Usually clients are naive with what gear is top of the line now. Of course unless you're the vain type na dala dala yung mga pro bodies and lenses nila everywhere :P

this is sooo true...when we were looking for our wedding photographer.....i did not even bother talking nor looking at gear.... we wanted to see almost all their works (printed or on the monitor)... and very particular about the first few meetings since it defined the stage of comfortability and trust based on the work and rapport built in those initial meeting....... we even asked for some contact details of past clients and spent a few minutes on the phone just to do a background check...... OC noh?!

if the client looks at gear more than output.....do not be intimidated because we all know that photography is not about owning so much gear.......

@ Marcossius - thank  you so much for the enlightenment. your explanation regarding the "gear" thing somehow took a lot of weight in our hearts. hehe

regarding target market, we havent really researched on this one and never even thought that theres a target market for these types of shoots. for us kasi a wedding is for everyone be it you are rich or may kaya lang as long as we get to produce good results for every customer that we will encounter soon. will try to research on that target market thing too but maybe you can expound a little from your side sir. that would be very helpful.

albums, albums, albums.... are you referring to wedding albums? now thats what we dont have as of the moment. would it be suffice enough to show portrait pictures of models we shot during the days when we were still tinkering with our equipment? like quality images we have even though we were just practicing. coz thats what all we have as of the moment. we are still looking for our first client for prenup/wedding shoots.

in case we get to have our first prenup shoot, how much would be the fair rate considering we are newbies in this business? how much also for the rate on actual wedding event? what would be the best packages for these types of shoots?

i know there will be a lot of convincing on our part since we dont have wedding albums to show as portfolios. but hopefully we could start very soon. we are not in a hurry though but we are just sooo excited for our first "gig".

@ masyong - thanks for the heads up sir. portfolio indeed talks to the customers. im glad most of the guys here pointed out that "gear" discrimination isnt a thing in this world. but indeed those expensive gear does make us salivate more. hahahha

target market - are you targeting the masa market? (10k lang namamahalan na sila) middle income bracket (makakapag-ipon para sa occasion, kaya magbudget hanggang 30-40k para lang sa photo video) or upper middle (40k to 60k ang budget para sa photo video, expecting jason magbanua outputs for a little less dough) high income bracket (they dont care how much you charge, basta they like your style at tingin nila sulit yung bayad sa output). -- opinion ko lang ito. ako i have mostly dealed with masa hanggang middle class marhets pa lang. sila yung mahilig mang-haggle o tawad, gusto maraming freebies. sila ang budget concious people. at most of the time, they dont look much on style, basta affordable at maayos ang pics, ok na sa kanila.

hmm, in my experience, my clients are content na kung makita nila pics mo sa laptop or website.  hindi na sila naghahanap ng prints. but syempre if we're talking about making their pics in to albums, kelangan may maipakita ka na sample ng album. in short, they have to see your sample of final output first.

i suggest kung wala pa kayong experience, sumama muna kayo sa ibang nag-shoshoot na ng ganito, to make your portfolio. pwede rin kayo kumuha ng models na boy and girl to shoot na parang pre-nup. or ask friends na mag-bf gf to pose for you. to make pre nup-type shots.

for me, maghanap muna kayo ng first few gigs to beef up your portfolio, to learn, not to make money.

thank you very much for explaining sir alanebs regarding target market. now i see the point. siguro we would cater to the masa and middle income market muna. kasi im sure dun ang mas marami at dun din kami makapagbuo ng portfolio.

now thats what im also thinking. kuha ng mag gf/bf couples for prenup practice shots... at first kasi parang iba ung dating na gawa2 lang yung shoot at di tunay na prenup shoot talaga. pero siguro for practicality purposes ok din pala. thanks for the suggestion sir.

yes we'll try to find our first few gigs soon. ok na sa amin na makagawa lang ng portfolio and to learn more from this trade and not think of the pay. pero im also thinking of the consequences regarding pay. ive read a lot of photographers in this forum about those "cheap" photogs who handle prenup/wedding shoots. we dont want to end in this side too. baka kasi madamay reputation namin in case we charge low. what would be the acceptable charge in cases where we get to shoot prenup/wedding under the masa target market?

thanks again for your replies mga sirs.
