I am partial to Street Photography who takes pics on both a Day and Night setting. I need to know what is good for both Photography and Videography, for my Thesis. Ive saved up a lot of money for my Thesis, and your suggestions can be helpful.

If it would help, I have recently aquired a D7000 and use it with my ever reliable 35mm 1.8 but will also use my brothers D3100 to use as a secondary camera for when I take Video.

Your 35/1.8 DX on your D7K is the perfect combo for one lens street shooting in whatever light. Light easy carry w/ fast AF response, it's time for you to do more street shooting with your current set-up.

Yeah it is a very good combo. But ever since an event more than a Year ago, when i couldn't take shots in too close situations, especially with my 50mm 1.8 I decided that I needed to go Wider.

The need to do so only came now, that I am preparing to film my Thesis.

The Question is, what should I invest on, not only for my dSLR but my Nikon F4 Film SLR as well.

Money doesnt come easy, so I am trying to figure out what to invest on.

The 14-24mm 2.8 would give realy good wide shots on Video, and Photos. But will not do so good in Low Light as the 24mm 1.4 would. But both would come short if I need to take a closer shot on Video or Pictures, so the 24-70mm 2.8 does become a good Choice.

I am looking for the absolute sharpness I found in 35mm 1.8, and more.

If you can suggest anything besides that, that would be helpful.

On your full frame film F4, your 35/1.8 is useable, but will vignette. Faster lenses for FX are the 35/2 (cheaper/lighter) & 24/1.4 (faster/way more expensive).  Any wider than these, distortion comes into play. You really have to move closer to your subject anyway using any of these. The 14-24/2.8 cannot mount any protective filter.  The 17-35/2.8 AFS would be more practical. You can attach a protective filter for the rigors of street shooting. If you need to take closer shots you need a telephoto zoom so as not to crowd your subject.

If I had to choose, a one lens combo: either 24/1.4G or 35/2 will work for me. For 2 lens combo: 17-35/2.8 AFS & 70-200/2.8 VR2 would be enough. 3 lens combo: add the 50/1.4 AFS to the mix.

I'm speaking as a photographer. I'm not a videographer. If your interest lies in videography, why not use a dedicated videocam? It will be cheaper.

Lighter and faster would be better especially in video if you are not going to purchase a stabilizer.

If this is for thesis use, why not rent the lens? I seen people rent out a 14-24 and the 24-70.

Plano ko din kasi mag Invest for my own Photogs. Iniisip ko, Invest on something that is good for my Street Photogs but also will work with HD Vids.

I really dig Wide Angle shots eh. And right now I'm set to owning a Pro Lens for myself. I just want to kill 2 birds with 1 stone. Get the lens that can get me a different Angle, but will also work well as a HD Video lens.

Thats why set talaga ako for something Wide. Something different compared to the 85mm 1.8 which I consider a Telephoto on DX, and a 35mm 1.8 which I consider as Midrange. Pero naging wild card yung 24-70mm 2.8 kasi mahirap din gamitin yung 85mm minsan with video kung di steady kamay mo, even with Tripod. So ayun..

Ok... if you aren't too brand conscious then why not buy a Samyang 14mm 2.8? Around P20T+ or less and it is very wide. Check the videos at YouTube of those who used it and mastered the distortion it creates.

Pero honestly, ganda ng mga samples ng 24mm 1.4  :D

14-24mm sayang kung sa dx body lang, it's really made for full frame, mas mamamaximize sa full frame. kung dx mag tokina 11-16mm nalang.

+1 dito. i was about to say the same thing about the 14-24mm, pang FX talaga to. Toki 11-16 is the better option for wide angle video. but if want Nikkor glass, the UWA for DX is the Nikkor 12-24 f/4.  ;)

I think the Nikon 10-24mm DX might be a good choice to match with your D7000.

@rsh78ph: Nag research ako, tas meron daw focusing problem ang 24mm 1.4. Totoo po ba yun?

Nakita ko na din ang Samyang eh, also the Tokina pero..

@Binggy and theperson: Naisip ko kasi na kahit DX Lenses are stil subject to cropped frame, kaya naisipan ko talaga yung 14-24mm 2.8. Also kasi may Nikon F4 ako, i love dat film camera as much as my AE-1. And whatever lens i would get, I would still use on film. Un nga lang, i weighing all the options, cause I only get one shot at this.. money wise.

Film F4 camera (full frame FOV / compatible) + fast wide angle zoom lens + ultra sharp + video option for your D7000 =  Nikon 24-70mm f2.8. I would keep it simple.  ;)  This is a better option in my opinion that works great for film or full frame or DX cameras and performs great for video. It's what I use with my D7000 when using video.  The other options might be too limiting.  One shot one kill!

If you shoot low light... I honestly think your 35 f1.8 will do the job.  But if you have the dough... then mas ok yung 24 f1.4! it's an OMG lens :) I wouldn't purchase the 14-24 unless meron kang FX body sayang lng yung wide end you'd rather get na lng a toking 11-16 f2.8 if that's the case.   Kung gus2 nyo po versatility then 24-70 f2.8 is another killer lens.

Pero my pick is 24 f1.4 if money is not the issue.  There's something about those primes :P

---it has to be pointed out that... for you to maximally shoot video ( since its one of you prime considerations ) its a ultimate requirement to shoot @ 1.4 or faster lens. The main reason is you want the fastest lens to render fast FPS at the best ISO. True movie cameras tend to use old 1.4 1.2 0.95 even 0.7 lenses for this reason. ISO 800 of the d7000 is not that good for me at nighttime shoot ( specially at the shadows)

so for me 24 1.4 from your choices. better imagery, ultra fast. sharperst @ 2.8 than any of the other two. But for me, from the way you are actually confused with very wide choices, just stick with the 35mm, save yourself your well saved up money (until your very sure, imagine buying a 70k lens only to find out its not your style or it wont be a great video lens)

and maybe get a 50 1.4 or 1.2 ais (4k and 10k respectively) < you wouldn't really plan to do Thesis grade video with contrast detect AF right??>
