To make the discussions a little interesting, what are those relatively cheap AFD lenses you are talking about that are worth dying for? Are those AFD lenses will not make you GAS for a more expensive AFS-Nano coated Nikkors? Are the AFD lenses really cheap like the 28 mm AFD?The 50 mm 1.8 is a dirt cheap of course but is it better and versatile like the 35 1.8 AFS DX? Will you get the 85 AFD 1.8 when there is the 85 3.5G Macro DX AFS?Those are just a few arguments. This is not OT since these are the lenses that we can use for the d3100 and d90.
This is does not include the AIS Nikkors in the discussions.

"Worth dying for?" Let's not be mocking or  OA please. It is just an opinion, not everyone has the same opinion as yours. we don't have to enumerate the non-motorized AF lenses (including other brands) that are out there. My opinion is that is is simply better to have the option to choose between motorized and non-motorized lenses without any impediment, a flexibility that the D90 offers. And what's that about GAS and the need to for the newer AFS lenses? Just because an AFS 85 1.4 comes out, that doesn't mean my AFD 85 1.4 suddenly became obsolete, even if it already adequately fills my needs.

hehe nice to see a canon user contributing to the discussion regarding the thread starter's conundrum here.  :D :D :D

regarding the lens debate, i think such a discussion would be much helpful if it is on another separate thread, seeing as how the TS is already confused on the direction his photography will be taking him onward in the future. perhaps lens suggestions for our thread starter would be much better, instead of debating the qualities of the older AF-D lenses versus the newer nano-coated lenses in this thread. he only asked for opinions regarding the 2 bodies, not on lenses on which to pair them with.  ;)

thanks to all who gave their opinion... actually medyo lalo akong nahihirapang magdecide.... (tnx TEMPER)...

anyway, all of your ideas are valid... kailangan lang talagang mag-sink-in sa akin yung mga info na binibigay nyo...

more opinions are still welcome... thanks again...

If you got a chance to use d90, you will never go back to D3100 bodies :) (except for having a 2nd/light body)

Something to think about :D

While there are AFS versions of popular and useful lenses which focus faster and have better features but come at a greater price, there will be people who don't have the budget, need or requirement for these top notch lenses. you may want them, but you don't need them or don't have the means to acquirement. take for example what most people will recommend/ get after their kit such as an 18-105mm. the 50mm 1.8 afd. for a lot of people, this combo suffices their needs without breaking the bank. what more can you ask for with a long focal length range for general use and a very good low light performer? want to focus more on portraiture? get the 85mm afd instead. there are also pretty good 80-200mm afd deals out there for telephoto action photography. the BIM gives you the options not to spend in the long run for "budget" lenses which you can't in non BIM cameras. It's about the options, not because you have hundreds of thousands of pesos to spend on cameras. if you had these funds, you prolly won't be buying these cameras.

now this would be different say you're just getting a camera to get a little bit better camera than your advanced point and shoot, dive into manual controls and probably won't be going beyond your kitlens or you're getting a 2nd body as a lighter alternative to your heavy bodies and have a collection of AFS lenses. in the end, it's all about options and back to the TS, at the same pricepoint I believe the d90 will give you more options if you'd want to continue the very expensive hobby of photography.

Well, same here...it is just really my opinion nothing more..If you think it is not worth discussing then let us just ignore it I have no issue if someone does find it that way!!! ::) ;D :D..literally nothing in the lenses whether it is new or not is really worth dying for. ;D :D ;) ::)
So it is clear now that the motor in the d90 is really important to most of us because it gives the flexibilty of using the motorized and non motorized lenses. The AFD have some siblings that are at par if not better than the new AFS in some aspects. That makes the d90 very attractive then to some of us!!! ;D :D ::)

Sometimes, I have feeling that Nikon does not want us to buy and use the old lenses even if those are good. I really wish the d40-d3100 has a BIM.
I hope the TS/OP has a clearer picture now and really sorry if we muddled up the discussions at times. I hope it will not confused you more.

if you have a budget para sa lense go for d3100..

if wala go for D90 the best pa din kahit hindi AFS ang lense may autofocus pa din :)

like me, I  have chosen  D90 to avoid wondering "bat di nalang D90 binili ko ".Next is full frame cameras na and too expensive for me. di ka magsisisi.Tipid ka pa sa Lenses and the kit lens that is included is a 18-105 w/c is more expensive than 18-55.

Wow, I have learned a lot in the past few days that I have "stalked" sites after sites for this same questions. The budget constraint on my part is the factor, although I could still wait and save a bit more but I have finally decided on getting the d3100.  I have read all the raves of the d90 and I must say it really is great but the thing is, I love taking pictures when time permits and my time is really limited.  Buying a d90 and not finding time to use it would be a waste.  The d3100 is not that expensive, i guess it will be good for getting my feet wet, if i do become addicted to it, I'll probably just save more and get the d90 successor.
I did not fight my way on top of the food chain to be a vegetarian.
