Any chance you want to consider a second hand DSLR? Judging by your initial choices, a second hand 300D or even 350D is within reach ;D Just check the Classifieds

I'd agree. Entry level dslrs are getting more affordable nowadays. Beginner? I wouldn't worry about that. Dslrs are great tools to develop your skills in photography. So I suggest you skip the p&s stage and go get yourself a dslr. Start your investment (both in skills and gear) now ;)

with the 3 cameras you've mentioned, s3 IS is the best, no doubt.

6 mp, 12x optical zoom, image stabilizer, flip/rotating screen, manual controls, fwhat can you ask for? it's like a mini dslr...

however, i sold mine after using this cam for 1 month. It's not because i'm not contented to it, but the desire for more power and manipulation messed my head... so i joined the dslr world. bwahahahhaha

unfortunately, i sacrificed more than 5k pesos dahil na atat ako magkaroon ng camera. I learned it the hard way...

if you're serious with your hobby, i suggest that you go to dslr... konting dagdag na lang meron ka na canon 350d!!! mas pogi!!! heheheheh....

hope this helps...

Thanks all for the reply, actually budget is one of the factor thats why im only considering p&s camera. They said that Powershot S3 IS only cost around 18k to 19k in hidalgo which is very much affordable.

They also said that getting a DLSR requires big budget because of the lens. I might stick with Powershot S3 IS as most said that its better and if I enjoy photography and want it to be a serious hobby maybe then I should consider buying DLSR camera.

Am i making sense?  ;D

Just call Henry's today and said that s3IS is out of stock.. probably this is the right camera for me  ;D

i had my s3is for 7 months (just recently sold it).  i travel a lot and was really satisfied with the s3is.  it's wide enough for group shots, nice bokeh for portraits at 2.7 and great zoom.  have a couple of moon shots too.  idol danielg is a living proof of the capabilities of this camera.  ;)

if there is a limited budget, go with the s3is.  read the manual and utilize the full potential of the camera.  then shoot and shoot!

then soon, you'll outgrow it... and then get a dslr.  believe me...  been there... ;)

@edwink & ice_man

I already bought the canon S3 IS less than a month ago and so far I am satisfied with its performance although there are some things I didn't like with it, like the 2 second recharge time of the built in flash which makes it harder to shoot in events and its not that good in night photography because in ISO 400, you can already see the noise in the image.

But overall I like this camera.. posted here are the sample pics using Canon S3

I think it really depends on what you want to do.  Some people buy DSLRs, but they go around using only 1 lens, shooting on auto.  Some make full use of the manual options of their P&S.

In my case, although DSLRs have tempted me at one time or another, I am very happy and contented with a P&S, as long as it produces quality images and has full manual override.  I don't like carrying heavy gear around kasi.  Knowing myself, my camera would gather dust if it's big or heavy, esp. DSLRs.  And it's always better to have a P&S in hand when something worth taking pics of comes along, than having a DSLR at home.  Unlike you, however, I don't have any aspirations of becoming a pro, so simple lang kelangan ko. :)

No, I'm not saying you should go for a P&S.  All I'm saying is that you have to know what you want and how you want to use your camera, so you can make an intelligent decision on which one to buy.  Nobody can tell you what to do, only you'll know what you'll be happy with.

If you do go with the A-series, you're not willing be to consider the A630?  The A640 doesn't have much advantage over it, and the A630 is only $250+ in Amazon, not bad.

s3is. it's a very versatile cam. but if you think you need a jumpstart for photography as a hobby. why not jumpstart with an entry level dslr? you'll outgrow s3is in a month im sure. :) been there...

maybe a 2nd hand canon. or you might consider nikon d40.

i bought my s3is sa mall pa nga eh... thats ouch :) and now im selling it to upgrade.

question lang mga sir, pag may dslr ka na ba kakailanganin mo pa ng p&s? in my experience gamit ko kasi sa ofc eh 350d, then my friend bought a s3 and i was astounded by it's capabilities kaya i planned to trade my p&s and buy a prosumer s3is, which at that time out of stock naman sa hidalgo, kaya i opted to am ore powerful h5, after 3 months ay no regrets naman kaya lang parang i need something more powerful talaga and plan to get a dslr either a 400d or d40, my dilemna is whether to sell my h5 for me to buy a dslr agad, pero sakin naman parang sayang at least back-up camera pa rin yun at kumpleto na sya kahit di bilhan ng mga lenrte.

For a beginner, I would recommend an S3 IS.  A beginner seriously needs to carry his camera everywhere to further his learning experience and a dSLR is just too bulky to be lugging around everywhere, even the entry level ones.

In fact, if you still can't see carrying an S3 IS around, I would say go for the A630.  It's reasonably adjustable, you'll learn composition, technique, and the various effects of adjustments, and you really can carry it everywhere.  Hindi nakaw-tingin, small enough to be discreet, at madaling i-fit sa maliit na bag.  Di mo rin kailangan maging masyadong toxic sa cleaning, at medyo okay lang kung mabasa o manakaw o mabagsak.  Better to learn discretion and care from the demise of a P&S than to regret ever taking up the hobby because your 30D got stolen.

an s3is would suffice on a begginers hand. you can learn and produce great images with even a point and shoot camera or a prosumer.
Think out of the box.

It's more of an advantage for me.. If ever you run out of charged batteries, you can buy AA batteries anywhere which already happened to me  :)

Although 4 AA batteries is a bit heavy  ;D

Yup, that's why I bought a Canon A710IS, which only carries 2 AA batts at a time.  Unlike S3IS na 4 n AA, imagine changing all 4 batteries, and you have to be sure not to make a mistake in changing because of the polarity issue.
