Title: Tamrac or Lowepro Bags.... which one is better?
Post by: redtangent on February 19, 2006, 12:12:51 AM
In general ha.. which do you think is better in terms of build quality, ease of use, styling, over all comprehensive system (mga pouches, attachments etc...)

hindi na kasya pag naka mount yung lense sa body bossing.. sa cathay photo, singapore po binili at nasa s$80 (2700 pesos)
yung una kong slingshot200 defective sya at buti nalang after a month pinalitan naman nila ng bago.  ;D

ano sira nung original mo na slingshot? defective?

i went to infomaxx kanina sa megamall.. grabe ang presyo nito dito satin... 6500!!! grabe na yan hehehe well may pwesto sila pero still hehe.

Lowepro din for me. I like there simple and clean bag designs. :)

sir Jo3pit

if you can can you post a pic of how you arranged the dividers sana with your cam inside (hopefully may P&S ka to do this).. kasi diba ang openning nito e galing sa side para pag naka slide sa harap mo yung bag e madaling buksan...nung nilagay ko yung cam ala toploader, walang umiipit dun sa sides nung camera na divider.. so yung lens lang ang may naka palibot na divider... hindi snug bandang taas e.

clean nga ang design ng lowepro... yung tamrac medyo... kakaiba hehehe..

any tamrac lovers?

sige post ko tom.  nightshift kase ako ngayon  :)

kasya yung 2 body sa slingshot. (d200 with 10-20mm & d70 with kit lense)

ok so you dont put extra lenses dun sa slingshot mo... two bodies kaya mukang snug...
sabagay i can put the body in one side and all the lenses sa other side no.. para di umaalog compared sa orig config nya na yung body ang asa gitna.
san kaya mura tong slingshot?

yung crumpler mo sir san mo nabili.
Title: Re: Tamrac or Lowepro Bags.... which one is better?
Post by: redtangent on February 22, 2006, 08:52:44 AM
sir,

eto yung sinasabi kong space sa original config ng Slingshot...

pag isa lang cam mo... and you have 3 lenses and a flash... sakto na yung orig na config e.

pero may space like this:

di ko pa kasi nalalaro tong slingshot so di ko alam how to configure the pads inside... maybe you can show me how kung isang cam lang ang gamit pero wala tong space para di aalog alog.

tnx so much

what are your lenses?

here's what I can put in my ss200

350d with grip, 28-105 attached
18-55 mm
50 mm
70-200 2.8
sunpak flash

here what I do,

on the left side (red circle) I put the 70-200 with tripod mount and hood reversed. so the entire area is taken up by the lens. sa middle yung camera. the 50 and 18-55 takes the spaces at the right... di naman umaalog :)

yung padding nilagay ko sa ilalim ng 70-200 for additional padding lang... you have lots more space sa triangular compartment sa taas ng bag, may front pocket pa... :)

got it for 2800 sa Cathay sa Singapore... pinabili ko lang :)

meron din akong velocity 7 haven't tried putting a 70-200 2.8 in it, pero kasya ang 70-200 f4... mas gusto ko yung slingshot kasi I find it easier to get things out... I also find the lowepro more rigid... yung velo7 ko kasi parang malambot :)

hamak na masmura ang velo7... 2700 ata or something like that... if you want something bigger, get the velo9... but if you can source a bag from singapore, sobrang sulit yung slingshot 200 :)

if you're getting stuff from Cathay, just make sure na may stock sila... yung slingshot ko was the last one on their inventory... got it december, tapos early feb na ata sila nagkastock ulit... :)

I just e-mail Cathay in Singapore to make sure they have stocks and for a quote.
email@cathayphoto.com.sg
They still have the best prices for Lowepro gear, comparing them even to B&H and (gaaah!) Infomaxx. I prefer Lowepro because of their look & design, but I'm sure Tamrac has a pretty good system as well. It might just be a matter of preference and where you intend to buy the stuff.
Kata Bags look interesting, but aren't available locally.

yup! singapore based ako bossing. ang mahirap lang sa slingshot 200, eh palaging out of stock. at ang napakahaba pa ng reservation list nila.

I've used my Lowepro Mini Trekker for 6 years already. It has been with me through the roughest locations and has been protecting both my personal equipment and the company's (hehehe)... I also use the lowepro slim utility belt coupled with a film bag. i would stuff lots of other here lens cleaning kit, blower, filters.... ect. My only reason for choosing lowepro is cuz of the quality of their fabric...

(Post ko na rin ulit ito dito)...

Personally, I prefer top loading bags such as LowePro's Stealth Reporter 600AW and TopLoader 75AW. But what keeps those two bags at bay for me these days is LowePro's Trim Trekker. It's one of the few photo gear bags that offer two methods for strapping, either as a backpack or as a sling back (currently configured as the latter for quick access).

