A D600 in a smaller sensor.. hmmm.. If the price tag is more than 40k i'd rather choose D600 over D7100.

Bakit MC,bibili ka na naman?Kung replacement ng d300s at d7000 combined ang d7100,baka 51 focus points, 11 fps or more and many more. I hope Nikon will not give us a lame update. Sana di mangyari yong dust plus asymmetric focus in one body. Granting the rumor is true, I won't run and buy it kahit gano pa sya ka ganda. Mahirap na.

if my predictions are true ( :) ), its been 4 months na wala pa ding remedy/announcement for Nikon regarding dust/oil problem ng D600, and i think wala pa din sa d7000, so if this month to lalabas, high chance me same issue din to.. hopefully im wrong.. :P

I totally agree with you. 51 focus point, 11 fps, built in wifi, 24mp, new processor feeling ko hindi enough reason to upgrade. Unless they make it cheap though i highly doubt that.

If there isn't really a significant improvement of image quality, not really worth it to upgrade especially with the bigger files and upgrade cost.
Title: Re: The new Nikon d7100.
Post by: darkside85 on February 18, 2013, 11:39:42 AM
IQ was never an issue with the D7000. its AF system was the one with significant concern. if they are able to incorporate the trusted 51 pt AF system of the D300/s, then i think that would be more than enough for an upgrade.
Title: Re: The new Nikon d7100.
Post by: rubber duckie on February 18, 2013, 03:11:13 PM
agree ako kay darkside! madalas talagang nakakainis ang focusing d7000 lalo na kung well lighted ang background.. 1 out of 3 shots mintis ang focus.. lalo na kung malayo ang subject mga around 8 meters and up..
Title: Re: The new Nikon d7100.
Post by: bryanvcpalacio on February 18, 2013, 08:05:16 PM
if this will incorporate the 51pt AF of the top end DX then goodbye D400 na talaga, hoping that once a batt grip is used, the speed will increase kahit pa 12mp nalang ;D the other good thing about this is the D600 price is dropping significantly w/c most likely make nikon sell the D7100 a lot cheaper than usual.

Anyway, may d7100 na lalabas o wala just enjoy your temperamental d7000.When the dust issues of the d600 settles down, we will grab that one maybe at much much lower prices. I still hope for the d7100 with  a pro AF module of the d300/s.I will grab that over the d600.....

Wireless sharing and control
Compatible with the WU-1a Wireless Mobile Adapter.

the web, send by email or text—share them however you like. With Nikon’s free Wireless Mobile Utility installed on
your smartphone or tablet (available for both Android and iOS), you can also remotely control the D7100. Use your
phone or tablet as a Live View monitor to take shots without having the camera in your hands, a huge advantage for
everything from self portraits to digiscoping with a Nikon fieldscope.

Create movies that amaze
Dazzling 1080p videos, slow-motion and time-lapse sequences.
With full-time autofocus and manual exposure control during video recording, a built-in stereo mic and an external
stereo mic jack, headphone and HDMI jacks, the D7100 achieves exceptional cinematic reproduction and quality.
Record in several high-definition formats: 1080p at 60i/50i/30/25/24 fps or 720p at up to 60p for ultra-smooth
slow-motion sequences. Dual SD card slots give you additional recording time, and an all new 60i function enables
smooth playback on HDTVs or external monitors. And, of course, every shot looks great through a NIKKOR lens.
Create beautiful background blur with the AF-S DX NIKKOR 35mm f/1.8G, or use the AF-S DX NIKKOR 10-24mm
for an ultra-wide-angle view that’s perfect for establishing shots and working in tight interiors.

Creativity on demand
The D7100 will inspire your creativity to new heights.
Built-in HDR (High Dynamic Range) combines shots taken simultaneously at different exposures into one beautifully
rich, high-contrast image. Picture Control gives you instant access to the color characteristics of your images, and
spot White Balance control for Live View shooting makes setting the white balance as easy as pointing to the area
in the frame that should be white. You can even apply artistic Image Effects to both stills and videos in real-time.
High-end design

The D7100 has the comfortable handling and durability of a high-end Nikon camera.
Durable magnesium alloy with moisture and dust resistance protects the camera’s internal parts from the elements.
A new 3.2-inch ultra-high-resolution 1,229K-dot LCD monitor provides crisp image playback, menu adjustments
and Live View shooting, and a new viewfinder with a low-power consumption OLED display element for bright,
high contrast data readout and provides approx. 100% frame coverage.

