Have you ever wondered how professional photographers makes those wonderful beauty shots? its always a balance of composition and lighting.

We all know there are a lot of starting photographers who wish that they had the perfect setup. a perfect set up meaning the perfect light, light meter, camera, etc.

So what better way to have a good setup? find an alternative. Macro users use a ring flash. A ring flash is a circular photographic flash that fits around the lens, especially for use in macro photography.

I searched the net and found the RAY FLASH ADAPTOR, google'd it and found that it cost's around 300 US dollars, approx 13k pesos, too expensive for an adaptor. at this price i'd rather buy an Alien Bee ABR800 ring flash which is 399 dollars.

A few weeks after i saw this add in the photography forum pipho
http://www.pinoyphotography.org/forum/index.php?topic=36501.0 (http://www.pinoyphotography.org/forum/index.php?topic=36501.0)

dp.online link
http://digitalprinting.multiply.com/journal/item/57 (http://digitalprinting.multiply.com/journal/item/57)

the same principle as the RAY FLASH but only 1/3 of its price.
4500 pesos not bad, it cheaper than ABR800 and the RAY FLASH.

i dialed dp.online and ordered one. @ first glance you'd notice how plastic it looks.
i snapped it on my sb800 and the flash was snugged correctly

Title: Re: Ring Flash Macro Converter
Post by: herbiesamson on October 12, 2008, 01:07:04 AM
pwede ba ito gamitin sa 24-70 2.8 or 70-200 2.8?
Title: Re: Ring Flash Macro Converter
Post by: CarloNasol on October 12, 2008, 01:13:27 AM
yup, it fits a 24-70 lens. just dont use the hood.

sa 70-200 2.8 i doubt that the flash can reach the focal length.

Post by: F00man on October 12, 2008, 02:39:20 AM
It must be eating up some amount of light, isn't it?  I'm just wondering how many stops is needed to compensate when it is attached to speedlite. Seems a great product though and nice review, doc Carlo. :)

got my rf160  ;D.  im using d40x with 18-135 and 50mm. also one has to deactivated the auto focus light on the sb800/sb600 wlang silbi coz the ringflash will just block its path. so yung camera auto focus light will do its job. will do a test shoot 2morow

just a test shot (will shoot a better subject soon).

Setup: D80 + 18-50mm f/2.8 + SB800 with RF 155

@ 18mm f/8
    iso 400
flash on TTL (kaya medyo underexposed but I like the soft lighting)

RE light loss, I think you have to crank up your flash by 2-4 stops for you to get decent portrait headshots with your subject 1-2 yards away, even at f/2.8

I've tried it ... but the 150mm barrel is too long. I have used the lens with my ring flash converter on an off-cam sb800 though.