Aside from having provisions for carrying a tripod in the front, what I find really convenient is the slide drawer storage at the bottom (perfect fit to a 550EX, stoffen, off-shoe flash cable and slave flash) which is neatly separated from the top compartment where you can fit a cam body w/ grip and lens attached, also about 3-4 more lenses inside (only 3 if I lug along a 100-400mm IS). There's a large zippered pocket in the front where I keep a Lumiquest Omni Bounce, extra batteries, CF cards, filters, etc. Additionally, I've looped velcro straps on both sides of the bag to accommodate LowePro's lens case system for extra storage.

I'm not sure if Tamrac carries an equivalent to this bag, here's a pic...

This is a great thread..

I looked at the Slingshot this morning when I got an Optech Strap at infomax. It is sexy I must admit. Thanks to this thread I'm confident a 70-200 2.8 will fit.

Any chance that the Slighshot 200 will be cheaper sa Stronghold Industries in QC?

To contribute.. Here's a pic of my current bag, a Tamrac System 6

Not sure, but it will definitely be cheaper in Singapore. You can probably buy a couple of them in Singapore para masulit mo airfare mo ;D

Infomax price = P6500 * 2 = P13000

Cathay Photo = $100 * 2 + P4000 Tiger Air = P10000

My Slingshot fits a 350D with grip, 17-85 IS (on the camera), 430EX flash and case, and a 50/1.8. But I still have more than enough space for a 70-200 and an additional 580EX :)

70-200 on the right, 50/1.8 goes in front of the 17-85, 580EX on the left (this bag is DEEP!)

I'm a Lowepro & Tamrac user. I have a Tamrac Pro 12 which is ok naman kaso i'm not 100% happy kasi hindi na kasya yung gears ko. I'm getting a Lowepro Commercial AW soon. I have Lowepro Compputrekker, Toploader 75, Nova 1, Nova 3, and some other lowepro bags and gears such as lens pouches and P&S belts. Lowepro talaga is better than tamrac when it comes to durability and foamy din yung lowepro.

Inikot ko buong Metro Manila kanina in search for one and only Infomax has it (at P6,500.00)

Stronghand (the listed official dealer sa Pinas) also doesn't have it and curiously doesn't stock it.

The manager said he was getting lots of requests for it and will 'probably' try to order it. If you want  Stronghand to push through with it. I suggest those who do call 'em and ask for it maski walang stock para ma-realize nila na hinahanap talaga itong model na toh.

Looked at the thread quickly and didn't see any Tamrac fans so let me say that I received a Tamrac Model 602 as a gift about 20 years ago. Still going strong although the blue color is faded now but functionally perfect. I looked at the Lowepro bags in 1 store in Megamall Cyberzone and all I can say is that my 20-year old Tamrac appears have better build quality.

an alternative to the lowepro slingshot is the new models of tamrac, the adventure 6 (model 5546) & adventure 7 (model 5547).  from the pics alone, i would say it is still easier to access your cam using the lowepro slingshot.  called jtphoto & they said they don't have yet the 2 models here.

Yep. Inikot ko na buong Metro Manila last Sabado... wala talagang stock from Hidalgo (Henry's), Makati (JT carries Tamrac) and QC (Stronghand).

I did get a pleasant surprise that the owner of Infomax used to be an old competitor from Virra Mall days. Both of us ran Computer shops (him on the third floor, ako sa 2nd). Ang liit talaga ng Maynila. Even back then I used to get stocks of various computer peripherals from him.

As to the price, basta tumawad ka but I will say that it's no way near the known price na binebenta ni Sir nicolson sa Henry's. Mga 2 weeks pa daw order dadating sa Hidalgo.

I just loaded up all my gear and walked around the block with it. Good weight distribution compared to a shoulder bag. I think I can manage the long walk around correigedor.

But lemme get this straight... it's clunky compared to a shoulder bag. If it weren't for the walking, I'd rather carry the shoulder bag. Way much easier to work on and no need to lay down the bag on the ground to get at your gear.

Er... why lay down the bag? You can sling it out in front of you to access the side pocket of the bag and get your camera...

Nope... the lenses are arranged so that only the DSLR + the attached lens is easily reachable in the 'sling' position, if you open it all the way with it on your shoulder, there's a real risk of your lenses tumbling out.

Hmmm... I arranged my gear as seen below. Since the dividers grip the walls of the bag, they act as velcro covers. This way the lenses are facing downward (the lens mounts are facing me when I "open" the dividers). I can then put on the camera and pull out the lenses/flash as needed. :)

___________
|__  cam ___|
| L |  +   | L |
| e |lens | e |
| n |      | n |
| s |      | s |
-------------

The belt buckles also ensure that I don't open the zippers all the way.

As promised, here are some pics of my bag setup.
Pic of my bag without the cam (I'm using it with a kit lens to take the pic). Note how both "flaps" are closed. There's additional space in the middle compartment for a 50/1.8 (unseen)

Right flap is open, revealing my 17-85 with lens hood. May allowance pa; I believe your 70-200 could fit in here pa rin, albeit a bit tightly :) even if the flaps don't close, the lens won't be in danger of falling

Left flap open, revealing my flash (space for a second flash pa, which I intend to get one of these days :) ).

Velcro on the walls (to show how the flaps are secured). Removing them is tougher than you think; there's no way they can detach "accidentally".