I certainly hope there's an increase in speed when a grip is attached. the new LCD is sweet if its true, the rest of the specs are what's expected. is that the same metering module as the D600 and D7000?

Like a mini d800E ;D :D...Since this is just the first quarter , there is a possibility that new DX lenses will be released like the 16-35DX f2.8 and the 16-85DX f4. We can't rule out the possibility that the d400 will finally be released this year to compete with the 7D 2.
Shall we run and buy one? Not me. I will wait until the middle or the end of this year. Nakakadala ang Nikon.
If the specs are true, Nikon has still the same set of mind. No built in GPS and Wifi, so they can milk more money from us. It is not important to me but could have been fun to play with.
The video specs looks similar to the d5200 so there is a possibility that this has the toshiba made sensors too. Video might be better implemented on this one. My guess  on pricing is about 1500 US dollars or else........ otherwise at 2000 USD and above, very few will buy it. People will rather get the d7000 which is a bargain these days.IMHO

What? 1.3DX crop!!!Is this camera a new bred?

additional daw Doc. magiging 2x crop.

1.3x Crop Mode - Sports photographers take note: Building upon the telephoto benefits of the DX-format, the D7100 has the unique ability to shoot in a 1.3x DX crop mode for both stills and HD video. While in this innovative mode, shooters will gain an extra telephoto boost (2X), and a boost in burst speed to seven fps, with 15.4- megapixel resolution. Additionally, while in this mode, the 51-point AF array covers more of the frame, allowing improved subject acquisition and tracking performance through the viewfinder.

Title: Re: The new Nikon d7100.
Post by: keeper on February 21, 2013, 12:46:00 PM
im happy because of these two features

New 51-Point AF System - The D7100 features Nikon's professionally proven and lightning-fast 51-point AF system, with a new Multi-CAM 3500DX AF module. Additionally, the AF system and exposure are augmented with Nikon's 3D Color Matrix Metering II 2,016 pixel RGB sensor and Scene Recognition System, which recognizes the scene prior to shooting in order to adjust AF, AE, AWB and other parameters. The results of this system are accurate and even exposures, sharp details and vivid color, frame after frame. For additional precision, 15 of the 51 AF points are cross-type, and the center point is functional at f/8, giving DX photographers an additional telephoto advantage when using a teleconverter

Durable Construction - Built to perform in a wide variety of conditions, the D7100 is built to the same moisture and dust resistance specifications of the venerable Nikon D300S. For durability, the top and rear covers are constructed of magnesium alloy, while internally, the shutter has been tested to withstand 150,000 cycles. Despite its robust construction, the camera remains lightweight, weighing in at approximately 1.5 pounds (body).

That means my 16mm will have an POV of 20mm...if new DX lenses will be announced medyo gugulo ang road map ng upgrading ko sa FF. Di ba Canon has similar thing before? I hope this will be more friendly to adapted MF lenses.

More like 32mm, the FX crop factor would be 2x (1.5*1.3)

I think I misunderstood that 1.3x crop mode. It is crop over a crop in LV...akala ko pa naman talagang katulad sa Canon...he he he he.....pero hindi ko pa makuha masyado. Basahin ko na lang sa DP review...sorry guys for the wrong info.

Naku another shaker!

Ang gusto ko dito, is the new 51 AF-point system. Yung hinahanap ko dati pa, which made consider "downgrading" to a D300 just for that AF points.

Another thing is...the 60fps at 720p. Slow motion!!!

Haay...GAS mode on again!

After reading the release information, main differences compared to the D7000 are the 24mp sensor (probably the Toshiba made one that's in the D5200) that doesn't have an AA filter and an  upgraded AF module. It seems like a moderate update. I think I might stick with my D7000 right now until there's no more problems with the dust oil issue on the D600.  Hopefully, though, Nikon releases a couple more DX specific lenses like a 56mm f1.8 or a 24mm f1.8. There's a rather large lens deficiency for APS-C lenses in both Canon and Nikon APS-C camera systems.

