Sanyo announces 2500mAh XX eneloop batteries
« on: September 30, 2010, 02:18:04 AM »

Via Engadget.com:

Quote
Rechargeable batteries keep a lot of toxic goop out of the world's landfills, but ones that drain themselves whilst just sitting there in the drawer aren't exactly perfect themselves. Sanyo licked that problem with its eneloop cells, thanks to their low self-discharge rates, and now the company is doing even better: boosting capacity. Sanyo will soon ship the eneloop XX battery in AA size, a 2500mAh cell that offers 25 percent more oomph than its predecessors. Even more important? The black and silver logo that serves as "a further testament to Sanyo's design strength." These up-rated and macho-designed batteries start shipping in Europe in December and, while no price has yet been assigned, given the number of times Sanyo mentions "professional" in its press release (six) they probably won't be cheap.

Thanks for the info.

This is quite a breakthrough by Sanyo as low self-discharge (LSD) batteries were until just recently pegged to a 2000-2100mAh maximum capacity.  The added 400-500mAh capacity will come in very handy for some uses.

Note though that the life of this new higher-capacity eneloop is now pegged to 500 cycles.  This is down from the 1000 cycles with the standard eneloop.  Though lower, this is pretty good and can be useful when one needs higher-capacity batteries.

Note that there is a Version 2 of the standard eneloop (2000mAh).  Life cycle is now set at 1500 cycles (from 1000) and has been designed to retain its charge for an even longer period (75% in 3 years from the previous 1 year provided the storage conditions specified are maintained).

Sanyo deserves a well-earned praise for continuing to introduce innovative and improved products.

LGO, is there any way to distinguish the version 1 from the version 2 of the 2000mah eneloops? may difference ba sa packaging, etc.

AFAIK, 2nd gen eneloops have the model number HR-3UTGA while 1st gen models have  HR-3UTG as theirs.

The packaging I got shows "Up to 1500 times" on the upper left hand on the corner.

The lower part of the package says "Retain 75% of the capacity after 3 years of storage once fully charged*"

Version 2 cost about 10% more than Version 1 but is very useful for devices kept mainly in storage rather than used regularly, or in reverse, for items that are used very frequently.  I tried 2 sets of 4 Version 2 for the latter.

Jovy, i researched further into this and it seems that the 2nd gen has HR-3UTG instead of HR-3UTA. Found the packaging that LGO referenced too:

I'll take these over my 2700mAH Ansmanns. The 200mAH difference is negligible.

Based on the Sanyo website, official release is on December and this may not even reach our region yet.

My bad! i didn't notice that both models had HR-3UTG on them and the difference was the additional A for the 2nd gen. I haven't bought the 2nd gens yet but it's good to know!