Thanks! I was trying all sorts of combinations.

I was even able to fit the stormtrooper lens in there, but AKO naman ang bumigay he he he.

I was also a bit concerned because in all other backpack designs, the lenses are stacked end on end with the load squarely on the length of the lens body (mount-lens cap), not on the side as (on the focus/zoom rings). With 2.8 aperture lenses, I just wanna take more care because mabigat talaga ang 2.8 glass compared to lenses with maximum apertures of 3.5-4.0

I've decided to get a separate lens case for the 70-200 na lang para if my back starts to complain, I can opt to leave it (sa kotse), strap it to the side (of the 200aw) or have one of you na kasama sa Photo Ops to bring it for me (pero libre gamit ha ha ha).

Note to lowepro:

Since may kasama waterproof hood kung umulan, sana nilakihan ninyo para umabot sa ulo ng nagsusuot ng backpack or pwede maging impromptu reflector ha ha ha!

congrats on the bag dave! you won't regret it :)

for lens cases, I suggest you get the lc 4 for your stormtrooper, I use one for my non-IS :) the nice thing about it, you have another option to lug it around... meron siyang shoulder straps that you can put so that merong parang lunch box sa shoulder mo :)

however, I haven't had a problem getting access to my lenses, here's how I arrange my gear:

Don't worry about this... the weight is on the length of the lens body ONLY when you sling it forward to get stuff :D Once you zip it back up and wear it as a backpack again, the load moves back to the side. :D

You gotta love this bag :D

i just got a Lowepro Slingshot 200 AW last weekend. i am very happy with the bag. it is very spacious - i can fit my 350D with 70-200/4 (attached), 18-50/2.8, 50/1.8, 580EX, and some other small accessories (table-top tripod, blower, cleaning cloth, flash diffusers, etc.). what i like most about it is that the stuff are very organized inside the bag, and are easily accessible. it is also very comfortable to lug around; it feels like a real backpack.

my only gripe about it is that the sling / strap runs across your body from the right shoulder to the left side of your torso. i think it would be more comfortable if it was the other way around (from the left shoulder to the right side of the torso), just like the tamrac velocity series. i would like to minimize the load on my right shoulder espcecially when i shoot while carrying the bag. but, this is just a minor concern.

overall, i love the bag. i might seldom use my crumpler 6 million dollar again, and might dispose it because of this.

I just switched to a Tamrac Velocity 9  from my Lowepro Micro Trekker.    Based on my limited experience (Lowepro Nova Mini / Nova 3 / Micro Trekker and Tamrac V9),  I think Lowepro makes better bags in terms of construction and protection.  Thicker padding all around, dividers that keep their shape and dont move around, good padding on the straps, etc.

The only reason  I switched  was  my 350D  would be too big for the micro trekker with the battery grip on,  it would still close but the cam would bulge. :(

I got a good price on a used V9  so I gave it a try.   The tamrac feels less secure,  the padding is thin and the dividers move around  which means things can get jostled about in the bag.  The main closure is also not zippered,  it just closes with 3 buckles  unlike Lowepro which  has fully zippered flaps.   My biggest gripe about the Velocity 9  is how the weight  is not evenly distributed  since  its a sling  with only one strap across the left shoulder.

The V9, however, beats my old bags  in terms of quick access,  It works as advertized. ;D

At this time I have the following in my bag:  350D + BG-E3 + Sigma 20-70mm, Sigma 70-300mm, 18-55mm kit lens, 50mm 1.8, Sigma EF 500 flash, batteries, AA battery magazine, memory cards, digimate image bank, filters and a mini tripod.  (All of these fit in the Micro trekker too :))  There is still room for another small/medium lens.

Thanks :)

I'm a biassed Lowepro user but I used to have a Tamrac belt system. I sold it in favor of the Lowepro Deluxe Belt. Why?

When running around, the individual components moved a lot on the Tamrac. They slid from side to side especially long lenses on big lens cases. It became a hassle. I didn't like the idea that my belt's components were moving loosely when running from one place to another.

I don't know about stores in Hidalgo, but in Imagesmith(Pasig) Lowepro slingshot 100AW P2750 200AW P4500. Fastpack 100 P2895, 200 P3875. you can call them 636-5708 if they have available stocks, if none, stocks will surely arrive this coming May. Bought my Lowepro Flipside 400 from them last week. Can't go wrong with Lowepro. ;D

Newbie lang everyone, I'm using a Tamrac Velocity 5X, kasya yung following gears:

EOS 450D nakakabit yung 18-200 mm lens with lens hood attached, nakakabit din ang battery grip;

Nissin Di622 with Stofen diffuser na nakakabit;

50 mm f1.8 with lens hood attached;

USB connector, 2 batteries, blower, sigma pen, cleaning cloth, memory cards...

Di naman siya mukhang cramped, may room pa for another small lens.  :)

I'm happy with my Tamrac Adventure 4 Messenger bag. So far I have my D40 with kit lens and
a 55-200 VR lens. There's still room for a flash and a prime lens. Not only does it fit my gears
but also fits my budget.  ;D