I've a feeling though that there's not going to be a D400 anymore. Nikon might just prefer for D300/300s users to make the jump to a D600/D800/D4 instead.

sana di ito ang sinasabi na nilang "D400", if it is then Nikon would loose bigtime sa market share against Canon. this is more or less just a direct competitor to Canon's old semi pro line, 50D/60D and the upcoming 70D. i certainly hope they're not considering this to go up against the rumored update to the 7D line. if it is then, the Canon folks would already be smiling by now

They may have something else in mind. The product development will change gear towards FF at the high end level and mirrorless in the entry level. This might be even the start of the DSLR demise... might be the last of the mojicans IMHO.

Baka ganyan nga gawin sa D400? Parang D600, pero merge with D300s...but cropped? Speculating lang. sorry for out of topic!

Para balik sa topic...

I actually wished for that 51 AF-point sa D7000. 6fps is already fine by my style of shooting. So as much as I'd like to replace my D7k with a D71k, siguro either d600 or another new model.

In mirrorless format...still dreaming!!! But after a period of gassing, I just can't give up my d7000. I had it during the BI state at a very expensive proposition. T'was the time when everyone wants the d7000.It was in short supplies and sellers have a windfall. Darn, I was not able to hold on.I gave in. You're not the only one. I think I was constantly hitting the refresh button on Amazon.com's U.S. website to see if they had new ones in stock during the same time period.  I'm not too sure I can sell mine especially after this D7100 release is going to wreck the resale value of my D7000. I think I might just hold mine for backup even if I do eventually pick up a D600/800.

For mirrorless thing, it's not just a pipe dream. If Samsung or Sony pops out a FF mirrorless camera that sells well, it might just get Canon or Nikon to create a competing camera.

agree ako kay darkside! madalas talagang nakakainis ang focusing d7000 lalo na kung well lighted ang background.. 1 out of 3 shots mintis ang focus.. lalo na kung malayo ang subject mga around 8 meters and up..

Matagal ko na naririnig to. I had some issues with the AF but after the in-camera calibration, the D7000 churns out sharp images.

Nikon has pulled out all the stops on this DX unit. Quality control na lang paguusapan. Feature wise panalong panalo. Cannot wait to see sample pictures and videos taken with this camera. A very worthy upgrade for the D7000/D300S. DX and even FX users like myself are excited about.

question:  is this the same AF system found in the D300/D300S?  i checked the specs...51 point AF, 15-points are cross-type but all clustered in the center?

will still stick with my d7k...although I like the below specs

1.3x crop mode...effective 2x mode on 35mm format...this turns your 70-200 f2.8 into a yummy 140-400f2.8
spot white balance...very handy

Wala na akong DX lenses...pero I am looking for a second body.Kaya nasa 3rd priority of purchase na lang to. The potential of having some gremlins on this one is a big possibility kasi made in thailand to. Yong d7k na ginawa before flooding OK naman, after the flood doon nagumpisa. Yong d5200 mukhang OK na at walang contaminants. This is really an attractive camera para sa wala pang d7k.

If we compare the d700 vs d7100 (assuming that the d7100 has same sensor as the d5200), the only advantages of the d700 are better ergonomics control, thinner DOF, the normal POV of lenses and maybe since it has a bigger motor, it can drive the AF-D lenses faster. The rest like price point,DR, tonality, resolution, sharpness, etc(too technical for me to express) are to the d7100 favors.I fact a lot are on the d7100' side. Those I am just presuming but you can correct me for the sake of everyone. Will those advantages of d7100 can translate to a better IQs We will see in the future. When I read M Peterson's review, I was thinking na binayaran lang sya. Pero I am too judgmental at this point. Perhaps he is telling the truth that you need to handle the d7100 before passing on the verdict.
Regarding plans of going FX from DX,  that can wait for now.
@Dennis as always, Nikon shake our GAS soul every time a cam is being release. Let us just be reasonable to what we can afford and need. Gone are the days wherein we virtually run and pick Nikon's offering. Reasons may reign among Nikonians here. Nikon taught as a lesson or 2. Don't buy right away!!! Wait. Let the people in DPreview and somewhere else do the testing for us.

It looks like it. If you read the Nikon press release, they have this statement in there that the D7100 is the "DX-format Flagship." This essentially means there might not be a D400.

