be prominent. The moustache malady is very obvious in architectural shots. There are times that you can't avoid shooting landscape with architecture so that made me hesitant to get one. Good luck to enzo and hope he will find his new "prime" satisfactory.

There is just one problem. You may not find it that sharp but it really depends if you are pixel peepers or OC....

Eventually you may buy a real UWA. I sold my 11-16 years ago so I don't have samples to show. As mentioned by @jigs10orio , the Samyang is a very reasonable and cheaper alternative.
