I mean the difference in layman's term. Medyo technical kasi yung description. Ang alam ko kasi yung isa hindi stand alone at kailangan ng PC. Which is easier and more convenient to use in your experience?

actually similar type of scanners had been available for quite some time na. marami na ring brands using the same technology. try searching the net for reviews on 5mp film scanner.

siguro for scanning old strips of film for online posting (facebook etc.) papasa na yung quality, pero the quality is far from pro-grade scanners.

I bought the FS-501B model a week ago. I chose this model over the stand alone one because I would not want to edit my scans on a small screen. I would rather use my computer monitor. It's less expensive and with a simpler model, there are less parts to break down. After using it for a week, here's a short review.

First the good news. After opening the box I was pleased with the quality and build of the product. Installing the included cdrom was trouble-free. The film holder is easy to use and is fed manually. Loading and unloading film is a breeze and scanning is fast. It usually takes me less than 15 minutes to scan a 36-exposure roll.

Now for the bad news. The film holder can't press curved negatives flat since there's no glass to sandwich the frame hence, some focusing problem here. Scan quality is a disappointment. 1800 dpi is not even close enough to capture the quality of film. Using 3600 dpi produces the same poor scan at a larger file size. Resolution is poor even for a 5mp scanner. The program's attempt at auto exposure and auto color is a joke. Scans usually come out over or under exposed. It is especially bad when it's under exposed with blacks becoming dark blue and other colors become florescent. Doing PP with Photoshop is impossible bec. of the messed up scan image. There is no way you could override auto exposure and auto color and manually adjust the scan. After 100 rolls of film scanned, it have yet to see a frame that has the correct color balance.

You definitely get what you pay for.  Save your money and get a branded flatbed scanner or a more expensive branded film scanner.

As I have been saying in the other CD-R King related threads: anything from that store, from gadgets to customer service, is *toink* and a waste of time and money.

A really bad scan from CD-R King FS-501B. Can anyone salvage this scan in PP?

dyan88,

Check your settings. It could just be your jpeg compression settings.

The price is good, but there are so many IFs to consider. It is not cut and dried. Here are he issues of a film scanner that needs to be tested:

  - Quality of the scan. That depends on the hardware and software wired in the thing.

  - Durability. Will this thing last for my entire baul of film? In my case, I'm talking of at least 1,000 shots, easy. I have so many rolls from the past that it will take me at least 6 months of weekend scanning to get this out. The thing better hold up because if it will fold in just 500 shots, then it's wasted money.

  - Speed of scan. Mind you, 3-5 min becomes long if you have a roll or 2 of film to process. Typically, it requires about 4-5 min to scan a strip, not counting if the software allows you to color correct and do exposure corrections. Add 1 min or 2 to that before the scan. Risk it with Auto (if he software has it), hoping it will guess right so, you will work less PP the image files.

  - Quality of the jpeg or image engine. A bad converter will not bring out the best file. The hardware may be good, but if the jpeg converter is bad, then that's it. If there is a TIFF(uncompressed), even that needs a good engine, though it will be less lossy and compromises of lost details or mushied image.

 - the use of digital ICE or some noise/dust removal software. Without this, our imperfect negatives will require lots of PP. If the process of digitizing is long enough, then the process of removing dust, hair, etc will add more time to PP, aside from color correction and exposure compensation of done in post. So, a 5min scan now requires 1-2 min more to clean it up per image. That's extra work. The reality of it all, old negatives and the way most shoot is really dark, grainy, and maybe the film has faded (purplish or bluish or yellowish), so a software that does that for you is just going to be a time saver!

I think to be able to scan and resurrect old films is reason enough (considering they're just lying useless in a baul, donchatink? Pero would love to hear reviews nga of performance, speed, etc just to be able to appreciate.  ;D