However, we really can't be sure. Canon will release 70D to compete with the d71000. Will Canon release the 7d2 too?Maybe yes may be not... Some conversation here:

The pre-order price tag of the MB-D15 is at Eur 279,00 (+/- PhP 15,000.00).  It will probably be pegged at the PhP 17-19,000.00 range.

Perfectly understandable in the light that Nikon wants to sell this new camera model.  Would you do anything less if you were in that position?  When the D400 will come out, expect Nikon to say the same in an ever more enthusiastic way.

D7100 specs are very good. Especially the weather-sealing, 51AF points and bigger LCD screen na wala sa D7000.

very tempting but i will not give in, I'll wait for the D400. I think this will be my ultimate camera. I'm more of a DX shooter, I really like the crop factor. parang may libreng teleconverter e.  :D

Pero D7100 is still a good second body sa D600....

kung medyo mahina ang supply ng gas and you just bought a d7000, just stick to it. it is a very capable camera. kung hindi pa nakakabili and planning to consider this, ang tanong ngayon ay kung magkano ito? ;D
for the current price of d7000, malamang malaki laki pa idadagdag. at matagal tagal pa hihintayin not just for the price to normalize but also the reviews and how well it performs. kasi parang too soon pa bumili na kalalabas lang..di pa sure how well it performs or kung meron bang issues..

the specs of the D7100 do seem to allow for a D400 to be released.  one thing i noticed with the spec sheet is the buffer size.  it says the buffer is good for 6 lossless compress 14-bit raw files or 33 large fine jpeg files.

Issues? so far wala pa. If your patient enough, try to wait for other reviews and field testing, focus, speed and other related test specifically for D7100.

I suggest go for the D7100 + 35mm 1.8G. other lens? darating din sayo yun need at para sayo depending sa genre or usage mo. IHMO

Thanks! May nakita po akong site about a unit of D7100 having some dust issue after approx 1000 shots. http://betterfamilyphotos.blogspot.com/2013/03/does-nikon-d7100-have-dust-spots.html (http://betterfamilyphotos.blogspot.com/2013/03/does-nikon-d7100-have-dust-spots.html)   Pero sana incidental lang siya at wala sa ibang units.

D7100 is a DX so the sensor is the same as other DX bodies.  The 1.3x crop is an option to choose a smaller image area so cropping after post is not necessary.  The smaller image area means that the 51-point AFs will be even more concentrated.  Choosing the 1.3x crop will also boost continuous shooting from 6fps to 7fps.

mas pinili ko to kesa D600 dahil sa AF SPeed kasi more on kids party ko...
so mas ok saken an mabilis na AF.. sa ISO naman di rin sya papahuli...

I think that will be fixed in later release ng batteries.Di naman aamin ang Nikon eh.

Yong d7k mayproblem sa umpisa yong mga hot pixels na na fix then after few weeks lang. IMHO ang d7.1K is a lot better sa d7K pero the d7.1K may never surpass the d7K phenomenon. Technology is moving forward and it gets cheaper. Early users of the d7.1k confirmed that the AF module of the camera is as good as the d800 and the d4 and they suspect that it is maybe similar. Kaya I will pick up one of these when the time is right, I mean when the wallet is just right.

Mahal kasi ng binayad ko sa d7k eh. Babawiin ko na lang sa d7.1k. Ang bilis talaga ng panahon, more than 2 years na pala ang nakalipas.

Ako rin, doc.  Just waiting for the right time before getting this.  FX can probably wait.  BTW, the battery is not the same with the D7000, it's the same battery as for the D800.

battery life nya parang mahina compare sa D90..
365 shots ako... down to 20% na battery ko
IMHO

share ko lang din po yun battery life nun akin which is D7K. On AF Assist and Check image after shots, around 350 shots my battery life reduce almost 30% na. completely drained na sya around 1.1k shots.

done shooting in a whole at Disney HK. pero sa normal day shoot like landscape event, just like i did last saturday with PIPHO, i observed that depending din on the features of the body that i'm using, mostly AF assist lan not that really good cause i have sight problem kaya need some assist and consistently checking on the image that I shot.

Slight OT.. Where do you buy EN-EL15s online?

