It depends on what's important to you right now. Do you want blue skies? A circular polarizing filter would be helpful. How about balancing the light between your foreground and background? A graduated neutral density filter would then be the thing you need. But eventually, you'll end up buying a number of these filters to suit your requirements. :)

As for the filters, I buy mine from Filters Exchange (www.filters-exchange.com) since they deliver for free. Saves me the hassle of leaving home just to buy the stuff I need. :) HTH

great help. thank you very much sir happy shooting

Now my question would be. If let's say I only have (for now) a budget for two filters and one of them is a CPL, what should the other one be? Should it be an ND (of what stop) or a GND (of what stop)?

kung ako i'd go first with the gnd (.9 soft edge) then nd filters...nd8 muna then nd106 or higher.  pag inuna ko kasi gnd i'll be able to cut down light agad sa upper half ng frame, i'd rather be able to balance light muna para iwas silhouette.  it's usually a 3-stop or more difference between the background and the foreground.

Would having these two filters suffice? Would these be enough for me to enroll in a workshop or do I have to add at least one more to the line up of two filters before enrolling in a workshop?

Hope someone would be able to enlighten me, TIA

yes having a cpl and a gnd is enough. actually pwede ka naman humiram muna sa kanila, lehboy provides service filters for use of the students.  you can even buy filters and other gear during the workshops.

a cpl is a must for much more vibrant outdoor shots :)

I'll take note of this sir jon. I will have to acquire the filters one at a time considering that they are heavy on the wallet. I've set my eyes on the 100x square filter of Hi-Tech for my GND's, the Lee's prices are way over my wallets reach. But even though the Hi-Tech brand is already pricey enough..

that's good to hear. I've been planning to enroll in the workshop for almost a year, but then I had to invest first on an UWA and a sturdy tripod (which I have now), so I'm into filters acquisition this time.

By the way, is there any difference between a CL and a GBL workshop? Doesn't it just bring competition on the two knowing that all of you guys are friends? :)

i've heard about CPL's and ultrawide lenses aren't that good due to uneven polarizing. i'm about to buy a 10-22 as well and thought of picking up a CPL ASAP then some friends told me about that issue. so now once i get my 10-22, i'll get a cokin filter holder and gnd filters. :)

That is an interesting find, bibili sana ako ng cpl but now that you mention that...

Maybe it only applies to cheap cpl's? They say in GNDs, you get what you pay for... I wonder if that applies to CPLs

i have a hitech 0.9 se which i used before i got my lee, i asked gbl & cl people na din on their take sa cast.  their reco is going for lehboy's filters instead. if you could wait a little more and could try lee filters it's worth the extra cash. isang bilihan na lang.

we've been shooting along side each other for some time na din and i would say there is no competition, it just expands your options to shoot....in short kung may magyaya sama lang ng sama  :D  in terms of approach i can't really tell kasi i haven't joined CL workshops, i would suggest though that you take a closer look/study the differences in shooting style and choose which one you think you like better.  either way going CL or GBL won't really make much of a difference kasi they're both terrific workshops. it's how you understand and apply the learnings to your planning, timing and composition that will improve your landscape photos.  magiging weather forecaster ka na din after mo mag workshop  ;D

I don't think the TS wanted to know about his next lens purchase(s) but rather on what accessories to buy and/or whether he should invest in books since he was getting interested with landscape photography..

you mean to say you want to join a landscape workshop? tama ba?

AFAIK, okay lang na naka-kitlens ka - I think some of those who enrolled in the Chasing Lights workshop used an 18-55 lens, although di mo ma-maximize yung width ng scenery kasi iba pa din pag naka-UWA ka. Okay, sasabihin ng iba foot zoom lang ang katapat nyan - but what if wala ka nang ma-aatrasan or pag umatras ka me ibang clutter na mahahagip yung lens mo? Iba pa din syempre pag ultra-wide lens.

Also learned from Edwin Martinez himself na okay lang kahit wala kang filters dahil meron silang service filters sa workshop na pwede nilang ipahiram sa'yo. But what happens after? ;)

Hmm. The first time i used a UWA, my pictures were seriously bad. like really.
Because:
-I had a hard time composing.
-Wasnt used to a really wide lens, usually with my trusty 18mm before
-Never understood light, how to manipulate it and such
-Never read the histogram
-Hyperfocal never understood it

Landscaping is hard especially if you're starting. I advice shooting at rural places if landscapes, dont worry about the filters for now. just understand proper exposure, and read read read and apply. Pag may nabasa ka na interesting try it the next day. If you feel like you're improving then dive into filters. And so on..

Shoot RAW pala.
Play with light, and you'll eventually get it right

I think I should take these workshops. Indeed I may have been shooting for a good while now, but as someone mentioned on here, there is something that seems to be lacking. It doesn't have the same dynamism that I had intended or the shot I had in mind.
