Don't forget to get a tripod. =) It will come in handy for portrait and group shot works.

cam, flash, extra batteries and most all a good sense of humor. english speaking is a plus. :)

aside from the D90 kit lens, a prime lens for portraits (maybe 35mm f/1.8). If you're starting with a  D40, you'll need to get a longer zoom for those candid shots.

Professional photographers, whether full-time or part-time clickers, whether in grand or small-scale events, when they are hired to cover an event, the client/s expect that you, as a photographer, have sufficient equipment on hand to cover that event and have backup gear just in case something goes wrong with your main shooting equipment.  So IMO, covering a small office party should be treated the same way as covering a prom or wedding.  They all expect the same results: great pictures and they want it fast.
