What Benro ballhead would you suggest that I get for the Benro C-298 tripod? The camera that I shall be using with it is a Canon 30D with battery grip and a Canon 70-200 F2.8 L lens.
THANKS.

May I suggest that you go to Aperture and bring your gear with you.  And then try out various ballheads with the C-298 (they have it there, too) until you have determined what is compatible with your camera/lens and, as well as what works best with the kind of shoot that you do.  Their sales staff are quite nice and accommodating.

I just came back from Aperture Trading Corporation and finally bought the Benro C-298 tripod and KS-1 ballhead.Very good workmanship.I even feel that Benro tripods and ballheads are very comparable to that of Manfrotto's or even a bit better. They were also selling a Manfrotto 322RC2 ballhead which I have been eyeing for quite some time already but when I compared it with the Benro KS-1 side by side,I decided to go with the latter as it was so much easier to set up and at the same time, had better build quality. On a side note,I would like to commend the owner,Mr. Frank Tsai, who was very accomodating and helpful that he really spent a lot of his time just to demonstrate to me on how to use the Benro tripod and ballhead. It was really nice doing business with him.

Did you get the Benro monopad?  What head did you pair it with?

Yup I got their monopod... I didn't buy a head, You can already attach the camera to the monopod even without a head.

I guess Benro is better than Manfrotto..

This has not been my experience.  I started with Benro but am now firmly with Manfrotto.

In January this year, I was able to get from Island Photo a Manfrotto 055CXPRO3.  At that time, other than the manufacturer's website, there was no price info on this model from US online retailer.  But I went ahead and bought it anyway.  Then months later, I discovered that I bought it locally at 25% less than the US selling price (Amazon).

Continuing the story, a part of the center mount came off during a trip.  I asked my driver to have it checked with Island upon my return.  Within a little over 2 hours, the driver returned with the tripod.  Puzzled, I asked him whether the store was closed when he arrived in Makati as he came back with the tripod.  I had expected that he will need to leave the tripod with Island Photo for inspection and repair.  The driver quickly explained that upon seeing the tripod, Island Photo quickly removed the center mount and replaced it with a new one and immediately returned it to him.  So the tripod he brought back with him have been repaired ... at no charge!   ;D

Wow!  Now that is what I call excellent customer support.

Manfrotto and Island Photo ... great product, excellent support!

Hehehe. Eto na naman to.

Sakin lang....I chose Manfrotto for several reasons:

1. My MF190xprob has a quick and easy provision for lateral orientation. Center column can be quickly and easily swung from vertical to horizontal without any disassembly. I need that feature. :)

2. There was a mention about the service. Yeah, I frequent island photo for cleaning and repair. And I need that also cos I frequently shoot in salt water and mud (landscape) and I also use my tripod as "tungkod". Hehehe.

3. Availability of spare parts. You can buy the locks, rubber footing, etc. separately if you need them for maintenance. Kapag nasira ang isang component, you have the option to buy that component only. You can also replace adapters, quick release plates, kahit turnilyo and tools meron. hehehe.

4. Local Price. Although I have the impression that Manfrottos are more expensive than benros, island photo offers their Manfrotto products at prices lower. Laging mas mahal sa iba. Lalo na online.

5. The name. Manfrotto came from Italy, started in 1960. It's not just a tripod company, although it has the widest range of tripos, head and accessories for cam support (from small P&S to medium and LARGE format cameras), it also has the widest range of lighting supports for photog, motion picture, broadcast, etc. It's manufacturing meets industry standards (DIN 15560, TUV, CE and ISO). They have very high regard to safety, I just cannot enumarate them here. Better check their website.

6. They dont sell tripods (or cam support) only. As mentioned, they have all kinds of lighting supports din. Ask island photo for their product catalog....napakarami. Some components are interchangeable. Galeng...:)

7. Wider variety of tripods and heads (or lighting supports) to choose from. Depends on your style and needs, meron sila. I like their mag-fiber heads, geared heads, precision pan heads (for advanced panorama), multi row pan head (for cubic panorama), etc. Mas madali rin mag-shift to medium format cos they also offer cam supports for that (actually, hanggang large format).

8. With the advent of DSLR's with video capability, I like the fluid video heads of manfrotto. They are fully compatible with my plates, quick release sets, and tripods.

With all that said, let me say that I have no problem with Benro. It's a well-respected brand. To each his own, ika nga. I happen to like Manfrotto over Benro, but others may not agree. It's ok, for as long as I'm happy with my choice.

Cheers!

Maybe I'll check Manfrotto on Island Photo later...