IMO, it's not the battery that's faulty. I have both the D800 and the D7000. On the D800, I need 2 batteries instead of just 1 for the D7000. Maybe it's because of the higher megapixel count. My guess is the camera's sensor, processor and display needed to work harder.

tsk tsk...wrong move..i shouldn't have went to this thread!! mga BI!! worst mga ex-D7000 owners pa ata yung mga nandito! ha ha...pero si Sir Pitbull parang wala pa ata? Or did he change course?

Honestly, when D7100 specs came out, i wasn't really impressed that much. Also, feeling ko higher MP, more focus points and about the same ISO performance or a little better. So I wasn't really as excited like when i upgraded from D90 to my D7000. Naalala ko pa out of stock everywhere ang D7000, tsambahan pa to get it. Anyway, been looking around and so far so good reviews are looking great for D7100. Since i decided to stay DX muna (waiting for the D600 price to go down as well, and D800 is out of reach) Now i'm on the fence :(

mga D7100 users, malaki ba talaga diff image quality wise compared to D7000? the 24mp and no OLPF? is D7100 a mini D800E?? the AF for sure is a big improvement. gusto ko din yung lock sa mode dial and the 100% magnification by just pressing Ok button for image reviewing. Interested din ako sa 1.3X factor on my new 70-200VR2 :)...haaayy.!!

To all happy D7100 owners, makikisuyo lang po :)  I wanted to know if the hyper sych speed (Auto FP) still works on the D7100 before i start sending my D7000 for trade in :) Still on the fence pero we'll see. I have no reason to believe it won't but since it's a new cam baka meron funtionality na nagbago (ie. Auto ISO behavior with flash from D90 to D7000 was different)

So, if i remember correctly, set flash synch speed to 1/320s FP, then dial a shutter speed higher than 1/320 say 1/8000th he he! take a pic with a flash and make sure walang black strips on the image.

Thanks in advance po!

I just got off the phone with Sigma America who has my 17-70mm lens for the 1 minute image review issue as well as the zoom/scroll issue.   They have been in contact with Sigma Japan.   They realize there is a problem with the D7100 protocol, the optical stabilization and the hyper-sonic wave motor which are all in contention.

The bad news, there is NO fix for this problem, nor will one be issued.   It's just an issue we have to deal with.  The problem should not harm the camera.

This does not effect the Sigma 17-70mm contemporary lens.

quick question to the users..

when using the additional 1.3x crop mode, the image area available is indicated by a rectangular frame when viewed in the VF. on a D700 , if u choose DX image area and set custom setting A6(AF Point Illumination) to OFF, the area not covered by the DX frame turns gray (no longer transparent). applying the A6 setting on a D7100, will it also give the same result (image area not covered by 1.3X crop turns gray)?

no gray out the area outside of the crop in the viewfinder.

thanks for that info sir Tams. minsan kasi ginagmait ko yung DX mode ng D700, mas madali i.compose using the A6 setting. was thinking na baka pwede din yun sa D7100 @ 1.3x crop mode..  :D

Hi guys, i'm thinking of buying the d7100 and pairing it with a Sigma 50mm 1.4,  but i'm torn with the other combination which is d7000 paired with a Sigma 85mm 1.4.

What do you think is better?  based on henry's prices, each camera/lens pair is roughly 71k which is exactly what my budget is. i have used both sigma and prefer the 85mm but with the improvements of the d7100 over d7000, i can't decide. d7100 + 85mm would be way over my budget :P

Care to share sir why you choose the d7k/Sigma 85mm combo?  Is it because of the lens? thanks! btw, most of the time i take pictures in low-light situations
Title: Re: The new Nikon d7100.
Post by: enshong on May 28, 2013, 04:01:06 PM
What kind of low-light situations?

To me, the answer to your question would lie on what you shoot and which focal length suits it best.

