ShaShaSha photobook app
« on: July 11, 2013, 09:42:02 PM »
Just wanted to share this - it's an app in the iOS store, for iPads, and I think there is an Android version in the Google Play store as well.

It's basically an app where they sell "copies" of Japanese photography books, for 99cents.  These aren't digital releases of the books, they're basically just 'scans' or 'photocopies' of the real books; at best, they're like "bootleg" copies of the originals.

I'm not too familiar with Japanese photogs ; (AFAIK the only Japanese photo book I own is Jun Abe's 'Manila') - the app has some Moriyama books, and a couple of Araki books as well.  All the other names, I'm not really familiar with.  The first one I purchased was Moriyama's 'Transit' - and I think it's pretty good. It won't beat the real copy, but for 99 cents? Not a bad deal, IMO.

So, it might be worth checking out, if you're into Japanese photogs. Just do a search for shashasha in the appstore.

I'm surprised that there doesn't seem to be more photo book apps out right now, given the quality of retina displays.  The only notable photo "e-book/app" I can think of is Chris Anderson's 'Capitolio', which I thought was pretty good, though it's unfortunate that they chose not to let the images render in full-screen.

And while on the subject of photo 'apps' - you can also check out the 'WiderImage' app by Reuters, if you're into docu and photojourn stuff.  It's pretty good as well, and completely free.

Good to know that somebody else has Jun Abe's book!