If I was going to make a choice and this would be my first kit and my major concern is low-light usability, I would go for the D7100 and the 50mm. It's AF is better in low-light, the sensor should be cleaner especially if you output them in lower resolutions, and a 50mm would be easier to handhold. The 85mm feels like so long in DX so you'll need faster shutter speeds and very good technique. It's very nice for portraits though.
Title: Re: The new Nikon d7100.
Post by: athaneum on May 28, 2013, 04:13:01 PM
Usually inside a room with ambient light. or better yet, think of a bar with dim lights or liking taking a walk in the park at night with not that many street lights. the focal length is not a problem as i have tried both and liked both of them.

i'll be using it primarily for taking portraits. And i agree, the 85mm is good in taking portraits and i prefer that more than the 50mm but any would do just great for me.  Just wondering what body to pair it with.  :)

thanks!
Title: Re: The new Nikon d7100.
Post by: enshong on May 28, 2013, 04:23:22 PM
If portraits are really what you're after, then the 85 would be good. You'll be using DX though so the 50 will also be good for portraits. Your other criteria though is low-light so between these two lenses and I assume in the absence of a flash, a 50 will let you shoot at lower shutter speeds than the 85. Not to mention, you'll have more leeway in positioning yourself inside a room with the 50 because the 85 with a DX body might be too tight unless you're shooting in a large room. :)

D7000 + 50 1.8G + 85 1.8G na lang. Best of both worlds. The 1.8G Nikkors are sharp wide open and the difference between 1.4 and 1.8 isn't that big. Bokeh can certainly be smoother with the Sigma 85 1.4 but there's more to bokeh than the max aperture and there's more to portraits than creamy bokeh. :)
Title: Re: The new Nikon d7100.
Post by: athaneum on May 28, 2013, 04:49:50 PM
Nope, if i can't get any sigma when i buy the camera, i will definitely buy it before the year ends just to satisfy my itch. i understand what you're saying with there's more to bokeh than the max aperture, etc. but my decision is fixed on only those two. otherwise, i'd be burning more money than i initially intended.  besides i've used the two sigmas and the nikkors you suggested and i still liked the sigma over them :) it's just my preference.

anyhow, thanks for your input on the d7100+50mm. i'll be considering that. and you're right, no flash as one of the main subject will be my newly-born baby. :P

Pagmay airflow may dust. Wala masyadong dust.

And take note puro indoor shots lang. Ibabalik ko sana sa henry's kaso more than 100 na ang shutter count at hindi na covered ng 7-day replacement.

fibre is everywhere, hindi matatakasan yan kahit anong gawin :o :o :o

Modifications enabled with C firmware Ver. 1.01

When images captured using a flash in "Manual" or "Repeating" flash flash mode were played back with the “Overview” display enabled, flash output level was displayed in the flash compensation portion of the display. This issue has been resolved.
When the "AE/AF lock" button was pressed with "Special Effects" mode enabled, "Selective Color" selected, and the view magnified with selective color options displayed in live view, the image did not change while live view was active. This issue has been resolved.
An issue that caused the "Viewfinder Virtual Horizon" to freeze when certain operations were performed has been resolved.
When images captured with white balance bracketing enabled were played back, a white balance fine-tuning value of 9 (steps) was displayed even for images captured with a fine-tuning value of 10 (steps) applied. This issue has been resolved.
An issue that prevented cursor movement when certain operations were performed in calendar playback mode has been resolved.
The size of some text displayed in calendar playback mode has been modified.
Display of focal lengths in 35mm [135] format recorded in image Exif data has been corrected.
With movie recording at "1920 × 1080/24p" in "M" exposure mode, subject brightness did not change, even when shutter speed was adjusted. This issue has been resolved.

mga sir ask ko lang malaki ba ang difference ng d7100 sa d7000 in terms of dynamic range and colors?  ;)

Added Info.  D7000 sensor is made by Sony.  D7100 sensor is made by Toshiba.  Some users have noticed banding in their images shot with the D7100 that do not happen when using the D7000.  Banding happens even when at ISO 100 using RAW 14-bit lossless compressed.  banding becomes noticeable when lifting details from the shadow.  This is not an issue with the D7000 RAW files which is excellent and is surpassed only by the D600 and D800.

Congrats!!! Welcome back. Yong d200 para sa akin ay the best pa rin at base ISO....in a very good light ang ganda ng skon tone ng CCD sensor. Well the d7000/d7100 is also great at base ISO. Make a conscious effort of shooting it at that lowest iso. You will be surprise how good it is.

Correct Doc, still loving my Jurassic D200! Playing with 100-400 ISO so the cam would better perform. Now what I plan to do is get a 35mm 1.8 and slap it with the D200 while my 85mm 1.8 on the D7100 and I'm a happy shooter. :D
